In the largest ever surrender of militants in Assam, 532 cadres of United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and Karbi National Volunteers (KNV), laid down arms before Governor Lt Gen (Retd) S. K. Sinha at Ranghar, on April 4. Of those who surrendered, 436 belong to the ULFA, 19 to the NDFB and 77 to the KNV. The Army claimed that among the ULFA cadres who surrendered, 200 belonged to the outfit’s armed wing. A sum of Rs 30,260, Chinese grenades, tape recorders, audio cassettes, electronic goods and incriminating documents were recovered from his possession. The arrested terrorist is believed to be involved in the killing of the former Tripura Health Minister Bimal Sinha on March 31, 1998.
