Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik, has said that the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) was a new face of al Qaeda, according to The News. "We have no doubt in our minds now that al Qaeda and the Tehrik-e-Taliban are one and the same thing. The nexus between the TTP and al Qaeda is there and their activities are continuing. We are left with no option except to strike against them in Bajaur. When we tried to establish one post they fired at and killed our people," Rehman Malik told representatives of foreign media at a special briefing arranged at the Interior Ministry in Islamabad on September 1-evening. He said the prime minister has given a three-pronged strategy to deal with the problem and dialogue and negotiations is one of them. However, he made it clear that the Government would enter into negotiations with only those who would abide by the law and not side with the lawbreakers. "To a great extent it is working," he claimed. He disclosed that Maulvi Namdar, the commander of a banned organisation, was killed while three groups, which were involved in militant activities in Bara, were banned. The TTP has also been banned, he told the foreign media. Malik said the Government has suspended operations against the militants and extremists but only for the holy month of Ramazan, mainly to facilitate the displaced people from these areas to go back to their homes. "But that does not mean that if somebody fires from that side we will not react. If there is one fire we will fire back nine times and we will make sure that it continues. If we noticed any training activity, any re-grouping, any firing at any police officer, Army personnel or a civilian, we will react," Malik warned. He said the Government has not signed any deal or entered into any agreement with these militants. "Not a single agreement is signed with anybody because we do not want to encourage these militants. There have been many requests, aired by these militants publicly (on electronic media) for ceasefire but we have not done it. We will continue (the operation) and ensure all possible steps to make Pakistan free of terrorism," he said.

Unidentified gunmen fired shots at Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani’s motorcade in a high security zone on the Islamabad Highway on September 3, Daily Times reported. Rawalpindi City Police Officer Rao Muhammad Iqbal said the motorcade was on its way to the airport to pick the prime minister. "The [prime minister’s] car was going towards the airport when it was fired upon from a small hill… Two bullets hit the driver’s window." "The prime minister and his staff were not in the car," Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah said. A statement by the Prime Minister’s House said two of a number of sniper shots fired on the prime minister’s vehicle hit the window on the driver’s side. "However, because of the robust and comprehensive security measures, the prime minister and all the members of his motorcade remained unharmed," the statement said. Police said more than 20 suspects had been arrested and were being questioned. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Talking to Reuters, a TTP spokesman said Prime Minister Gilani was attacked because he was responsible for the ongoing offensives against militants in the northwest of Pakistan. "We will continue such attacks on Government officials and installations," said Muslim Khan, the Taliban spokesman in Swat.

The Maulana Fazlullah-led militants in Swat on September 7 said they would not release the kidnapped Chinese engineers till the release of the arrested Taliban militants. The spokesman of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Muslim Khan, said 38 security force personnel were in their captivity for more than a month but the Government was least bothered about them. Muslim Khan said first around 70 of their colleagues, currently in the Government custody, would be swapped for the 38 captives and then they would discuss the release of the Chinese engineers and their Pakistani guard and driver. "Until the exchange of prisoners, the Chinese will be our guests… We have no intention to harm them," he said.

Security personnel arrested on September 8 a teenage boy they claimed was a suicide bomber near a church in the Cantonment area at Nowshera in North West Frontier Province. He was identified as Mir Janan. The Officials said that Mir was from Makeen area of South Waziristan. During interrogation, the boy is said to have claimed that he belonged to Baitullah Mehsud’s Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan. According to officials, he said that he had been brought to the area by a man on a motorbike. The Inter Service Public Relations said the bomber‘s target was a security convoy. The boy was wearing a suicide vest packed with 10 to 15 kilogrammes of explosives. The vest was defused by bomb disposal personnel. He also carried a hand-grenade and he tried to use it by removing its safety pin, but he was prevented from doing so. Later, bomb disposal personnel had tactfully persuaded the bomber to take off the vest.

The spokesman for the Tehrik-e-Taliban, Darra Adamkhel, Mohammad, claimed that six SF personnel were killed and the double cabin vehicle they were travelling in was completely destroyed when an IED on the main road near the FC check-post at Akhurwal exploded at about 1:30 pm (PST) when a military convoy was passing through the area. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Swat said that no shariah law of the NWFP government would be acceptable unless Sufi Muhammad, chief of the banned Tehreek Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi, approved it. Talking to reporters, TTP spokesman, Muslim Khan, said that the NWFP government must first take Muhammad’s approval for imposing the shariah in Malakand division under the Shari Nazam-e-Adle Act 1999, otherwise they would not accept it. The statement came after an announcement by the NWFP government that it will enforce shariah law in Malakand division during the month of Ramazan.
