The body was found in the morning of January 7 by local residents. According to Police, Haren Baske, 40, was abducted by a group of people late in the night of January 6 and taken to the nearby Surirtari near Ranibandh under Barikul Police Station, where he was shot dead. Local residents said a group of 50 Maoists had barged into Baske’s house and taken him away with them, as he was a CPI-Marxist activist.

The Meghalaya Police on January 11 foiled an attempt by a group of seven persons, led by two surrendered National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) cadres, to abduct a trader for ransom in capital Shillong, reports Sentinel. According to Police sources, the abduction plan was hatched in Assam in the last week of December 2009. The Police managed to lure two members of the gang into the Polo Parking lot before arresting the duo. They were identified as Khwanta Daimary and Bipul Narzary, and both of them were surrendered NDFB cadres. On the basis of confessional statements given by the arrested duo, the Police raided a house at Pynthorumkhrah in Bangladesh Colony, resulting in the arrest of two others who were identified as Malthus Daimary and Bijoy Sujunary. One locally made weapon, six rounds of live ammunition and an NDFB extortion note were recovered from the house. Two other members of the gang, Nickson Khang and Gopal Roy, were later arrested from a motor workshop in Polo area. The Police also arrested one R.S. Sumero who was supposed to drive the car carrying the abducted trader. Meanwhile, two of the arrestees were suspected by the Meghalaya Police to be cadres belonging to anti-talk faction of the NDFB.

Superintendent of Police Vishal Garg said a large group of militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, raided the camp, taking the personnel by surprise. They opened fire indiscriminately, injuring four personnel. Then they snatched an AK-47 rifle and a self-loading rifle from the Policemen. “When the policemen retaliated, the group fled from the spot, but took away two constables with them,” he added. The bullet-riddled dead body of Constable Sanjay Ghosh was found in a forest near the camp, while the other Policeman, Ajay Pande, remained untraced. Garg said a massive search was under way.

Sources said Majumdar was abandoned by the abductors near the Assam-Meghalaya border. He, however, could not ascertain as to whether the assailants were from the Reang or from the Muslim community as they kept their faces covered with towels. He added that they decided to release him as the news of a search operation by the Army reached them. Two former officials of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and a free lance journalist have gone missing in suspicious circumstances from Kohat of North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on April 5, according to Dawn. Family sources of the missing ISI officials Colonel (retired) Imam and Squadron Leader (retired) Khalid Khawaja said that these officers were assisting the free lance journalist, Asad Qureshi, who was making a documentary on Taliban and al-Qaeda. They were on way back to their homes after having a meeting with the Taliban leadership in tribal areas when they were allegedly abducted by unidentified persons. The report adds that both the former ISI officers were having close relations with Taliban and Al-Qaeda leadership.

A note was found with Khalid Khawaja’s body saying “whoever spies for US will meet same fate” and warning that the others abducted persons would meet the same fate if the Government did not meet their demands. “Khalid Khawaja is no more... we had given a deadline for the acceptance of our demands. The ISI and the government didn’t take it seriously,” said a mail from the “Asian Tigers” – a group unheard of before that had claimed to be holding Khawaja, former ISI official Colonel Imam alias Sultan Amir Tarar and a British journalist of Pakistani origin, Asad Qureshi. “His body was dumped in Karam Kot. He received several bullets in the head and chest,” Political authorities in Miranshah said. Police arrested Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam - Sami-ul Haq (JUI-S) leader Shah Abdul Aziz in Bannu where he was involved in negotiations with abductors of the three men, local Police said. Both Khawaja and his fellow abducted colleague were known to have close links with the Taliban and other extremist groups. Colonel Imam was known to have worked with the US Central Intelligence Agency during the Afghan jihad against the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1990s. He had trained many freedom fighters and leaders, including the Afghan Taliban’s elusive chief, Mullah Omar. The group had reportedly made the monetary demand nearly a year back. After the abduction, the outfit has raised the ransom amount from INR five million to ten million. The group should take up the matter with the authorities of the department and not with the employees. We appeal to the group to release him unharmed and without any condition,” an employee said.

Tribesmen said beheaded body of a 70-year old Afghan national, Mohammad Wadeen, was found near Tableeghi Markaz in Miranshah, principal town of North Waziristan. Unknown armed men, suspected to be militants, had kidnapped him about four months ago. Tribal sources said that the slain Afghan national had taken an active part during the Afghan jihad against the Soviet Forces. He was living at a village near Chashma Pul, close to Miranshah. Another body recovered near Miranshah was riddled with bullets. Tribal sources said a few days back suspected militants stopped the Miranshah-Bannu bound mini-passenger coach and asked a local tribesman to disembark. The person belonged to Deegan village in the troubled Dattakhel tehsil (revenue unit) in North Waziristan. His abductors had shifted him to an unknown location for interrogation. His body was found on the Miranshah-Mir Ali road. A note left with the body accused him of facilitating a US drone attack in Dattakhel area was also found.

Two pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) activists were arrested in Paris on June 4 following the death of Ramesh Sivarupan who is believed to be a member of the Ruthrakumar faction of the LTTE, according to informed sources, reports Sunday Observer. The sources said that Ramesh Sivarupan was reportedly kidnapped and taken in a van from his residence in Paris and was found near his house after few days with injuries. He succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Paris on June 3. Thambiah Ganesh and Kuppilan Ravi, believed to be members of the Nediyavan group of the pro-LTTE faction have been taken into custody by the Police in Paris in connection with the death of Sivarupan, sources said. A week before, the Nediyavan faction set ablaze thousands of copies of Thainilam, a newspaper in Paris printed by its rival Ruthrakumar faction. The rivalry between the two factions had spread to several parts of Europe with the members of each faction looking for each other, the sources said. According to sources, the conflict between the two factions sparked off following the annihilation of the LTTE in Sri Lanka in 2009. The two factions are demanding that the assets held by the LTTE abroad should be shared, apart from their new ideologies, informed sources said. V. Ruthrakumar, a lawyer by profession domiciled in the United States is the ‘architect’ behind the setting up of the so-called ‘Transitional Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE)’ of his faction.

Babita (38), the arrested militants were Takhelambam Gobind alias Atomba alias Chumtham (21), Meisnam Obichand alias Boy (24) and Elangbam Chiam alias Prem (19). A 9-mm pistol along with 6 live ammunitions was recovered from Chumtham’s possession, and a 9-mm pistol along with 4 live ammunitions was recovered from Prem. The abduction was carried out in connection with monetary demand imposed on Pari Imom Khwai Sandangsun School Pangei. Some miscreants imposed monetary demand identifying themselves as Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) cadres. The ransom could not be paid due to some problems. Hindu reports that a group of 10 to 12 suspected cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) abducted a woman, identified as Neelmani Tudu, from her residence at Kundagari village in the Gopiballavpur region of West Midnapore District and then killed her late on July 14, suspecting her to be a Police informer. Her body was recovered from Dhanshole — about six kilometers from her village next morning. She was a local leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and former panchayat (village level local self Government institution) member.

The beheaded bodies of two militants were found in Zor Killay and Bostikhel area in the Darra Adamkhel region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on July 14, according to The News. The sources said that militants belonging to the Darra Adamkhel chapter of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) abducted Dost Muhammad, Umar Khan and Jannat Gul from Shiraki village some four days ago on July 11. The militants later beheaded Dost Muhammad and Umar Khan, who were brothers, and dumped their bodies in Zor Killay and Bostikhel area in Darra Adamkhel. The slain persons belonged to Momin fraction of TTP. The third abducted person was still untraceable and might be in the custody of the militants, sources added.

The aid workers and their driver were abducted on February 18 in Qila Saifullah District, about 200 kilometres northwest of Quetta. The driver was killed in the month of June, prompting Mercy Corps to close offices in Balochistan and neighbouring Sindh. "It is confirmed that three Mercy Corps workers have been released by the abductors in the wake of negotiations by tribal elders," provincial Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said.
