At least nine persons including two Central reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel and seven civilians were injured in a grenade attack by militants in Partap Park under Lal Chowk area in Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 2, reports Daily Excelsior. Militants hurled a grenade in Partap Park in Srinagar in the afternoon of February 2, where CRPF personnel were deployed for security duty. The grenade exploded in the corner of the Park, injuring nine people. Security Forces (SFs) cordoned off the area and conducted searches for the militants responsible for the grenade attack. However, no one was arrested.

Four political leaders were released from MLA hostel sub-jail in Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 2, reports Daily Excelsior. Authorities released People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Shopian, Mohammad Yousuf, National Conference (NC) leaders, Abdul Majid Larmi, Ghulam Nabi Bhat and Muhammad Shafi. These leaders were detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) ahead of August 5, 2019, when special status of J&K was scrapped. Sources said that few more mainstream politicians detained at MLA hostel will be released soon. Sixteen political leaders are still under detention in MLAs hostel.

Pakistan Army shelled forward posts and villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District of J&K on February 2, reports Daily Excelsior. A defence spokesperson said, there was no immediate report of any casualty in the Pakistani firing and shelling in Balakot and Mendhar sectors. “Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire [CFA] violation by firing with small arms and shelling with mortars along LoC in Balakot and Mendhar sectors around 7 pm, prompting befitting retaliation by the Indian Army,” the spokesman said.

Pakistani troops violated the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) in Gurez sector in Bandipora District and Tangdhar sector in Kupwara Districts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 2, reports Daily Excelsior. An official said that Pakistani troops in the morning of February 2, violated CFA in Gurez sector of the Bandipora District injuring Sandeep Yadav, an Army personnel posted at Pant Post of Bagtore area of Gurez. Pakistani troops also violated CFA in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara District of J&K. The official said that Pakistani troops manning Papa-1 post fired with small arms towards Indian post Vayou where 39 Gorkha Rifles(GR) of Army is posted. However, no loss of life and property was reported. He added that Army also retaliated.

Police arrested the brother of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) ‘commander’ from Karimabad in Pulwama District of J&K in connection with the investigations into ferrying of three militants who were killed in an encounter in Jammu District on January 31, reports Daily Excelsior. Police arrested Shoib Manzoor, brother of JeM ‘commander’ Zahid Manzoor from Karimabad after his name surface during the interrogation of trucker who ferried the three foreign militants. The trucker during the interrogation has revealed that Shoib Manzoor had received three militants of JeM last year and gave them shelter in his house. In the meantime, the youth in Karimabad took to streets against the arrest of Manzoor and pelted stones on the Security Forces (SFs) who fired tear smoke to disperse them.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA), on February 2, carried out searches at five places, including that of a Sarpanch (head of the Panchayat, village level local self-Government institution), in connection with a case in which a senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officer was arrested while ferrying militants outside the valley, reports Daily Excelsior. Multiple NIA teams, raided various parts of Kulgam and Shopian Districts, carried out the searches at the residences of Rafi Ahmed Rather, an arrested militant, at Zainapora. The NIA teams entered into the house of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Adil Hussain and Sarpanch Tariq Ahmed Mir besides the houses of Over Ground Workers (OGWs) at Maldera in Shopian and Kulgam, the officials said. Some documents have been recovered and these are being analysed, the officials said. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported the incident of arrest on January 11. Reportedly, an i-10 car was intercepted in Kulgam area and in the car was Jammu Kashmir Police (JKP) officer Davinder Singh with two top Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) militants. As the car approached the checkpoint, the vehicle was stopped and the four were arrested.

Officials said, the seizure was made during a search operation along the Line of Control (LoC) in Magnar belt. Three hand grenades, PEK (Plastic Explosive Kirkee) explosives, 19 rounds of 7.62 mm and four Chinese batteries were also recovered from the hideout, they said.

Aijaz Ahmad Mir, a former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Wachi area in Shopian District, and Shakeel Ahmed Qalandar, former president of the Federation Chamber of Industries Kashmir (FCIK), were released after six months of detention from the MLA hostel Sub-Jail and Central Jail in Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on February 4, reports Daily Excelsior. Mir and Qalandar were taken into preventive custody in August 2019 ahead of abrogation of Article 370 of Indian Constitution. Now with the release of Mir and Qalandar, the number of politicians and trade unionists in detention has reduced to 25, adds The Times of India.

A defence spokesman said, “At about 4.30 pm, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing of small arms and shelling with mortars along LoC in Shahpur and Kirni sectors in Poonch district. The encounter took place when three persons coming from Baramulla towards Srinagar, were stopped by special Police naka (barricade) party for checking after they got suspicious about them but one of them fired on the Security Forces (SFs) leading to an exchange of fire in which two militants were killed and a CRPF trooper was killed. Another militant who was injured later succumbed to his injuries. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vijay Kumar, identified the three militants as Zia ur Rehman, Khateeb and Fayaz Umar. “Rehman who belonged to district Budgam was affiliated with LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba). NIA also raided the house of Sameer Ahmad Dar at Gundibagh in Kakapora, he added. Sameer, a driver by profession, was arrested by J&K Police along with two others JeM Over Ground Workers (OGWs) — Asif Ahmed Malik and Sartaj Ahmad Mantu — following the Nagrota encounter. The NIA in a statement said, “A furniture shop owner, Shakir Bashir Magrey provided shelter and other logistical assistance to the suicide-bomber Adil Ahmad Dar. He was introduced to Adil Ahmad Dar in mid-2018 by a Pakistani militant Mohammad Umar Farooq and he became a full-time OGW (Over Ground Worker) of JeM.” Magrey (22), resident of Hajibal in Kakapora in Pulwama, was arrested by NIA for his alleged involvement in the Pulwama terror attack (February 14, 2019). “Accused Shakir Bashir Magrey has further revealed that he had harboured Adil Ahmad Dar and Pakistani militant Mohammad Umar Farooq in his house from late 2018 till the attack in February 2019, and assisted them in the preparation of the IED (Improvised Explosive Device),” the statement added. Magrey was produced before the NIA Special Court at Jammu District, on February 28, and remanded to 15 days of NIA custody for his detailed interrogation.
