The Guwahati Police on January 2 released the photograph of Pranjal Deka alias Biju Saraniya alias Bhambhal, a cadre of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA)’s 709th battalion, who according to security agencies, masterminded all the three blasts in Guwahati on January 1, reports Assam Tribune. Additional Superintendent of Police (City), Joyshree Khersa, said that Deka, who hails from Dwarkuchi village in Baksa District, is still holed up in the city along with at least five other ULFA militants. “Combing operation is on and we have intensified vigil across the State,” Khersa said, adding that Deka is wanted in connection with several other recent blasts. The Hindu adds that Trinitrotoluene was used in the three improvised explosive device blasts in Guwahati. Experts of the State Forensic Science Department revealed this to the State Home Department after preliminary examinations of the blast sites and laboratory analysis of the blast remnants.

Meghalaya Police neutralised the ‘finance cell’ of the Manipur-based Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) when they arrested five suspected militants, including two women cadres, from a rented house in the Malki area of capital Shillong in the night of January 8, according to Telegraph. A computer, incriminating documents, including demand notes, INR 50,000 and four mobile sets were recovered from the incident site. They were identified as Ningthoujam Ronen, his wife Chamcal Bino Bala, Haobijan Dingku Singh, his wife Pramo Haobijan Maipakpi, and Thokchom Ibomcha Singh. Police said the KYKL cadres had set up the ‘finance cell’ in Shillong only a few months back. The modus operandi of the KYKL was to distribute the demand notes in Manipur and collect the money in Shillong through courier. The arrested cadres were booked under Sections 120b, 121 and 384 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 read with Section 10/13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Police said Gokul Giri Nepali had supplied about 300 AK-47 rifles and large quantity of live ammunition and explosives while Somarjit Hashu had gone to collect some consignment from Gokul’s house. The duo confessed during interrogation that two AK-47 rifles along with 233 live rounds of AK 47, which were smuggled from Myanmar, were passed on to a militant group two days back. According to Police, the duo also revealed that the BW was commanded by one ‘Lieutenant Colonel’ James and was active in the entire Northeast, especially in Assam.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Bishnupur District, K. Jayenta Singh, said the Police had thwarted the plan of Kunjo and some officials and pradhans (chiefs) to hand over INR 560, 000 from the Indira Awas Yojana fund, meant for construction of houses for 70 beneficiaries, to militants. The raid followed information that the militants were heading for the BDO office to collect the cash. Two Army personnel and a National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militant were killed in an encounter at Garugaon on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border area under Dhekiajuli Police Station of Sonitpur District at about 4.45am (IST) on August 16, according to Assam Tribune. Official sources said the Army personnel were conducting a search operation in the Garugaon area after getting intelligence inputs about the movement of militants. During the search operation, the Army came across a four-member group of the Ranjan Daimary faction of the NDFB and were engaged in an encounter with militants lasting for about an hour. Security Forces (SFs) shot dead two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants at Nagapara hills under Boko Police station in the Kamrup District in the night of August 29, according to Telegraph. Army sources said about four militants were taking shelter in a house and when the SFs raided the house, the militants opened fire. In the ensuing gunbattle, two militants died while two others escaped under cover of darkness. The site of the incident is about 50 kilometres from the capital city Guwahati. Though the two militants are yet to be identified, Police claimed that both were from the 709th battalion of ULFA and probably new recruits. One five kilograms of improvised explosive device, a grenade, one 9-mm pistol, ammunition and an unspecified amount of Bangladeshi currency notes were recovered from the possession of the slain militants.

While 10 militants, including one female cadre, were arrested from one hideout, four others were arrested from another place. Police recovered eight mobile handset, one 7.65 pistol with five rounds, one .9-mm pistol with eight live rounds and some documents from their possession. Police said the 14 cadres arrested were part of the same gang, which had earlier abducted three drivers belonging to Manipur branch of the Food Corporation of India. While two drivers were released after they reportedly paid INR.8000 to the abductors, the other driver, identified as Asem Angou (51), a resident of Lambia Challou in Imphal East District, who was kept in confinement due to non-payment of ransom, was rescued by the Police on November 6.

Police launched a massive search to recover five kilogrammes of RDX (Cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine) which was kept in the house of Krishna Rajbongshi at Goroimari Panigaon in Nalbari District, who had allegedly planted one of the bicycle bombs in Nalbari on November 22. Krishna, who was arrested in the night of November 25, also confessed before Police that there were three more bicycles stuffed with explosives and ready to be detonated. A Police Officer said Krishna did not know about the location of the cycles. “We are trying to find out,” he said, adding that Krishna was still being interrogated. Meanwhile, a college lecturer Narayan Thakuria and ULFA linkman Kumud Thakuria were also arrested for their suspected involvement in the twin blasts. “We only found the pit but the explosives which were in it were missing. Probably ULFA removed the RDX after they heard of Krishna’s arrest,” the Police Officer said. “Five kilogrammes of RDX can have a devastating impact depending on where and how the explosives are placed,” he said
