The Shillong Times reports that the group of seven Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres armed with AK-47 rifles and SLR rifles shot dead two gate-keeper of Songsak village, West Khasi Hills District on January 19. The two gate-keepers are identified as Arbinius D Sangma and Bahkan G Marak, both residents of Songsak village. The State Police have launched a massive manhunt to arrest the gunmen involved in the killing. The Police said the killings were related to extortion money demanded by the GNLA earlier and also to create fear psychosis among the people, particularly the coal businessmen of the area. Sources informed that the GNLA had earlier demanded an amount of INR 2 million from the Songsak Mahari toll gate in West Khasi Hills District. The killing comes barely ten days after Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh, during his visit to Shallang Police outpost, had promised the local people that the outpost would soon be upgraded into a full-fledged Police Station to provide full security to the coal traders and residents of the area.

Nagaland Post reports that with six hostages abducted by militants in Mizoram untraced for a week, border fencing along the India-Bangladesh border has been stopped, officials said on April 2. “The Mizoram Armed Police, BSF (Border Security Force) and Police are continuing their combing operation to locate the captives,” a Mizoram home department official told reporters in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram. He said the BSF had sought help from Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) fearing the hostages may have been taken across the border by the abductors. A manager and five supervisors of a Guwahati-based company were abducted by heavily-armed militants on March 26 from their work shed at Bunghmum in Lunglei District in southwestern Mizoram, 200 kilometers south of Aizawl. India is erecting a fence and putting flood lights along the 4,095-km India-Bangladesh border to check militants and crime and to curb infiltration.

Meghalaya Police commandos attacked and destroyed one of the largest militant camps belonging to the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) near Sobokgre village of East Garo Hills in a fifteen minute encounter in the morning of May 26. Commandos on the search for the GNLA camp came under sustained fire from ‘sentries’ positioned at lookout posts outside the camp area just after 10 am. The militants used heavy weaponry firing several rocket propelled grenades against the Police and the commandos also retaliated with 2-inch mortars to blast their way through. However, there were no casualties from either the Police or the militants’ side. “The camp was almost like an entire village closeted as can be seen from its huge size. We believe it to be their general headquarters and Sohan D Shira was present in the camp during the encounter,” said Police.

Following inputs from the three arrested National Liberation Front of Tripura-Biswamohan faction (NLFT-BM) militants, Tripura Police conducted searches in 10 locations across the State in the past 24 hours, reports Times of India. Sources said during a search in the houses of arrested militants, who have been provided Government accommodation under rehabilitation package following their surrender in 2004, Police in Agartala had seized some incriminating documents belonging to the outfit. The seizure also included a letter addressed to NLFT-BM ‘Chairman’ Biswamohan Debbarma in Kokborok dialect. The news report states that NLFT-BM has recently recruited some 70 freshers in the outfit, who are now undergoing arms training in Myanmar and Bangladesh. In addition, Biswamohan keeps shifting his base between Bangladesh and sometimes in Aizwal (Mizoram) and the surrendered people were actively associated with NLFT-BM network, taking advantage of the rehabilitation package. According to the report, NLFT-BM has been suffering from shortage of funds for the past one year and they could not even pay arms rent to Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K). As a result, the NLFT-BM wanted some money to procure arms and repay the rent. SFs had arrested three former NLFT-BM militants and collaborators, Dhanu Koloi, Bishu Koloi and Ratasree Koloi on June 17.
