Police in Karachi reportedly foiled an attack on Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali with the arrest of a terrorist affiliated to the outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) on April 1. The man was found with about six kilograms of explosives, a hand grenade, several detonators and bomb making material, said Police Inspector Amjad Kiyani. "The big target was the prime minister," he said, adding that the suspect had planned to plant explosives on a bridge. However, Inspector General of Police, Syed Kamal Shah, denied news reports about the foiled attempt on Prime Minister Jamali. ‘Speculative report was rubbish and stupid’, said Shah.

The Karachi Police have arrested six Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-alami (HuMA) terrorists from a house in the Manzoor Colony area on April 12 when they were allegedly planning terrorist attacks. "The six men are from the banned HuMA. They have been arrested on a lead given by nine HuMA activists who were earlier arrested and the Sindh IG presented them before journalists at a press conference on April 6," an unnamed official was quoted as saying in Daily Times. The law-enforcement agencies have arrested five members of a terrorist group, who had planned to attack main official buildings and embassies in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, said Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed at a press conference in Islamabad on August 21. The agencies also seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including bombs, grenades, rockets, rocket launchers, detonators and around 50 other explosive devices, he added. The group had reportedly planned attacks on the Presidency, the Prime Minister House, General Headquarters (GHQ), the US embassy, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) House, Convention Centre and Lal Haveli on the night between August 13 and 14. He said the group had links with terrorists who were arrested in Gujrat, including Ghailani, Talha and Shifa Ibrahim and the security forces were on the look out for two Egyptians, still at large, identified as Qari Ismael and Shaikh Essa. Also, according to Rashid, the Imam of Lal Masjid, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi played an important role in this conspiracy and the law-enforcement agencies were searching for him.

Two soldiers of the Frontier Corps were killed and eight others sustained injuries when terrorists fired three missiles on a camp of the troops at Wana in South Waziristan. Separately, a military truck was blown up by a remote-controlled bomb at Maidano, close to Razmak, in North Waziristan killing at least one soldier and wounding three others. According to The News, there was another explosion at the same spot where the military vehicle was destroyed while two unexploded bombs were recovered and later defused by the troops. No reports of loss of life were reported in the second explosion.

"We have arrested Zahid Hussain who is accused of firing at a mosque of Karampur in 1995 and killing three worshippers," said Vehari district police officer Muhammad Mukhtar Tikka. Zahid had been on the run for nine years and was hiding in the border area of Iran, according to Daily Times. The News reports that on October 14, one of the two Chinese hostages and five kidnappers were killed as a result of an operation by the Pakistan Army commandos near Chakmalay village in the South Waziristan province. Wang Ping, a Chinese engineer working on the Gomal Zam Dam project, sited in parts of South Waziristan tribal agency and Tank district, was killed in the operation, while his other colleague, Wang Ende, survived. Ping was the chief surveyor in the private Chinese company that had brought more than 80 persons from China to work on the project. Corps Commander Peshawar, Lt-Gen Safdar Hussain, stated that the kidnappers shot dead the Chinese hostage, prompting the troops to kill the five kidnappers and rescue the second Chinese engineer. The troops reportedly recovered five AK-47 rifles, one rocket-launcher, four rockets, four hand grenades, and 17 magazines of bullets from the possession of the terrorists.
