"Even Yasin does not know his real identity or where in Pakistan he comes from. He was sent to him by IM founder Riyaz Bhatkal," said an unnamed officer. However, the description by Yasin has also led agencies to believe that he may be a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) recruit from Pakistan's Punjab province where the terror outfit has its headquarters and does bulk of its recruitments and training. The NIA, meanwhile, released a fresh photograph and video clip of Waqas.

An unnamed Intelligence Bureau (IB) official said that Yasin and Riaz Bhatkal had close connections with Jam-I-Ayyathul Ansarul Muslimeen (JIAM) which is the Kerala module of Indian Mujahideen suspected to be operating in rural parts of Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasargod Districts, reported New Indian Express on September 12. “JIAM is a Kerala-based module of Indian Mujahideen which also has links with Lashkar-e-Toiba, supported by Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan. The Kerala-based terror module worked under Indian Mujahideen but later decided to operate under the name, JIAM. This module was behind the July 25, 2008 serial blasts in Bangalore. Abdul Sattar, a native of Kannur, made 15 timers, the explosives for which were provided by Riaz. JIAM has strong roots in Kannur, Ernakulam and Kasargod districts, even though the recruits are working for different outfits including political parties,” IB officials added.

Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) ‘operational chief’ in India, Yasin Bhatkal, who was arrested on August 28, 2013, during his interrogation revealed that he jointly prepared Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) over several months with Pakistani bomb-expert Waqas, Assadullah Akhtar alias Haddi and Tehsin Akhtar alias Monu since 2011, planning a series of bomb blasts across the country, reported The Times of India on September 16. On the interrogation report, Intelligence Agencies have recovered a whopping 90 IEDs from Zephyr Heights in Mangalore (Karnataka) and Abdullapur in Hyderabad among other hideouts, indicating that the terrorist organization was planning a series of bomb blasts across the country. An unnamed intelligence officer said, "Only the circuitry was not connected to the IEDs otherwise these bombs were ready to use." Several unattached timers, batteries, detonators and shrapnels have also been recovered from various hideouts. All the IEDs, prima facie filled with ammonium nitrate, have been sent to forensic laboratories for examination.

One person from Assam is now a key member of the terrorist outfit Laskar-e-Taiba (LeT) but there was no report of him visiting the State in recent years, The Assam Tribune September 16. It is also suspected that he may have encouraged others from the State to join the outfit. Highly placed Police sources stated that the LeT leader from Assam is known as Rakib and he hails from Rangiya area. He left Assam in 1992 to join the terrorist group and now he is known to be a key member of the outfit. However, his whereabouts are not known and according to reports available with the police and security agencies, he never operated in the State. But the possibility of Rakib getting in touch with youths from the State from outside to motivate them to join the outfit cannot be ruled out. Police also suspects that a number of boys from the State have joined terrorist outfits like LeT, Indian Mujahidin (IM) and Harkat ul Mujahedeen (HuM). “We have some inputs that a few boys from Assam joined outfits, like LeT, HUM and IM but it is a fact that they were never sent to Assam to launch operations. Normally, those outfits never engage youths to operate in their own States,” sources added. Sources revealed that there were reports of movements of IM members through Assam, but they have not been able to indulge in any major act of violence in the State.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has said Indian Mujahideen (IM) co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, who is in their custody, revealed he had met Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leaders in Nepal before the serial blasts that rocked Bodh Gaya in Gaya District of Bihar on July 7, 2013, reports Mumbai Mirror. Bhatkal had reportedly surveyed the area around the Mahabodhi temple a year before the blasts took place. The explosive devices used in the blasts resemble the bombs used by Maoists. Until Bhatkal's confession, the NIA had been probing the blasts, considering three possibilities - international infiltration, Maoist involvement and local communal issues. The NIA had even put 100 foreign students studying and doing research in several departments of Magadh University in Bihar on its radar. "During his interrogation, Bhatkal revealed that Pakistan's intelligence agency has been working on a multipronged strategy to spread terror in India. For this, they are trying to rope in the Naxals as well," said an NIA source.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is probing al Qaeda for carrying out serial blasts in Bodh Gaya after key Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Yasin Bhatkal, who was arrested on August 28, 2013, told interrogators that Ayman al-Zawahiri-led global terror outfit already has a group operating in India, reported The Times of India on September 24. “Yasin Bhatkal says an al Qaeda module is already active in India. According to Yasin, Naib Ameer or deputy chief of IM Riyaz Bhatkal was informed about the presence of the al Qaeda group in India by a senior associate of Ayman al-Zawahiri in Afghanistan in March this year. Riyaz along with his associate Mirza Shadab Beg had met Zawahiri associate to offer IM’s services for jehad in India,” said the counter terror official. Counter terror sources say al Qaeda had been planning revenge attacks for alleged atrocities on Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar for quite some time in many countries. Within a month of the Bodh Gaya serial blasts on July 7, 2013, a Buddhist temple was targeted in Indonesia, signalling a possible multinational operation in progress, which is a hallmark of al Qaeda.

IM operatives Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akhtar during their interrogation revealed that the attack by Maoists in Darbha area of Bastar District in Chhattisgarh, in May 25, 2013, in which 31 persons, including several top Congress leaders were killed, impressed the IM and it may try an assault on similar lines, reported Indian Express on September 29. Moreover, Yasin Bhatkal, during his interrogation said that the bombs used in German bakery blast on February 13, 2013, were assembled in Pune itself and even the timers and bags used for carrying them were procured locally, reports The Times of India, on September 29. However, Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chargesheet claims the bombs were assembled by Himayat Baig in his cyber cafe in Latur (Maharashtra) and that he travelled all the way to Mumbai's Musafirkhana market to buy timers and bags to carry them. ATS investigations have also claimed that the bombs were carried by Baig from Latur to Pune on the day of the blasts in a bus. Yasin, however, has told interrogators that it was he who procured explosives and assembled the bombs. He has said the explosives were procured with help from IM founder Riyaz Bhatkal while he bought bags and timers locally. He has said he assembled the bombs in Pune, stuffed them in bags and gave one to his associate Qateel Siddiqui to plant it at Dagdusheth Halwai temple. While Yasin was successful in executing the blasts at German Bakery, Siddiqui failed to plant it at the temple and fled to Mumbai with it. There, after dumping it in the sea, he went to Jhansi where he met Yasin again. Siddiqui was later killed in Pune's Yerwada jail.
