On January 12, five members of a gang were arrested along with fake Indian currency notes (FICN) worth INR 81,000 from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, reports Hindustan Times. The five accused identified as Salman alias Aftab, Md Mubbasir, Md Arbaaz, Shavez Khan, and Rahul Saroj were involved in production, sale and circulation of FICN. The gang revealed during questioning that they had FICN with face value of ₹60,000 in exchange of original currency notes worth ₹10,000. Reams of high-quality paper, ink printer, cutters and printed fake currencies were recovered from the five arrested.

A wanted person identified as Aladu alias Matahur allegedly involved in a case of smuggling fake Indian currency notes (FICN) from Bangladesh was arrested from Malda District in West Bengal, reports The Hindu on January 16. Earlier, National Investigation Agency (NIA) had filed a chargesheet in October 2019 against four accused persons, including Aladu, who was involved in the procurement of fake notes from his Bangladeshi accomplices and later on circulated the FICN in India through his contacts.

The Tamil Nadu Police have blown the lid off an international network of former members or sympathisers of the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) allegedly involved in raising funds for reviving the movement, reports The Hindu on January 27. Mary Francisco (51), a Sri Lankan national, who was detained by the immigration authorities in Chennai recently and handed over to the ‘Q’ Branch-CID of the State Police, revealed how the accused persons operating from European countries deployed operatives to draw huge money from dormant accounts using fake identities/documents. She was intercepted at the Chennai Airport as she was preparing to board a plane to Mumbai. The suspect was found to possess an Indian passport obtained with fake documents.

Juhu Unit and Thane Unit of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on the intervening nights of February 4-5, seized heroin worth INR 25.17 crore concealed in a shoe cavity during a search operation conducted in Palghar District of Maharashtra, reports India Today. Two accused, Alim Mohammad Akhtar and Chhota Md Nasir have been arrested. The accused are remanded in ATS custody till February 15. It was revealed in the initial investigation that a person from a neighbouring state was the supplier of the seized contraband. His modus operandi was to supply the drug in a secret chamber created in a new pair of shoes. The two arrested persons along with their third partner were operating from a rented apartment in Vasai. From there, the accused were further supplying the narcotics drugs to the traffickers in Mumbai. Further investigation in the case is underway.

On February 5, a 'wanted Bangladeshi terrorist' having affiliation with Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) of Chittagong, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (Jel) was arrested from Dunlop area in North 24 Pargana District of West Bengal, reports The First Post. The terrorist identified as Nur-Un Latif Nabi alias Maxon was residing in Bengal under false name of Tamal Chowdhury and had furnished fake documents for renting the house in Dunlop area under Baranagar Police Station limits. Several documents, one passport that is valid from 15 July, 2021 to 14 July, 2031, along with cash was recovered from the terrorist who has 17 cases filed against him, including few murders and thefts.

Police have seized three Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in a metallic case (2.5 kilograms each), a Pakistan-made pistol, 31 live cartridges and INR 130,000 in cash from them. Those arrested have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Parminder Singh (all residents of Vinjoke village of Zira in Ferozepur district of Punjab) and Bhupinder Singh of Bhatian village in Ludhiana in Punjab. Punjab, Director general of Police (DGP), VK Bhawra claimed that the State Police, acting on inputs from the central intelligence agencies, averted a possible terrorist attack by giving a hot chase of over 300 kilometres and getting four suspects arrested in Karnal. They were arrested by Haryana Police following inputs from Punjab Police, he added. Karnal, Superintendent of Police (SP), Ganga Ram Punia said the suspects were in touch with a Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terrorist, Harvinder Singh Rinda, who used to send locations through an app to them to deliver explosives and weapons. A Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) contract employee was arrested from an undisclosed location on June 18, after falling prey to a honey-trap laid by a woman Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) operative based in Pakistan, reports The New Indian Express. Dukka Mallikarjun Reddy, an MBA Graduate from Hyderabad, was arrested by a joint team of Police and Special Operation Group (SOG) for sharing confidential information, which could have compromised the national security. Police said Mallikarjun was working with a Bengaluru-based company in 2018 when he was assigned to a DRDL project on which he worked till January 2020. In March 2020, he received a friend request from another Facebook used named Natasha Rao. He accepted her request and she introduced herself as an employee of a UK-based defence journal engaged in publishing work. She told Mallikarjun that she had earlier lived in Bengaluru, India, and that her father was a retired Indian Air Force officer who had shifted to the UK. Further, she enquired about Mallikarjun’s profession, location, and nature of work. During their conversation, the accused shared some confidential information with Natasha, both of them stayed in touch till December 2021.

The two men, identified as Mohammad Riaz ‘Attari’ and Mohammad Ghouse, who suspectedly beheaded a tailor in Rajasthan’s Udaipur have links with Al-Sufa, a remote sleeper organisation of IS (Islamic State) through Pakistan based Dawat-e-Islam, India Today reports on June 30. The duo was arrested on June 28, from Bheem area of Rajsamand District in Rajasthan. Police said that the accused were part of a conspiracy to carry out serial blasts in Jaipur on March 30. One of the two accused, Mohammad Riaz ‘Attari’ was the head of Al-Sufa in Udaipur. He was also associated with IS terrorist Mujeeb, who was arrested from Tonk earlier. Riaz allegedly ran a hate campaign with the second accused in the murder case, Mohammad Ghouse, who is also his brother. According to Police, Ghouse had gone to Karachi, Pakistan via Jodhpur in 2014, along with 30 others, and took training at Dawat-e-Islami for 45 days. According to the additional SP of Patna Police Manish Kumar, the Police are looking for 12 more wanted suspects hiding in different residential colonies in Patna and surrounding areas. The suspects had come from Kerala and Hyderabad (Telangana), and are believed to be the activists of the banned Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and the Popular Front of India (PFI). According to the Police, they have seized bank accounts of the arrested persons and found INR 83,00,000 received from neighbouring Islamic countries for imparting martial arts training to the youths in India. Ali Asgar a resident of Siswaniya village, was the seventh accused arrested in connection with a probe into the activities of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) outfit, the official said on July 20. The official spokesperson said the case is related to the arrest of six active JMB members, including three illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, from Aishbagh, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, who were found involved in propagating the JMB’s plans or ideology and motivating youngsters to carry out jihad against India. The case was initially registered at a Bhopal Police Station on March 14, 2022 and re-registered by the NIA on April 5, 2022, NIA said. “Asgar is a highly-radicalised individual involved in propagating jihad by posting hate and incriminating materials online in various groups on social media platforms…He was a close associate of the accused arrested earlier and was found using encrypted applications to communicate secretly with other associates in India and Bangladesh," the NIA spokesperson said.

The arrest was made after National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials on July 26, searched the residence of Aasif and his associate Yasin, 33, in Manickampalayam. It led to the seizure of a laptop, mobile phone, sim cards, documents and a bank pass book. During the inquiry Asif confessed to his connection with IS. Yasin is still being held for questioning.

On September 19, Shivamogga rural Police registered a case against Shariq of Thirthahalli, Maaz Munir Ahmad of Mangaluru and Syed Yasin of Shivamogga under the unlawful activities (prevention act) 1967 for having links with banned terrorist organisations and plotting to carry out terrorist activities. Munir and Yasin have been produced before a court and they were remanded in Police custody till September 29. On December 1, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested terrorist, Harpreet Singh alias Happy Malaysia, resident of Miadi Kala Village in Ajnala Tehsil (revenue unit) of Amritsar District in Punjab from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, when he arrived from Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia, in NIA Case RC -01/22/NIA/DLI, reports NIA. The case pertains to the bomb blast that took place in the Ludhiana Court Building on December 23, 2021. One person died and six persons were injured in the explosion. Investigations revealed that Harpreet Singh, an associate of Lakhbir Singh Rode, Pakistan-based Chief of International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF), was one of the conspirators of Ludhiana Court Building blast, alongwith Rode. Acting on the directions of Rode, he coordinated the delivery of the custom-made Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which had been sent from Pakistan, to his India based associates, that was used in the Ludhiana Court Complex blast. The arrested accused was also involved and wanted in various cases, including smuggling of explosives, arms and narcotics. Earlier, the NIA had declared a reward of INR one million on Harpreet Singh.

They were arrested in connection with the car bomb blast in front of the Kottai Eswaran Temple in Coimbatore District in Tamil Nadu on October 23, 2022, in which the main accused, Jamesha Mubeen, who after swearing bayath (allegiance) to Islamic State was planning to carry out a suicide attack and cause extensive damage to the Temple Complex with the intention to strike terror in the community, was killed.

Four Popular Front of India (PFI) cadres were arrested by the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) at Kochi in Kerala on December 29, reports OnManorama. The arrested were identified as Mubarak, a native of Edavanakkad; Zulfi, a PFI worker; Sudhir and his brother Salim, both hailing from Karamana. The development comes following a state-wide raid that was conducted by the NIA in the houses of PFI's second-rung leaders to unveil terror funding and alleged anti-national activities by the outfit. The NIA stated the searches led to the recovery and seizure of sharp-edged weapons, incriminating material and digital devices, further reports Newsdeal. A maximum of 13 places were searched in Eranakulam, nine in Kannur, seven in Malappuram, six in Wayanad, four in Kozhikode, three each in Trivandrum, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, two each in Thrissur and Kottayam and one in Palakkad, an NIA spokesperson stated.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested a practicing Kerala High Court advocate and Popular Front of India (PFI) ‘Martial Arts and Hit Squad Trainer’, identified as Mohammed Mubarak AI, a resident of Ernakulam district in Kerala as 14th accused in a case linked to PFI on December 29, reports Lokmattimes. The accused was arrested following the searches conducted at 56 locations in Kerala. The NIA stated that it recovered an assortment of arms, concealed in a badminton racket bag from the house of Mohammed Mubarak AI during the search operation. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested a person, identified as Azharuddin, having links with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Al Qaeda India Sub-continent (AQIS) identified in Lucknow who is a resident of Saharanpur, on charges of waging Jihad (holy war) and radicalising youth by means of jihadi literature and videos on December 31, reports Times of India. The accused was associated with active elements of AQIS and JMB, namely Mudassir and Abu Talha, Ehsan and Mufakkir. They used to propagate jihadi ideology amongst the people and propagate to establish Sharia law in the country by connecting people with the ideology of AQIS and JMB. One mobile phone with two SIMs was also recovered from Azharuddin's possession during his arrest.
