The arrested persons are Saran Dewan, a former front ranking leader in Gorkha National Liberation Front’ military wing, Gorkha volunteer cell, who had recently joined the Trinamool Congress and his associate, Arjun Tamang. Both were remanded to police custody. Earlier, six persons had been arrested in connection with the attack on Subash Ghising. Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, while addressing a press conference, said a breakthrough in the case was expected in a day or two.

The Police Commissioner of Mumbai said, on March 28, in operations conducted on March 19, March 23 and March 24, 2001, the city police have busted two fake currency rackets by arresting 10 persons, including a woman, aides of the Karachi-based underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. They have seized Rs 1.51 crore counterfeit notes from various parts of the metropolis, in this connection. All the 10 accused have been acting at the behest of a Dubai-based agent of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) who used them to distribute the currency in Mumbai and other cities, the Commissioner said. It may be recollected that the Mumbai police had busted a Rs 1.45 crore fake currency racket in July 2000.

Police recovered six kg of RDX, detonators and timers from one of the accused, a Sudanese national, who is believed to be working for bin Laden. Police sources said the two men were sent by bin Laden to blow up the US embassy. The Sudanes national, Abdel Raouf Hawash had been in Udaipur, Rajasthan for 10 years and had even prepared maps and plans and had familiarised himself with the area. He had also set up base in Delhi for this purpose. The terrorists had planned a car-bomb explosion at the embassy and were on the lookout for a suitable vehicle. His Indian accomplice has been identified as Shameem who hails from Bihar. Security forces and intelligence agencies have launched operations to try and identify any other bin Laden man in the country. Teams have already been dispatched to Udaipur and other cities where Hawash is believed to have set up bases.

During interrogation, the terrorists reportedly told the police that they were working for the HM Chief Syed Salahuddin and had come to Delhi to collect hawala money and pass it on to terrorist outfits in Jammu and Kashmir. According to official sources, a terrorist belonging to the Kamtapuri Liberation Organisation (KLO) and a Bodo terrorist were arrested in separate raids in Jalpaiguri district, on December 23. The district police chief, while speaking to the media in Siliguri, said the Bodo terrorist was arrested from near the Sankosh tea garden, in Kumargram. The terrorist had reportedly taken shelter in Bhutan since 1999 and had also been trained at a camp there. The KLO terrorist, the mastermind of the attack on a school in Dhupgui in August 2000, was arrested from the Kranti area.

These terrorists have reportedly been assigned for suicide attacks on VVIPs and important government installations. Security at all the important installation has been tightened. Meanwhile, following a directive from the Union Home Ministry, security at all 76 government installations will be handed over to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as a follow up to the December 13-Parliament attack. Official sources said deployment of the CISF would ensure a common command for guarding all government buildings.
