Assam Timeline - Year 1992

January 1

54 ULFA terrorists, including its Darrang unit secretary Arabinda Kalita, are arrested from an unspecified location in the State.

January 3

ULFA ‘foreign secretary’, Parthapratim Bora, involved in the killing of the nephew of Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia in 1991, is arrested from the South Sarania locality of Guwahati city.

January 7

Assam Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia along with three unidentified ULFA mediators meets Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao in New Delhi to discuss the modalities of the proposed negotiations.

January 9

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, M M Jacob, rules out talks with the ULFA unless the outfit eschews violence and abides by the Constitution.

ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa rules out any dialogue with the Government till the army suspends ‘repression on people’.

Bodo Security Force terrorists, in two separate incidents, kill five persons, including a woman, and injure several others as they open indiscriminate firing at Badhapara Chowk and Kukurakala villages in the Darrang district.

Bodo Security Force terrorists kill three Railway Protection Force personnel during an attack at the Sesapan station in Kokrajhar district and also loot three 303 rifles.

Bodo Security Force terrorists kill two Central Reserve Police Force personnel in an attack at Khasikala market under Sidli police station in the Bongaigaon district.

September 10

At least 30 persons, including four women and two children, are killed, and 50 others are injured in two powerful explosions, allegedly by Bodo Security Force terrorists, in two compartments of the Alipurduar-Rangapara passenger train between Patilashah and Sarbhog railway stations in the Kokrajhar district.

October 20

Bodo Security Force terrorists open indiscriminate firing and kill four persons at Jiranga in the Sonitpur district.

October 21

At least 43 persons are killed and 150 others sustain injuries during a bomb explosion inside a passenger bus at the Paltan Bazaar area of Guwahati city.

November 23

The Union Government proscribes Bodo Security Force with immediate effect.

November 24

Two ULFA terrorists are killed and a soldier is injured during an encounter at Dimoruholi in the Dibrugarh district

November 29

Suspected ULFA terrorists kill a leader of the Congress party, Achyut Kakati, and his Personal Security Officer at Dimoro Charalia in the Nagaon district.

December 7

21 technocrats of a French company, operating on the Oil India Limited (OIL) fields in upper Assam, leave the State following threats from the ULFA.

December 12

Bodo Security Force terrorists attack an Assam Police Battalion camp at Sarakhola near Kokrajhar and kill two police personnel. They decamp with 44 SLRs, five LMGs, three rifles and 900 rounds of ammunition.

December 13

Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia states that 2830 surrendered ULFA terrorists have been rehabilitated under different Government schemes.

December 21

Chief Minister Saikia announces in the State Legislative Assembly that between July 1991 and December 10, 1992, 202 persons were killed in 203 terrorism-related incidents. There were 35 cases of bomb blasts in which 83 persons lost their lives and 31 cases of abduction. 3206 ULFA terrorists surrendered during the period.
