Three police personnel killed in an attack by suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) terrorists on a camp of the 7th battalion of Assam police, in Bhumka, Kokrajhar district

January 9

Three cadres of the Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) terrorist outfit arrested by Guwahati police from a hideout in Gitanagar area.

January 9

The office of the 28th battalion of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in Simaluguri area, Dibrugarh district, is detected by police.

January 21

150 ULFA cadres, six NDFB men and three BLT cadres surrender in Tamulpur, Nalbari District.

Seven civilians are killed by suspected NDFB terrorists in Darrang District.

Seven policemen killed in multiple ambushes laid by terrorists belonging to different outfits in the State.

NDFB Deputy commander-in-chief arrested from Santipur Village in Darrang district.

Union Home Minister L.K Advani informs the Upper House of the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha) on the ULFA’s four-point blockade programme on the exploration of new oilfields in Assam – (i) obstruction to drilling of new oilfields, (ii) resistance to pumping out of oil to places outside Assam, (iii) ban on construction of pipelines and drilling on public and private land and (iv) resistance to any forcible drilling work.

Six ULFA cadres arrested in a raid on the ‘madhya mandal’ office of the ULFA in Nagaon district.

May 23

Three ULFA cadres are killed in two separate incidents in Dhubri district.

May 25

102 terrorists––-60 ULFA, 16 NDFB, 18 Kuki National Volunteers (KNV) and eight BLT––surrender in Nagaon.

Three ULFA terrorists, including a woman cadre, are arrested in Dispur.

June 29

Seven police personnel are killed in an explosion set-off by BLT terrorists in two separate villages near Rangiya, Kamrup district.

August 7

27 Islamist militants belonging to various outfits, two ‘officers’ and two agents of Pakistan’s external intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), are arrested from different parts of Assam.

ULFA publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary, in a statement released to the press, identifies 108 police officials for selective attacks.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Dhubri parliamentary constituency Pannalal Oswal is abducted.

Five BLT terrorists are killed and the body of an abducted tea estate executive is recovered following an operation in Baghmara village, Barpeta District.

Assam Governor Lt Gen (Retd) SK Sinha offers ‘safe passage’ to ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa while paying a visit to his parents at Nazira in Sibasagar district.

October 30

Governor Sinha offers ‘safe passage’ to the ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Barua to enable him to meet his family.

November 2

Barpeta Deputy Commissioner Swapnanil Baruah escapes unhurt in an ULFA attack on his vehicle.

November 4

Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta announces a 10-day 'safe passage' offer to terrorists of all outfits from December 21 to enable them to visit their parents and relatives.

November 5

ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah, in a telephonic interview to a regional daily, Asomiya Pratidin, rejects the 10-day safe passage offer of the Chief Minister and asks for a plebiscite on sovereignty for Assam.

November 7

Three police personnel are killed in an attack by unidentified militants in Boko area, Kamrup district.

November 10

The coordination committee of surrendered ULFA (SULFA) cadres, through a statement in Guwahati, asks both the ULFA and the government to announce an immediate and unconditional cease-fire to pave the way for negotiations.

November 14

Nalbari district Superintendent of Police’s (SP) convoy is ambushed by ULFA terrorists in Madhuri Chowk, Barpeta district. The SP, A J Baruah, escapes unhurt.

December 5
