East Singhbhum Police launched a massive combing operation at Ghurabandha in Ghatshila on January 17 following intelligence inputs on infiltration of armed Maoists from West Bengal, reports The Telegraph. According to intelligence sources, an armed squad of Maoists from West Midnapore District in West Bengal had taken shelter at Kudian and Hariyan pahads, in Ghurabandha. During the combing operation at the hillocks in Ghurabandha, Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troopers rounded up a suspected Maoist from Gian village. The Police refused to disclose the name of the villager. A senior officer said the armed Maoists, reportedly hiding in the hilly terrain, might have given Police the slip and sneaked into Odisha while the combing operation was on. Five companies of CRPF, besides two of JAP, took part in the operation that began at around 6am and lasted for over 12 hours. East Singhbhum Senior Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Kumar Jha said that though the intelligence network had recently alerted the forces on the movement of Maoist ‘area commander’ (Ghurabandha) Kanhu Singh Munda and his assistant Puttu Singh Munda, information on the fresh infiltration of the rebels prompted them to launch the operation.

Nagaland Post reports that with six hostages abducted by militants in Mizoram untraced for a week, border fencing along the India-Bangladesh border has been stopped, officials said on April 2. “The Mizoram Armed Police, BSF (Border Security Force) and Police are continuing their combing operation to locate the captives,” a Mizoram home department official told reporters in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. He said the BSF had sought help from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) fearing the hostages may have been taken across the border by the abductors. A manager and five supervisors of a Guwahati-based company were abducted by heavily-armed militants on March 26 from their work shed at Bunghmum in Lunglei District in southwestern Mizoram, 200 kilometers south of Aizawl. Following the finding of suspected training centres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in Karnataka in March 2012, the Tamil Nadu Police, including Special Task Force (STF), Q branch and District Police, have launched a combing operation in the Western Ghats, reports The Deccan Chronicle. Police teams from 12 Districts are involved in the combing operation in the hilly terrain. “There is no specific information about the presence of Maoist training centres in the forest areas. But we don’t want to take any chance,” a senior Police Officer said. The State Police had busted a Maoist training camp in Theni hills in July 2007 after the locals alerted them about the presence of the camp. The State Police are now conducting the combing operation after the Police found a suspected training camp in Dharamsalai and Chickmagalur. “Some pro-Tamil handbills were seized from the spot. So, it triggered suspicion that such groups could be working in Tamil Nadu,” Police sources said.

Following inputs from the three arrested National Liberation Front of Tripura-Biswamohan faction (NLFT-BM) militants, Tripura Police conducted searches in 10 locations across the State in the past 24 hours, reports Times of India. Sources said during a search in the houses of arrested militants, who have been provided Government accommodation under rehabilitation package following their surrender in 2004, Police in Agartala had seized some incriminating documents belonging to the outfit. The seizure also included a letter addressed to NLFT-BM ‘Chairman’ Biswamohan Debbarma in Kokborok dialect. The news report states that NLFT-BM has recently recruited some 70 freshers in the outfit, who are now undergoing arms training in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In addition, Biswamohan keeps shifting his base between Bangladesh and sometimes in Aizwal (Mizoram) and the surrendered people were actively associated with NLFT-BM network, taking advantage of the rehabilitation package. According to the report, NLFT-BM has been suffering from shortage of funds for the past one year and they could not even pay arms rent to Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K). As a result, the NLFT-BM wanted some money to procure arms and repay the rent. SFs had arrested three former NLFT-BM militants and collaborators, Dhanu Koloi, Bishu Koloi and Ratasree Koloi on June 17.
