Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harunor Rashid during a press conference at his office on April 25 said that Hefazat-e Islam (HeI) Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque had links with the militants who carried out the grenade attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, reports Dhaka Tribune. Police arrested Mamunul Haque from Dhaka's Mohammadpur area on April 18 for mobilizing violent movements demanding removal of Bangabandhu’s sculpture and protesting against the arrival of the Indian Prime Minister in March. Harunor Rashid said Mamunul had also gone to Pakistan with one of the militants to contact the extremist groups there. Harunor Rashid also said: “He had political ambitions. He had been thinking about grabbing power with the help of Jamaat-e-Islami.”
