According to The News, kidnappers freed more than 250 students and teachers unharmed after being given safe passage by the authorities on January 28 from a school in the Bannu district of NWFP where they were holding the hostages. Though the government insisted that the kidnappers were a gang of criminals, reports indicated that some of them were suspected militants. One of the kidnappers, Gul Jamil, who was killed in the shoot-out with police, was stated to be a militant belonging to the Karak district. Groups of militants have reportedly been active in recent months in both the Karak and Bannu districts. They have been blamed for some of the kidnappings in the two districts. About eight militants, who had abducted a senior health official, Dr Hussain Jan, and his driver in Karak, took the children and teachers hostage in the high school of Walizar Kallay in the Domel area of Bannu, Dawn reported. One of the kidnappers was killed during an exchange of fire with police. The militants released the kidnapped men and entered the school. They held the students and teachers at gunpoint to avert a police action. Sources said that local elders, including former legislators Qari Gul Azeem and Maulana Shah Abdul Aziz, held negotiations with the militants for the release of the students and teachers. The six-hour standoff ended when the elders persuaded police officers to avoid an armed action and provide safe passage to the gunmen. "They (hostage-takers) were armed with dynamite, hand-grenades, Kalashnikov rifles and other explosive material," Aziz told AFP. He added that "During negotiations they repeatedly warned they would kill the children and blow up themselves if they were not allowed safe passage."

Militants released Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Tariq Azizuddin, on May 16-night after holding him in captivity for 97 days, Dawn reported on May 18. His release came after protracted negotiations between the Government and militant leader Baitullah Mehsud, with tribal leaders acting as mediators. Azizuddin was reportedly handed over to the military authorities in Razmak in North Waziristan, from where he was flown to the Army’s brigade headquarters at Zari Noor for debriefing. Azizuddin had been abducted from the Khyber Agency on February 11 while on his way to Kabul. "He was not kept in Khyber for a single day. He was first shifted to Orakzai and after 15 to 20 days, taken to South Waziristan. The kidnappers drove him through Spinwam and Mirali, in North Waziristan," an unnamed official said. Azizuddin’s last stay before his release was reportedly in Shaktoi, a small town in the Mehsud-dominated part of South Waziristan. "The first couple of days were hard on him. But later his captors treated him well," the official added. The official claimed that Azizuddin’s captors released him as a goodwill gesture following the prisoners’ swap between the militants and the authorities and the military pullout from the Mehsud part of South Waziristan. "There has been no ransom paid and no special prisoner exchange in this case," he said. Some sources, however, claimed that the Government had not only paid $2.5 million for his release, but also agreed to release three associates of the detained Taliban commander Mansoor Dadullah.
