According to Daily Excelsior, Army on March 20 foiled an infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara District, killing three militants while four Army personnel sustained injuries in the gun-battle which was still continuing. Police sources in capital Srinagar said the Army laid an ambush in Rangwar forest area following specific information about a group of 10 to 12 militants infiltrating into Kashmir valley from Pakistan occupied Kashmir. The troops established contact with the infiltrators in the wee hours of the day following which an encounter ensued. Thus far, three militants have been shot dead while at least two others are still engaging the Security Forces in the area which has a dense forest cover. "Six militants were neutralized during exchange of fire today. With this the total number of militants killed in the operation since Friday has risen to 17," Defence spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar said. He said a huge cache of arms and ammunition has been recovered from the area in which the operation was going on for the last over 108 hours. "The recoveries include 17 assault rifles, 13 AK magazines, 207 AK ammunition rounds, four Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL) and 21 UBGL grenades," he stated. One Kenwood radio set, a Thuraya satellite phone, two Global Positioning Systems (GPS), three map sheets, three matrix sheets, two have sacks and Rupees 9200 Indian currency have also been recovered from the area, he added. The operation was still in progress, the spokesman said adding there were no casualties among the SFs during the operation on March 24. As per the intercepts over the past 24 hours, the militants were asked by their handlers across the border to return to their base camps after the militants found it difficult to break the security cordon, official sources said. They said three of the six militants were killed close to the LoC while they were trying to cross back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir.

A plot by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) to target forward Army posts and other sensitive installations in border Districts has been averted by the troops who foiled an infiltration attempt by three fidayeen (suicide squad) militants from Sabjian in the Mandi sector of Poonch District in the night in which one infiltrator was killed while two others were forced to retrieve. The infiltrators, all top militants and members of LeT’s suicide squad, had been launched from Cobra 1 post of army in PoK. The intruders took positions at an isolated forest area and opened indiscriminate firing on the troops, who retaliated. The militants also lobbed grenades on the Army personnel. In approximately an hour long encounter close to the LoC, the Army personnel killed one of the infiltrators while two others retrieved to PoK taking cover of darkness. There were no casualties on Army side in the exchange of firing. According to sources, maps of Army posts in forward locations and other sensitive installations of Poonch have been recovered from the possession of the slain militant. Yet another infiltration attempt, backed by Pakistan troops, was made by a group of Pakistani militants from the Line of Control (LoC) at Sagra village in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district in the early hours of September 1. An Army trooper is reported to have died in the firing from across the LoC. "It was being ascertained as to whether the bullet was fired by Pakistan army or the militants trying to sneak-in. The bullet was fired from a sniper rifle which was available with top commanders of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen militants", official sources told the Daily Excelsior. The Indian Army is reported to have sought a flag meeting with Pakistan army commanders on the LoC to lodge a protest on both aspects – the cease-fire violation and infiltration attempt by the militants. According to sources, Pakistan army and Rangers have been using a new modus operandi on the LoC as well as the International Border (IB) to push militants. They first target forward Indian posts and then try to push the militants by diverting the attention of the Security Forces. However, the Pakistan army and Rangers have not succeeded in their plan so far, sources added.

The troops recovered of a huge quantity of arms and explosives, including four AK-47 rifles, three pistols, 17 hand grenades and 16 anti-mines, on the Line of Control (LoC). Official sources said preliminary investigations have revealed that the consignment of arms and explosives was appeared to have been smuggled from PoK by an advance party of the militant guides in the night and dumped in a small forest at Peeli Pona, very close to the LoC. "Definitely, something major has happened on the LoC. The consignment is too big that at least a group of four to six militants had either crossed or was planning to cross in this side of LoC from across", sources said, adding that troops were already on high alert on the LoC.

The Army has foiled a third infiltration bid by militants in the past four days along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara District in north Kashmir on November 17, killing one militant and arresting another. "Two militants tried to enter this side of Line of Control (LoC) in Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir late last night but were challenged by alert troops," Defence spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar told Daily Excelsior. He said the heavily-armed militants opened firing on the Army troops, leading to a exchange of gunfire between the two sides. "One militant was killed in the exchange of firing while another was caught alive, clearly establishing Pakistan's link to unrest in the State," he added. The arrested militant was identified as 23-year old Tanveer Ahmad alias Anas, a resident of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), who claimed to have received training in Muzaffarabad for four months. Two AK rifles, a large quantity of war like stores, including a GPS and a Thuraya Set, were recovered from the incident site. This is the third infiltration bid at the LoC since November 14. While five militants were shot dead while trying to sneak into the Indian side on November 14 at Kamalkote in the Uri sector of Baramulla District, one militant and two Army soldiers were killed in a failed infiltration bid in the Keran sector of Kupwara District on November 16. The operation in Keran sector was still in progress as, sources said, one militant was still believed to be hiding in the forests. Although a Defence spokesman said there were no fresh casualties in the operation, he added that at least four Army soldiers sustained minor injuries while combating the elusive militant.

A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Border Security Force (BSF), Om Prakash Tanwar, was killed and his driver and a body-guard were injured when their vehicle was blown up in a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED), planted by the militants after infiltration into Indian territory from the International Border (IB) and reportedly detonated with a remote control device, at Maluchak in Ramgarh sector of Samba District, Daily Excelsior reported. Reports indicated that the militants had returned after planting the IED after they set off from Pakistan’s Lehri Kalan launching pad in the midnight firing indiscriminately on the forward BSF post. This is for the first time after the outbreak of militancy more than two decades ago that a DIG rank BSF officer was killed on the IB. Official sources said the militants having repeatedly failed in infiltration into the Indian side from both the Line of Control (LoC) and IB were reported to have targeted the BSF by planting a powerful IED before returning to Pakistan from the forward area ahead of fencing. Security Forces (SFs) have recovered about eight bags of ‘Best Way Cements Ltd’, made in Pakistan, in which the militants had brought sand to the Indian side to hide the IED under it. The bags were left at the spot by the militants after planting the IED and burying it under the sand. Sources said the BSF troopers from their advance post of Ballarh in Ramgarh sector observed movement of six militants, each in two groups, at about 1.30 am. Even as the troopers sounded an alert along the IB, one of the groups of militants opened firing on the BSF in a bid to infiltrate into Indian territory. However, the BSF personnel retaliated and the exchange of firing continued for about an hour. While one group of militants engaged the BSF in firing, another group was reported to have sneaked into the Indian side along with a powerful IED and sand bags. They planted the IED at the road used by the BSF for surveillance of the border, covered it with sand brought from across and reportedly took shelter about 400 meters away anticipating that senior BSF officers would visit the spot in the morning to assess the situation after firing. Sources said the militants detonated the IED with a remote control device from a distance as soon as the DIG’s jeep touched the site of explosive device at about 8.55 am.

However, in the process, one trooper was also killed and two others injured. Official sources said cease-fire violation by the Pakistan Army at Tarkundi in Balakote sector of Mendhar tehsil (revenue unit) in Poonch District during which they fired heavily on Indian positions was aimed at pushing a group of five to seven militants into the Indian territory. Inspector General of Police (Jammu Zone) Ashok Gupta said that militants made three attempts to infiltrate into this side from the area falling between Dandot and Kanga Gali on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balakote sector since the night of November 20. A heavy exchange of firing continued for about an hour in which two infiltrators and one trooper were killed while two other soldiers were injured.Intercepts revealed that a group of five to seven militants of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit were launched from Dandot area of PoK (half of Dandot village falls in occupied Kashmir) in the night of November 20 by Pakistan Army, which fired on the Indian posts at Tarkundi, adjacent to Dandot, to give covering fire to the militants and engage troops in firing to divert their attention from intrusion. Army on December 17 foiled an infiltration bid by militants at Kamalkote in Uri sector near the Line of Control (LoC), killing one militant, reports Daily Excelsior. The other cadres of the group escaped back into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The militants had not crossed the barbed wire fencing erected along the Line of Control (LoC) but had entered the Indian Territory when the gun battle took place. A Defence spokesman said the operation was still in progress. As per intelligence reports, more than 2000 militants are waiting at various launch pads across the LoC, awaiting orders to infiltrate into the Valley and other parts of the State. Nearly 100 militants have been killed in dozens of infiltration bids along the LoC in 2009 after the top three militant outfits - Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) - lost several of their top ‘commanders’ in anti-militancy operations launched by the Security Forces.
