Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a group of Maoists exchanged fire in Biriguda forest under Boipariguda Police Station limits in Koraput District on January 1, reports The New Indian Express. BSF officials said based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of Maoists in the forest, an operation was launched and Maoists were spotted. The exchange of fire continued for one hour. However, the Maoists managed to escape into deep forest and during search of the area; Police recovered two INSAS rifles and explosives. Police also claimed that two Maoists were injured in the exchange of fire.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was shot dead in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) at Pathakchak village under Sikandara Police Station in Jamui District of Bihar on January 5, reports The Times of India. Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Rana said that the SFs comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the District Police shot dead the Maoist during an encounter, who was yet to be identified. The SFs had launched a search operation in the village after being tipped off about gathering of the Maoists who fired on the forces prompting retaliation by the men in uniform. The remaining Maoists managed to flee in the deep forest, Rana said, adding several weapons were seized from the spot. The body has been brought to the District headquarters for autopsy.

Sources said that acting on information about the presence of a group of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants, Army’s 27 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police cordoned off the area. A CPI-Maoist cadre was killed during an exchange of fire between the Maoists and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel in Ralegada panchayat (local self government institution) area under Paparmetla Police Station, a cut off area of Balimela reservoir bordering Andhra Pradesh, in Malkangiri District on January 11, reports The Hindu. The body of the Maoist was recovered during the search operation at the spot of encounter on January 12. His identity is yet to be confirmed. The security personnel also recovered two guns, articles of day-to-day use from the spot. Details were awaited as the BSF personnel involved in the operation had not returned back.

A ‘divisional commander’ of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was among three foreign militants killed in an encounter with Security Forces (SFs) in Dooru village in the foothills of Cherhar forests in the Sopore area of Baramulla District on January 13, reports Daily Excelsior. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir range, Abdul Gani Mir said that today Police received information about the presence of these militants in Dooru village of Sopore and they along with Army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) launched an operation against the militant group. During the searches of the encounter site three matrix sheets, three AK-47 rifles, three pouchs, seven magazine, four grenades, 120 rounds of AK ammunition, one wireless set and dry fruit and chocolates were recovered.

The abducted persons were released on January 27 evening. Three Panchayat-level workers and a Prime Minister Rural Development Fellow (PMRDF) were earlier taken hostage by Maoists on January 25 in Giridih District. OMP is a breakaway faction of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist). According to Police sources, Sabyasachi is not able to lure any new members into the OMP. Therefore, he is trying to mobilise cadre from other parts of the State such as Keonjhar. As per the details given by Ganjam Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashis Kumar Singh on February 16 regarding the successful operation on February 15, both the arrested OMP cadre were from Harichandanpur Police Station area of Keonjhar District and in their early 20s. The arrested persons were Bhupati Mahanta (22) from Tangarapada village and Govinda Moharana (24) of Tambahara village. On February 15, Security Forces exchanged fire with OMP cadres in Merikote reserve forest during a combing operation. According to Police, some of the items seized from the camp show that Sabyasachi was also present during the joint operation of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) and the Special Operation Group (SOG) on Saturday [February 15],” said the SP. Based on intelligence inputs that around 20-25 Maoists of Dallirajhra ‘area committee’, Pallemadi and Mangaltarai ‘local operation squads’ (LOS) were camping in Bodra Hills, Police personnel were mobilised in the region. Sensing the presence of security personnel near restive hills, the Maoists opened indiscriminate firing on them following which Security Forces (SFs) retaliated. After the ensuing gunfight that lasted for around an hour, Maoists fled to the core forest taking advantage of the darkness. Later a search operation was launched in the region during which one 315 bore rifle, live cartridges of 315 bore rifle, two INSAS rifle magazine, a wireless set, a solar plate, radio and batteries, six big and six small bags, Maoist uniform, school dress, medicines, commodities of daily use, Maoist literature and other Maoist-related things were recovered from the spot.

On receiving intelligence inputs about presence of Maoists in the hills of Baddongri near Ghotiyakanhar village a combined team of District Police, Special Task Force (STF) and Indo Tibetan Boarder Police (ITBP) personnel had started on an anti-Maoist operation from Aundhi Police Station on May 14. During the searching of area, Police had a face-off with the Maoists who opened indiscriminate fire on the Police party. Later on, during the searching of area, body of a Maoist was found who was identified as Pankaj ‘commander’ of Pendri Dalam (squad) of Maharashtra. An injured Maoist identified as one Pratap was also arrested from the spot, Police said. Those had been stored in a bunker. RAB also found oil used for cleaning firearms and discovered two more empty bunkers, as it resumed a search operation deep into the reserve forest in the morning for the seventh consecutive day. RAB first laid its hands on 184 anti-tank rocket shells (40mm) and 153 rocket charges on June 3 inside a bunker at a hillock of the forest. Six more bunkers were found on that day but they were empty. The next day (June 4) law enforcers found two more bunkers piled with a cache of arms and ammunition. Earlier, RAB Media Wing Director Habibur Rahman said the arms and ammunition recovered in the forest were apparently similar to those recovered in Chittagong in 2004 and Bogra in 2003.

The raids were conducted on the basis of the information provided by Akhtar Ansari, elder brother of Imtiaz Ansari, who was arrested after the blast at Patna railway station on October 27, 2013. He (Akhtar) was detained immediately after NIA recovered materials used to make explosives. Fortunately, the officials escaped unhurt. A law-enforcement official said that a vehicle of the 21-Brigade Dir was on Barawal Road when an IED planted nearby exploded. He added the officials onboard remained unhurt, but the vehicle was damaged. Following the blast, a search operation was launched in the area and 12 suspects were arrested.

At least 12 militants, wearing suicide vests and armed with rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and automatic weapons were killed and 11 Security Forces (SFs) were injured in an 11-hour gun battle near Khalid Aviation Airbase and Samungli Airbase in Quetta on August 14, reports The Express Tribune. Earlier it was reported that six militants were killed. The SFs also detained five suspects in a search operation conducted in connection with the attack targeting the Samungli airbase. Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Ghalib Mehsud faction claimed responsibility for the attack on the Airbases in Quetta. Ghalib Mehsud is the leader of Fidayeen-e-Islam which is the suicide wing of TTP. Commander Southern Command, Lieutenant General Nasir Khan Janjua said, "They all seemed to be foreign nationals." Superintendent of Police (SP) Imran Qureshi Police said, "All dead terrorists seem to be Uzbeks.” The Balochistan Government has decided to conduct DNA tests of all 12 terrorists killed TTP spokesperson Azam Tariq said that the attack was in retaliation for Operation Zarb-e-Azb in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The joint operation will include a manhunt in Midnapore and Purulia Districts of West Bengal and Chakulia, Ghorabandha, Shyamsunderpur and Dhalbhumgarh Police Station areas in Jharkhand.
