Army foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Tanghdar sector of Kupwara District on February 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that a group of 3-4 militants tried to infiltrate in the general area of Shiv post manned by 6 Garh Rif at around 4:30 a.m. However, alert Army troops challenged them and fired at them forcing them to flee back. Army immediately launched an operation in the area. A Defence spokesman said that an attempted infiltration bid by militants was successfully repulsed by alert Army troops in Tangdhar Sector in North Kashmir during the early hours on February 1.“A group of four terrorists attempted to infiltrate under the cover of darkness and thick jungles in the mountainous terrain in general area of Kalban in Tangdhar but were spotted by alert troops. They were engaged with heavy fire and terrorists were seen running away into the thick jungles towards the Line of Control”, said the spokesman. He added that search operations in the sector were launched. He said that the repeated attempts of infiltration in North Kashmir continue to be foiled by the alert and watchful Army units based on sound intelligence thus eliminating the nefarious designs of Pakistan troops to foment trouble in the Valley.

With no let up in tension on the Line of Control (LoC) in twin border Districts of Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir, Indian Army on February 15 gave free hand to its Field Commanders on the LoC to take any steps including ‘punitive fires’ and ‘pre-emptive actions’ to tackle infiltration attempts and other kind of misadventures by Pakistani troops and militants under the cover of ceasefire violations, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that Indian army was reported to have launched major fire assaults on the Pakistani troops along LoC especially the areas, where ‘unusual activity’ was observed to ensure that any attempt by Pakistan to push militants into the Indian side or indulge in ‘other kind of mischief’ was effectively thwarted. Indian Army has used its posts at Balnoi, Sarla, Mendhar, Laleali, Doda, Banwat, Kalal and Keran among others in Rajouri and Poonch Districts to launch coordinated fire assaults in which several Pakistani army posts have been destroyed. India has used Light Field Guns, heavy 120mm mortars and anti-tank guided missiles to target Pakistan posts where militants were reportedly given shelter for infiltration into the Indian territory. The massive action by India has forced Pakistan army to issue 35 red-alerts to its forces. Pakistan, according to sources, has now pressed panic buttons all along the LoC. “The Indian Army, with all its Commanding Officer along the LoC being given adequate freedom of action, is hammering and bleeding the Pakistan army to deny it any tactical advantage of moral ascendancy along the LoC,” sources said. Sources said the Indian Army has been inflicting heavy casualties on Pakistani troops while replying to Pakistani shelling along the LoC in the last few weeks. The Army sources claimed that a total of 20 Pakistani army personnel were killed this year while the number was 138 in 2017. If India lost 32 soldiers in ceasefire violations, infiltration and other incidents along the LoC in 2017 (another 30 laid down their lives in counter-terrorism operations in the hinterland), sources said nearly 130-140 Pakistani troopers were killed in the same year. The assessment is there are over 300 terrorists (the number could be even around 400) in and around launching pads along the LoC on Pakistan side looking for an opportunity to enter into the Indian territory. “In view of massive presence of militants along LoC, Indian troops are bracing up for “hot summer” both on LoC and hinterland and even possibility of tension defusing on the LoC also seems to be remote. “Full freedom has been given to commanders of Army posts along LoC in Jammu and Kashmir to effectively respond to any act of violence by Pakistani troops,” sources said.

An infiltrator, suspected to be a Pakistani militant, was killed while three Army soldiers were injured, in a major infiltration attempt on the Line of Control (LoC) at Khari Karmara in Poonch District on February 18 night, reports Daily Excelsior. However, the report added that the death toll of the infiltrators could go up as a couple of them were reportedly injured during the intrusion bid. Sources said that troops observed infiltration attempt by the militants under the cover of heavy mortar shelling and firing by Pakistani troops at Khari Karmara in Poonch sector in Poonch District on February 18 evening and opened firing. While retaliating Pakistani shelling, the troops engaged the militants, numbering between three to four, who were making desperate bid to sneak into this side. Heavy exchanges took place between the two sides for about an hour in which an infiltrator was killed while at least three Indian Army soldiers were injured. Intermittent exchange of firing continued till late in the night.Three Army soldiers injured in Pakistan shelling have been identified as Sepoy Abhishek Pise, Shiva Ji Bhosare and Ashish Singh. They were evacuated from the site of shelling and admitted to the Military Hospital. Sources said Pakistani troops and infiltrators simultaneously targeted forward Army posts as desperate militants, who were equipped with arms, ammunition and explosives, made determined attempt to sneak into this side. “The infiltration attempt was foiled,’’ sources said, adding that at least one of the infiltrators has been killed while the toll could rise to two. This was second major infiltration attempt during past four days in Poonch district. The first such bid took place in Mendhar, which was also thwarted by the alert troops. There were reports that a couple of militants had been killed in failed infiltration bid at Mendhar though their bodies were not recovered on this side.

Indian Army destroyed a Pakistani post on the Line of Control (LoC) in Balnoi sub sector of Poonch District while Indo-Pak troops traded heavy shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla District forcing the administration to shift dozens of families from near the LoC on February 22, reports Daily Excelsior. Sources said that Indian Army destroyed a Pakistani post opposite Balnoi sub sector in Poonch District after observing movement of suspected militants, who had been camping there with a view to infiltrate into the Indian territory. “The post was razed to ground,’’ sources said, adding that all Pakistani troopers inside the post were believed dead. However, so far, there was no official confirmation of Pakistani casualties. Normally a Pakistani post has three to four soldiers, they said.According to sources, the Indian action against Pakistani troops was necessitated as Pakistani troops could have aided infiltration attempt by the militants. Army has been maintaining high alert all along the LoC in twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri following presence of militants across the LoC and reports that they could attempt infiltration under the cover of ceasefire violations.Meanwhile, Army and Pakistani troops traded heavy shelling in Uri sector of Baramulla District on February 22 forcing the administration to shift dozens of families from near the LoC. A senior official said that Pakistani troops suffered heavy damage in the sector as Army fired rockets and mortars in response to Pakistani ceasefire violation. He, however, said that exact estimated loss is not known. Pakistani troops targeted Army posts at Hatlanga, Churanda and Tika Post along the LoC in Uri sector of Baramulla district early on February 22. “Pakistan troops started firing at around 8:00 am which was responded strongly by the soldiers manning the LoC in the sector”, the official said. The firing from both the sides continued throughout the day during which both the sides used rockets and mortars besides firing from heavy machine guns. The terror stricken residents in the shelling hit areas remained indoors to avoid casualties. Two houses suffered minor damage in the shelling at Churanda near the LoC. The intensity of the cross-border shelling was such that villagers living near the LoC were shifted to safety by the Police and local administration. An official said that around 25 families living in Tillawari, Silikote and Balkote comprising of 120 people were shifted from their areas. He said that around 80 people have been accommodated in Higher Secondary School Uri and over 35 people have shifted to their relatives places. In the meantime, Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force (BSF), Sonali Mishra, on February 22 said that troops are on high alert after inputs that 175 militants are waiting for infiltration in Pakistani Occupied Kashmir (PoK), adds Daily Excelsior. “We have a high level of alertness here but we have raised the alertness for infiltration, Border Action Team (BAT) action, firing, and sniping. We are always ready as nearly 175 militants are ready on the launching pads for infiltration. “, she said. Mishra said that all the agencies are alert and ready to counter any attack. She said that Pakistan always tries to disrupt the peace and prosperity of India and use different tactics including ceasefire violations, sniping and BAT action. “In order to disrupt the peace in the hinterland, they carry infiltration”, she said. “Ceasefire violation has always happened and we cannot deny the fact that Pakistan uses it as a strategy to carry infiltration”, the BSF IG said.

India on February 19 charged that Pakistan continued to indulge in nefarious designs of supporting and abetting infiltration by the militants along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir and has failed to respect ceasefire agreement and commitment on not allowing its soil or territory to be used for terrorism against India, reports Daily Excelsior. In a hard-hitting statement after thwarting Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) plot on February 18 night to target Indian troops in Khari Karmara area of Poonch sector in Poonch District, the Indian Army said it was clear that Pakistan had never been interested to bring about peace and tranquility in Jammu and Kashmir as they were responsible for vitiating atmosphere both along LoC and hinterland. “The statement by Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) at Munich conference in Germany that there were no terrorist safe havens in Pakistan, has proved to be hollow. Pakistan has been supporting terrorism in a systematic manner with complete support of their army,” an official statement released to the media in Srinagar on February 19 evening by the Defence spokesman, said. The statement was in reaction to February 18’s BAT attack by three militants at Khari Karmara on the LoC in Poonch District, which was successfully thwarted by the Indian troops by eliminating one of the BAT members-who happened to be a Pakistani terrorist-and recovery of huge quantity of arms, ammunition and explosives from their possession. Two BAT members fled back to Pakistan following effective retaliatory firing brought down by the Indian troops. The Defence spokesman said Pakistan’s continued support to infiltration from across the LoC was contrary to their stated position of making ‘Water tight arrangements along LoC to check terrorist movement’. Pakistan’s statement has been amply quashed by this (the BAT action) attempt on the LoC.Earlier, Pakistan army had resorted to ceasefire violations on the LoC in Khari Karmara by resorting to mortar shelling and firing with a view to give cover to the BAT members to cause action on the Indian side. However, alert troops had thwarted the attempt of the BAT, backed by the Pakistani troops. The Army statement said: “Pakistan has repeatedly failed to respect and fulfill its ceasefire agreement of 2003 and January 2004 commitment that it wouldn’t allow its soil or territory under its control to be used for terrorism against India. “It is clear that Pakistan had never been interested to bring about peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir. Rather, they have been vitiating the atmosphere along both Line of Control and hinterland”. The spokesman said the ‘White Knight Corps’ (16 Corps headquartered at Nagrota under whose jurisdiction the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch fall) was keeping strict and constant vigil across the LoC and all security forces are prepared to thwart any kind of nefarious designs by the Pakistan sponsored terrorists

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on December 18 said that the Indian Army has been targeting and destroying terrorist camps in Pakistan to reduce number of infiltration attempts and militants sneaking into this side and declared that Pakistan has been isolated globally for aiding and abetting terrorism, reports Daily Excelsior. “We are doing it. We are finishing them (the terrorist camps). Please don’t ask for proof. I won’t disclose where, but we have been targeting and destroying the terrorist camps (in Pakistan),’’ Sitharaman said. Reiterating that Pakistan continued to support terrorism and hasn’t taken any action on the dossiers given by India, the Defence Minister said the militants are still trying to infiltrate though their number has reduced.“W e are not leaving them. We are finishing them (the militants),’’ she said. Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement assumed significance as Indian Army has been retaliated to ceasefire violations from Pakistan very effectively. There were reports that the ceasefire violations were aimed at infiltrating militants into Jammu and Kashmir. “We are trying to decimate infiltration. We are in process of this. Army has been doing a lot on the borders,’’ the Defence Minister said. However, she refused to disclose the Government strategy on dealing with the situation in Kashmir.

The Central Government has decided to adopt a major strategy along the International Border (IB) in Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir to counter infiltration attempts by the militants, backed by Pakistani Rangers, and sniping attacks in which some Border Security Force (BSF) soldiers have been killed in the recent past, reports Daily Excelsior on December 26.Official sources said that after successful trial of Israel technology of Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS) at two places in the form of pilot projects on the IB, the Centre has decided to extend the CIBMS to more areas, which were vulnerable for infiltration, and gradually switch over to the new system of fencing.“The Central Government proposed to expand smart fencing in more areas along the International Border in Jammu to keep the infiltration of militants from Pakistan side well under control. The spots vulnerable to infiltration will be taken up for the smart fencing,” sources said, pointing out that the CIBMS has already been put in place at two places covering a total area of 5.5 kilometers on the IB. Jammu region has about 192 kilometers International Boundary from Kathua to Akhnoor covering three border Districts of Kathua, Samba and Jammu but during the past couple of months, no major infiltration attempt has been made by the militants, sources noted. However, the IB had been in the news in September this year (2018) when one of the associates of three militants killed in an encounter at Jhajjar Kotli on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) revealed that he had transported at least 20 militants to Kashmir after their infiltration from the border in Jammu sector. All three slain militants had infiltrated between Hiranagar and Samba sectors.According to sources, the Central Government, concerned over reports of infiltration attempts, wants to plug all major routes on the IB to stop intrusions by the militants from across the border.

Army foiled a major Border Action Team (BAT) strike at a forward post along the Line of Control (LoC) in Nowgam Sector in Kupwara District and killed two Pakistani soldiers on December 31, reports Daily Excelsior. A senior Army officer said that a group of Pakistani troops under the cover of thick forests and assisted by high caliber weapons firing, mortars and rockets, from Pakistani posts, attempted to carry out a major strike on an army post in Nowgam sector. He said that the Army deployed along the LoC detected the movement of the Pakistani BAT. He said that Army strongly retaliated and the exchange of fire continued the whole night. The officer said Army conducted prolonged search operations in thick forests in which two bodies of Pakistani troops were found and large cache of warlike stores were recovered. The officer said that the intruders were wearing combat dresses like Pakistani Regulars and were carrying stores with Pakistani markings. “Some intruders were also seen in BSF [Border Security Force] and old pattern IA [Indian Army] dresses as part of deception”, he said. The officer said that they had intruded well equipped with IEDs [Improvised Explosive Devices], incendiary materials, explosives, and a plethora of arms and ammunition. “From the recovery, it was estimated that they intended to carry out a gruesome attack on the Indian Army forward post in Nowgam sector. The alertness and resilience of the own troops, who engaged and neutralized the intruders, thus eliminated a likely treacherous attack on the Army forward posts along the Line of Control on the eve of New Year”, he said. The Defence spokesman said that “We will ask Pakistan to take back the mortal remains of deceased, who were likely Pakistani soldiers, since Pakistan did provide full covering fire support to these intruders”.
