A US federal judge on August 5 denied bail to the son of a Florida imam arrested on charges of financing and supporting Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reports Daily Times. US prosecutors have charged Irfan Khan (37), along with his father and brother, who is also an imam at another Florida mosque, with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists. The three Pakistani-born US citizens were arrested in May 14 and are among six persons indicted on the charges that they conspired to transfer about USD 50,000 and provide other support for the TTP, which the US Government considers a terrorist organisation. In a ruling late August 5, Judge Adalberto Jordan denied bail for Khan, saying he represented a flight risk. The judge had already rejected bail requests by the other two men. Jordan said the evidence against Khan was “substantial” but not as strong as that against his father, Hafiz Muhammed Sher Ali Khan (76), who was an imam at the Miami Mosque at the time of his arrest. All three men have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

A family rivalry over property was behind the assassination of Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, who was shot dead on March 2, 2011, and the killing was not religiously motivated, a media report said on August 10 (today), reports Indian Express. Bhatti's murder in Islamabad was due to a property dispute between relatives and Police investigators have concluded the killing was not religiously motivated in their latest report despite the fact that the Punjab Chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed responsibility for the assassination. However, Bhatti's murderers have fled Pakistan and are currently believed to be in Dubai or Kuala Lumpur, according to an investigator.

America’s covert drone war on al Qaeda and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has killed up to 168 children in Pakistan over the last seven years, reported Dawn quoting an independent study released on August 11. The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism said its research showed there had been many more Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) attacks on alleged militant targets, leading to far more deaths than previously reported. It said 291 CIA drone strikes had taken place in Pakistan since 2004, and that under President Barack Obama there had been 236 strikes — one in every four days.

Unidentified militants shot dead three policemen and drove off with two prisoners who had been taken to a hospital for dental treatment in Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on August 12, reports Dawn. According to sources, four Policemen had taken the militants, Nadeem Abbas and Zakeem Shah, from the central prison to the Khyber College of Dentistry (KCD). When the Policemen were waiting on the University Road for a cab to take the prisoners back, they were attacked by unidentified militants who were on two motorbikes and a car. The militants killed three Policemen and drove away with their colleagues. The escaped militants are affiliated with an outfit operating in the Darra Adamkhel area and were considered ‘high profile’ by the law enforcing agencies. Official sources said that in the past the two militants, Nadeem Abbas and Zakeem Shah, were involved in several incidents of unrest inside the Peshawar Central Prison and were wielding a lot of influence among the prisoners as well as some officials who had served at the prison. Sources say that Nadeem Abbas is more influential as he was a close aide to Tariq Afridi, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘commander’ in Darra Adamkhel.

United States (US) officials on August 12 strongly rejected allegations of an independent study that a covert drone war in Pakistan has killed large numbers of civilians, saying the numbers are “way off the mark,” reports Dawn. US officials slammed the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism report’s finding that there had been many more Central Investigation Agency (CIA) attacks on alleged militant targets and far more civilian deaths than previously reported. The report said that bombing raids by unmanned aircraft, designed to target al Qaeda and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, had killed up to 168 children in Pakistan over the last seven years. “The numbers cited by this organisation are way off the mark,” said a senior US official, on condition of anonymity. “One of the loudest voices claiming all these civilian casualties is a Pakistani lawyer, Mirza Shahzad Akbar, who’s pushing a lawsuit to stop operations against some of the most dangerous terrorists on the planet,” the official said, adding, “there were concerns about the lawyer’s possible links with Pakistani intelligence, as Akbar had publicly named the CIA’s undercover station chief in the country.

At least 12 militants were killed in two bomb blasts in the remote Tirah valley of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on August 16, reported Dawn. Official sources in Jamrud area said that the blasts in Tharkho Kas and Tora Dara hit two vehicles carrying militants belonging to Tariq group of Darra Adamkhel affiliated to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Officials said the first blast in Tora Dara killed three militants and eight more militants were killed in the second blast in Thatkho Kas. Another militant belonging to Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) outfit passing through the area was also reportedly killed. Although no one claimed responsibility for the attacks, the area where the incidents took place is inhabited by the Kukikhel tribe, who have been resisting TTP’s presence in their area and only recently raised a lashkar (tribal militia) of local armed volunteers to force militants out of the area.

The miners, who had been abducted from Akhorwal area of Darra Adamkhel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 12, were released by their abductors after 67 days on August 17, reports Dawn. The release was made possible through a deal reached between the local ‘commander’ of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and mine owners. Officials said that 12 miners had reached their homes in Shangla District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while remaining four would be sent to their homes soon after their release. The tribesmen believed that the victims were abducted by TTP and taken to Khyber Agency (Federally Administered Tribal Areas).

The United States State Department annual report on August 18 said that al Qaeda in Pakistan has become weaker but remains capable of conducting transnational terror attacks, assisted by allied militant groups. In its annual report on global terrorism, the State Department pointed to increased resource-sharing between al Qaeda and Pakistan and Afghanistan-based militants, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Haqqani Network. The report covers 2010, before the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. It reports more than 11,500 terrorist attacks in 72 countries during 2010, resulting in more than 13,200 deaths. The number of attacks rose by almost 5 per cent from 2009, but deaths declined for a third consecutive year, dropping by 12 per cent from 2009.
