According to The Hindu, police in Bangalore (now known as Bengaluru), capital of Karnataka, arrested Imran alias Bilal, a suspected terrorist hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, in the early hours of January 5. A bag containing an AK-47 assault rifle, 300 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition, four AK-47 magazines, five hand grenades, a satellite phone, mobile phones, SIM cards, a Bangalore city map and other documents was seized from him. Director-General of Police, K.R. Srinivasan, informed the media that the police, who were working in co-ordination with Central and State intelligence agencies and anti-terrorist cells, had information that a man carrying arms and ammunition was coming to Bangalore from Hospet in the Bellary district. They intercepted a private bus, in which Imran was traveling, at 5.15 a.m. at Goruguntepalya, an industrial area on the Tumkur Road. Imran had reportedly undergone arms training in Pakistan and was earlier arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. He had studied in a private polytechnic in Bangalore and had been living at Hospet for the last five years. Certain locations such as the airport and the Infosys and Wipro facilities were marked on the map seized from him, sources said.

The accused, Ateek Ahmed, is a proclaimed offender wanted in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, riots, Arms Act and Explosive Substances Act registered in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Alok Kumar, said the inter-State gangster, Ateek Ahmed, who carried a reward of INR two lakhs on his head, was arrested near Meera Road in East Mumbai on January 8.

Two suspected Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI) militants, Lutful Rahman and Mohammed Amin Wani, were reported to have been arrested on January 17 by the Delhi Police. Daily News & Analysis reported that both were arrested earlier this month. Rahman, a Bangladeshi national, was arrested in Adarsh Nagar locality of North-West Delhi, while Mohammed Amin, who hails from Jammu and Kashmir, was arrested in South Delhi's Nizamuddin area on January 4. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), Alok Kumar, disclosed: "We have recovered 1.6 kg of RDX, a detonator and a timer from Mohd Amin and INR 4. 5 lakh from Lutuful Rahman." Police suspect that they were planning to subvert the Republic Day celebrations on January 26.

Police have arrested eight suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eealm (LTTE) cadres from Tamil Nadu in southern India and seized more than two metric tons (2.2 US tons) of ball bearings that can be used for making mines, according to Associated Press. They had bought the bearings, manufactured in Mumbai, and were to planning to take them to Sri Lanka, according to D. Mukherjee, the Director-General of Tamil Nadu Police. Five of them were arrested on January 23-night in the capital Chennai, while three others were arrested on the same day from Tuticorin, a port town 450 kilometers south of Chennai, the official said.

A suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was arrested with 2.5 kilograms of RDX by the Special Cell of the Delhi police from near the Seelampur Metro station on January 25, reports The Hindu. The militant was to hand over the explosives to an LeT module that was to carry out blasts in New Delhi on Republic Day. A hunt has been launched for other militants. Joint Commissioner of Police Karnal Singh said that the arrest followed the information provided by members of a LeT module which was neutralized in March 2005. The arrested militant, Iftikhar Alam, a resident of Gaya in Bihar, revealed that the explosives were given to him in Patna by a LeT conduit who had brought it from Nepal. Iftikhar further revealed that he did two training stints in handling of arms and ammunition in terrorist camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). He also visited Bangladesh.

On February 1, the Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh Police claimed to have arrested an agent of the Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from Varanasi when he was passing certain sensitive information to a person on telephone, reports ANI. Several sensitive documents including a map of the Harish Chandra Atomic Research Centre in Allahabad, information about Indian army bases and infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, documents connected to India's planned purchase of T-90 tanks from Russia and Indian troop movements and counter-militancy operations in Punjab were recovered from him. Police claimed that the agent was involved in such activities since 2001. The accused Javed Akhtar is reported be a resident of Allahabad and two of his brothers are living in Lahore. M. S. Shukla, Inspector of Police, Cantonment Police Station, Varanasi said, "We have all his records. He was talking to someone in Pakistan again and again and giving information. He is an agent of ISI and there are no doubts regarding that."

Four suspected Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, including a Pakistani national, were arrested on February 4 following an encounter with the Delhi Police under the Ranjit Singh flyover near Connaught Place. The Hindu reports that police recovered three kilograms of RDX, four detonators, a timer, six hand grenades, .30 bore firearm, US $ 10,000 and INR 50,000 from them. The encounter followed a tip off available with the Special Cell of the Delhi Police that some JeM members were in the Capital to carry out a major operation and they would meet near the flyover. Joint Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Karnal Singh said the militants, identified themselves as Shahid Gafur from Sialkot in Pakistan and Bashir Ahmed, Fayaz Lone and Abdul Mazid from Jammu and Kashmir. The three Kashmiris disclosed that they arrived by the Malwa Express earlier in the day.

The ship was seized by the Coast Guard in the Palk Bay, 20 nautical miles from Point Calimere in south Tamil Nadu. Besides the suicide bomb vest and detonators, five hand grenades, an AK-56 rifle with 124 rounds of ammunition and eight drums of 55 litres of liquid chemical were also found in the ship. District Superintendent of Police Gyanendrasinh Malik said Aslam and Syed Ali were arrested on the basis of information supplied by another ISI agent, Adil Anjuman, who was arrested in Lucknow in December 2006. Director-General of Police (DGP) D. Mukherjee said that Raju, of Rameswaram, was arrested in Pudukottai on the basis of information gathered during the interrogation of a Sri Lankan, Rahul, alias Antony, taken into custody a day earlier. According to Police, C Muniandi, also a boat owner, was arrested on March 18 following interrogation of another suspect Kannan of Nagatchi village in the Ramanathapuram district. Kannan was arrested a couple of days ago. Muniandi's boat, which was allegedly hired by the militants to smuggle "contraband goods", was also seized. Kannan, in his reported confession, said he had used Muniandi's boat to transport goods received from different parts of Tamil Nadu. Both the accused also had links with Sri Lankan Tamils staying in Tiruchirappalli, Police said. According to Police, the smugglers had recently loaded aluminium bars and explosive materials from Naripaiyur, a remote village in Ramanathapuram district, and had transported them to Sri Lanka. With Muniandi's arrest, Police held 17 persons in connection with smuggling activities. They also suspect involvement of more Sri Lankan Tamils staying in different places in the State in the operations.

The police recovered two kilograms of RDX, three detonators, two hand-grenades, a timer and INR 25,000 in cash from them. The three were identified as Abu Kasim, a Pakistani national, and Shafaqat and Shabbir, residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Shafaqat and Shabbir reportedly said that they were recently directed by their handler to hand over the consignment of explosives to a Pakistani militant. The police suspect that the Kasim was part of a "core strike team" dispatched to carry out explosions in the Capital. "The terrorists are being interrogated to find out the task assigned to them. As of now, we do not know from where they arrived in the Capital and when," said Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar.

Raja Ayyappan, a member of the Tamizhar Pasarai outfit, who allegedly received training at an LTTE camp between 1990 and 1998, was arrested following a tip off, police said on May 23. Ayyappan went underground in 1990 after the unsuccessful attack attempt at Fort St George, which houses the state secretariat and the legislative assembly. A team of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh police arrested a meat shop owner from Jalna in central Maharashtra on suspicion that he had carried the RDX packed in containers that were blown up in the May 18 bomb blast in Hyderabad, reports Times of India. The arrested person, Shoaib Faqruddin Jagirdar, is also a muttawali (custodian) of a local dargah (shrine), is suspected to have played a key role in sending four youth along with RDX from Jalna to Hyderabad. Police sources said that Ali, a native of Pali in Rajasthan, had earlier delivered secret information of Indian security forces to the ISI and was also involved in recruiting people for the agency in New Delhi. Ali had visited Pakistan by Samjhauta Express in 2006 and during his stay in the Pakistani city of Hyderabad, made contacts with one ISI officer, Shoiab Hasan, who lured him to work for their agency in lieu of money. He was also given a week-long training about stealing information about the Indian Army and the Border Security Force, besides the method of writing messages in Roman script. Joint Commissioner of Police, Karnal Singh, said on May 31, that “We are conducting joint interrogation with intelligence officials and raids are being conducted at various places to nab Ali's other associates in Delhi and Rajasthan”.

A suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative held near the Bangladesh border in April was shown as arrested by police in Hyderabad in connection with the May 18 bomb blast in the city’s Mecca Masjid, reports Deccan Herald. Nayeem alias Sameer was earlier in the custody of Mumbai police and was brought here on a transit warrant. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Sameer was one of four suspected LeT cadres held by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the Bangladesh border in April while they were trying to sneak into West Bengal. Later, he was handed over to Mumbai Police for his alleged involvement in bomb attacks on local trains. During a narco-analysis test, Sameer reportedly told Mumbai Police that he had transported RDX to Hyderabad, officials sources said. This was the second arrest by the Special Investigation Cell of city police which is probing the bomb blast. Earlier on May 25, police arrested Shoaib Jagirdar, a close associate of Sameer, from Jalna in Maharashtra. He is now in judicial remand.

Identified as Mukhtar Ahmed Khan from Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, the militant was carrying about 1.5 kilograms of RDX, a timer and two detonators. Delhi Police sources said that Khan was scheduled to go to Pakistan by the Delhi-Lahore bus on June 13 to meet LeT commanders based in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Police further said that the explosives seized from him were meant to cause bomb blasts in Delhi at the behest of LeT commander Abu Alqama. Khan was supposed to hand over the explosives to another LeT operative in Delhi before taking the bus to Lahore. Khan revealed to the police that he initially worked for LeT for money but later gained the confidence of Abu Musab alias Tahir and Abu Hamza, the district commanders of LeT in Srinagar. Khan had visited Pakistan in January 2006 and attended the LeT camp at Muzaffarabad in PoK and received three month-training in the use of weapons and explosives.

Mohammed Abdul Sattar, a 27-year-old airconditioner mechanic, was picked up on June 15 from near Secunderabad railway station while moving under suspicious circumstances with a travelling bag. He reportedly confessed that he had received arms training in Pakistan in 2004 along with other ISI activists under the leadership of Shaheed, a key suspect in the Hyderabad blast. However, it was not clear if Sattar had any role in the blast. The police seized provocative literature and VCDs on jehadi activities from his possession. He was produced in a court which sent him to judicial remand for 15 days.

Special Cell officials of the Delhi Police said that the three young men, identified as Nayeem, Mohammad Muslim and Wasim, all residents of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, were carrying counterfeit currency notes worth INR 3.3 million. Two kilograms of RDX and INR 49 lakhs were recovered from him. Police sources said that the conduit was working for Pakistan-based LeT terrorist Mukhtar Ahmed. Hussain allegedly used to collect explosives and money through hawala channels and supply it to terrorists on Ahmed's directions. Times of India reports that first class compartments of trains at Mira-Bayandhar, Jogeshwari, Mahim, Santacruz, Khar, Matunga and Borivli stations on the Western Railway were targeted. Police sources said high grade explosive material was used in the blasts but the exact nature of the explosives was yet to be established. Mumbai police sources, however, indicated that RDX could have been used to carry out the blasts. Services on the Western Railway were suspended following the blasts which damaged overhead electrical lines and signalling system. The Hindu reports that the Government on July 12 (today) claimed to have got some "leads" on the blasts. Six persons, including two Pakistani nationals, were arrested in this connection and they revealed that the module had already smuggled in INR 2.4 million in fake currency through Mandvi and sent it to Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Pakistani nationals were identified as Abdul Gaffar Qasim Chiba and Abdul Khalif Tayyab Chauhan, both residents of Bhabhobhit area in Karachi. The Indians include Mumbai-based operative Sayyed Ahmed Ali and three other Mandvi-based fishermen, Abdullah Adam Dosani, Suleman Mohammad Chauhan and Ismail Yakub Chiba. The arrested man, 26-year-old Mohd Abdul Kareen Quadri, of Asmangadh in Malakpet, runs a watch repair shop near the TV Tower in Malakpet. Though police claimed Quadri was nabbed from a lodge at Secunderabad, unidentified sources told Times of India that Quadri was picked up from near a super bazaar near Malakpet a couple of days ago. Police sources said that Quadri had links with Bilal and was in touch with him on telephone since 2002. He was reportedly passing on information to Bilal about the functioning of terror modules in the city. Quadri was produced before a magistrate by the Gopalpuram police and was remanded in judicial custody and shifted to Cherlapally prison on July 16.

Indian express reports that Pakistani national Mohammed Salim Memon alias Salim Malai and two other local operatives- Sultan Ansari of Nagpada and Irfan Lakhani of Mumbra, were arrested from different parts of the Mumbai city. Preliminary investigations have revealed that Memon had been staying illegally in the Bhendi Bazaar area for more than 30 years. Memon was first arrested on May 8 by the ATS from Nagpada area while in possession of 30 fake credit cards which he was attempting to sell to unsuspecting people and had been released on bail later.

A 9mm pistol of Chinese make was recovered from him. During interrogation, he reportedly told the police that he was residing in a guesthouse at Majlis Park in Adarsh Nagar for the last three days. Police said they raided the guesthouse and recovered one AK 56 rifle, two magazines and four hand grenades, apart from some Indian currency. "The fake currency totalled Indian Rs 10.2 million ($252,000) in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations," Dhak Bahadur Karki, a senior security official at the Kathmandu airport told AFP, adding the bills were hidden in soap bar wrappers. "This is one of the biggest seizures of counterfeit currency that I know of," said Kathmandu police officer Upendra Kanta Aryal. "We believe that this is an organised network and we are investigating it," he added. Abdul Wahib, aged 40, who told police he was a businessman, was stopped on July 30 at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport upon arrival from Karachi. If convicted of counterfeiting, Wahib could be sentenced to five years in prison and fined the same amount as the total of the fake currency he attempted to smuggle into Nepal.

No terrorist group has so far claimed responsibility for the blasts. 32 persons were killed and 21 others injured when an explosion occurred at 7.50 pm at the popular Gokul Chat shop in Kothi locality, police said on August 26 (today). Five minutes earlier, 10 people, most of them from outside the State, were killed and 29 others injured in another blast in an open air auditorium in Lumbini Park near the State secretariat in the heart of the city when a laser show was underway, police sources added. The blast at the auditorium, where 500 people were present, was so powerful that some bodies were flung in the air. Among the dead at the Lumbini Park were two students from Ahmedabad and four railway employees. Hours after the twin blasts, the city police recovered a live bomb from Dilsukhnagar area and later defused it. The bomb was planted underneath a foot-over-bridge with a timer set for 9.30 pm, police sources said further. The near-simultaneous blasts at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat Shop were triggered by cell-phone timers, informed city Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh. Meanwhile, hours before the twin blasts city police had arrested four persons, including a Dubai national, and seized counterfeit currency of INR 2.36 crore from the old city, adds The Hindu.

Police are also investigating the connection of two Hyderabad-based operatives of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) with the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami. Police sources claimed that the agent, Mohammed Qamar Shafi Afghani, was passing vital information to Pakistan, reports Times of India. Afghani, a zari worker by profession, lived in the Govandi slums from where the ATS had earlier arrested Mohammed Ali, another person accused in the July 11, 2006 Mumbai explosions case. Police seized Afghani’s passport, a CD, ration card and five credit cards, which were reportedly gifted by an ISI agent called Tayyeb. Afghani had visited Pakistan twice - in 2006 and 2007. Joint Commissioner of Police, K. P. Raghuvanshi, said, "We had information that Afghani had been clicking photographs and passing information on some vital institutions in Mumbai. Sateeswaran, regarded as the kingpin in LTTE's procurement wing, was arrested when he was attempting to escape to Sri Lanka on November 26. The cadre from Kilinochchi in Sri Lanka had earlier tried to smuggle 50 bags of explosive substances, including Potassium Chlorate and Sulphur, which were seized at Paramakudi on November 18, police said. Police had earlier arrested four persons - Nakulan, Nethaji, Sekar and Subramani - in connection with the seizure. During interrogation, they reportedly informed police that Satheeswaran had bought the materials from them. A hand-book on making bombs, three cell phones and jewellery was recovered from him.

The three were allegedly involved in the purchase of a boat for the LTTE. Police detained three persons, two Sri Lankans identified as James alias Raja (45) of Mannar and Jayakumar alias Gaurishankar (34) of Jaffna, and an Indian national identified as Ravikumar (42) of Choolaimedu, on suspicion. During questioning it was found that Jayakumar was a Sea-Tiger and had illegally come to India in February 2007. He had allegedly smuggled out of the country computer spare parts, swimming pads and Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment for the LTTE by concealing them in beedi bundles. Police seized INR 4.78 lakh and 4,140 Sri Lankan rupees along with four mobile phones from the arrested persons. It is alleged that Ravikumar helped James in the purchase of essential items for the LTTE.
