February 27

United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) terrorists kill the State PWD and Forest Minister, Nagen Sharma assassinated by ULFA terrorists.Four others are also killed in the attack, in Nalbari district.

March 5

State Veterinary Minister Hiranya Konwar escapes assassination attempt by ULFA terrorists near Moran, Sibsagar district.

March 14

Chief Minister Mahanta alleges that Pakistan's High Commissioner in Bangladesh is playing an active role in sending ULFA terrorists to Pakistan for arms training. He also points that ISI operatives have stepped up subversive activities in the Northeast.

March 15

Union Home Minister L.K. Advani informs Parliament that operations against the Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT) have been suspended after the group agreed to abide by the Indian Constitution.

March 29

Union government and BLT arrive at an agreement on 'ground rules for truce' and to se tup a Joint Monitoring Group to oversee the ceasefire.

March 30

Chief Minister Mahanta reveals on the floor of the State Assembly that Muslim United Liberation Tigers of Assam (MULTA) and Muslim United Liberation Front of Assam (MULFA) are active in the State and adds that activists of the two terrorist outfits are receiving training in foreign countries.

April 2

Assam Police discloses that 62 suspected terrorists, belonging to various outfits operating in India's Northeast region, were arrested in Bangladesh prior to the visit of United States President Bill Clinton to that country.

April 3

Union Home Minister L.K. Advani reiterates government's readiness for talks with ULFA and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorists, provided they laid down arms and agreed for negotiations within the framework of the Indian Constitution.

April 4

In the largest ever surrender of terrorists in the State, 532 cadres of ULFA, NDFB and Karbi National Volunteers, lay down arms in the presence of the State Governor, Lt. Gen (Retd.) S.K. Sinha, at Rang-Ghar, Sibsagar district.

April 6

Chief Minister Mahanta lays on the table of the State Legislative Assembly a Statement entitled ISI Ativities in Assam.

April 9

The United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) - a joint body of the KNV and Karbi People's Front (KPF), massacre 11 persons in Karbi Anglong district.

April 11

BLFT outlines three major demands for settling the Bodo problem. They are: the creation of a separate State of Bodoland on the north bank of the Brahmaputra; creation of an autonomous district council on the south bank of the Brahmaputra; and the inclusion of the Bodos of Karbi Anglong district in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

The UPDS terrorists gun down 11 persons in two separate incidents in Karbi Anglong district.

May 18

Six persons, including an executive magistrate, killed in an ambush laid by Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) terrorists near Haflong, North Cachar Hills district.

May 27

The Self-styled Assistant Publicity Secretary, Central Committee leader, and editor of ULFA's website newsletter Swadhinata also known as Freedom, Swadhinata Phukan, alias Kabiranjan Saikia, killed in an encounter with security forces in Gendheli, Jorhat district.

May 30

Security forces arrest six ISI agents from Ghograpar, Nalbari district, and recover incriminating documents from them.

June 30

Three security force personnel killed and two others injured in an ambush laid by DHD terrorists in North Cachar Hills district.

July 11

12 National Socialist Council of Nagaland--Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) terrorists killed in an encounter with security forces in Bholapunji, Cachar district.

July 15

United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) terrorists massacre 10 persons, including two women and four children, in Langparpang, Karbi Anglong district.

July 31

National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorists blow up two bogies of passenger train bound for Rangiya at Soonmari, about 60 km from Guwahati, killing 14 passengers.

August 1

NDFB terrorists explode a bomb on a passenger train killing 12 and injuring several others near Tezpur.

August 12

Four ULFA terrorists killed in an encounter with army in Tinsukia.

August 15

Three hundred ULFA terrorists including one of its top leaders Lohit Deuri surrendered before Assam’s Chief Minister. A 'commander' of ULFA, Anil Bora alias Basant Phukan killed in an encounter with police in Dibrugarh.

August 18

Six terrorists including four of the ULFA and two of the Rabha National Security (RNS) surrendered Four hardcore ULFA terrorists killed in an encounter with army in Tinsukia.

August 19

Beneshawar Brahama, President of the Bodo Sahitya Shaba killed by suspected NDFB terrorists at Guwahati.

August 21

NDFB terrorists kill five Muslim civilians in Dhubri. At Garagaon, another group of NDFB terrorists kill Bodo MLA Mohini Basumatary.

August 25

Bodo terrorists kill five persons in a landmine blast in Kokrajhar district. The killed include two security force personnel and three suspected Muslim terrorists being taken for interrogation.

September 10

An ULFA terrorist, who was the main accused in the killing of Sanjoy Gosh, General Secretary of an NGO, AVARD-NE, killed in an encounter in Jorhat.

September 12

Suspension of operations by security forces against the BLT in Assam further extended for one year following an agreement between the Central government, the Assam Government and the BLT. The extension comes into effect on September 15.

September 14

Suspected terrorists of NSCN-IM and UPDS kill eleven people including ten policemen in an ambush near Diphu.

September 16

Two hundred ULFA terrorists operating in central Assam’s Nagaon and Morigaon districts surrendered with their ‘commander’ Pranab Bora alias Swapnil Deka Raja.

September 18

A news report stated that in a special joint operation conducted over a period of two weeks, eighteen ULFA terrorists were killed in Bhutan.

September 28

Three terrorists of the NDFB and one security force personnel killed in an encounter in Nalbari district.

September 29

Ten ULFA terrorists killed in an encounter with security force personnel at Sareswar.

October 23

15 people killed by suspected ULFA terrorists killed in two separate incidents in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts.

October 25

68 terrorists, including 54 ULFA cadre, 10 MULTA insurgents and four NDFB terrorists, surrender in Assam.

ULFA terrorists massacre nine persons and injure 12 more in Nalbari district.

Section 144 of the CRPC imposed in Nalbari to prevent breach of public peace and tranquility. The Chief Minister claims that a political party with a 'long association' with ULFA is responsible for the recent massacres.

November 16

10 members of a non-Assamese community killed in Sibsagar district at a time when a parliamentary team of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on a tour to monitor the law and order situation in the State.

November 20

In his meeting with the Union Home Minister, the Chief Minister demands more number of security forces to tackle the law and oder problem.

November 22

Assam State unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) asks the Union government to announce a unilateral cease-fire agaist all terrorist outfits in the State.

November 25

Eight woodcutters klled by NDFB terrorists in the Lung Sung forest reserve.

November 26

Four non-Assamese, 'Biharis' killed by ULFA terrorists. Chief Minister alleges that the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is aiding and abetting terrorism in the region.

November 27

The Chief Minister, speaking at a Peace Rally, urges Central government to adopt a 'Kashmir type method' to tackle insurgency in Assam.

November 28

Three non-Assamese, Biharis, killed by ULFA terrorists in Tinsukia district.

November 30

22 persons -- a majority of them non-Assamese, including eight Bihari truck drivers -- killed in three separate massacres in Bongaigaon district.

December 3

Central government despatches 30 additional para-military companies to the State to launch 'pro-active operations' against terrorists.

11 BLT terrorists killed in an internecine clash with the NDFB terrorists in Barpeta district.18 additional companies of CRPF deployed in 18 districts of the State.

December 13

I D Swami, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs,speaking in the Parliament, confirms the reports that ULFA has been procuring arms from the Chinese Army.

December 17

Army sources claim that the ULFA chief, Paresh Baruah has been injured and his deputy, Raju Baruah killed in an internecine clash in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh.

December 18

Paresh Baruah calls up news channels to contradict the reports of the clash.

December 20

Four NDFB terrorists killed in an encounter inside the Manas National Park in Bongaigaon district.

December 21

NDFB declared an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 by the Central government.Sixteen civilians, including ten Bhutanese traders, killed in separate incidents by suspected BLT terrorists in Barpeta, Darrang and Nalbari district.

December 23

Government of Bhutan blames the BLT for the massacre of its citizens in Assam.
