A terror attack was averted when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted in the Fruit Mandi of Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan failed to explode on April 13, reports The Express Tribune. A senior Police Official said that the IED was concealed in tomato crates. “Only the fuse of the IED went off causing panic and stampede in the market,” SP Mohammad Jaffar said. Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) officials said the bomb weighed around two kilogrammes. “There have been no casualties because the IED did not explode,” a BDS official said. However, no outfit claimed responsibility for the attack.

A Police Constable, identified as Muhammad Amil, was injured when unidentified militants opened fire at a Police van in Hangu District on April 16, reports The Express Tribune. According to Saddar Police Station House Officer (SHO) Abid Khan, a Police team was patrolling the area to check on security arrangements for a polio drive when unidentified militants ambushed them at Barabaskhel Bridge in the morning. Following the incident, Police and Security Forces launched a search operation in the area and arrested 15 suspects. A large cache of weapons were also recovered from their possession.

Three militants were killed and two Frontier Corps (FC) officials injured in an encounter in Khujal Khel area of Landikotal tehsil (revenue unit) in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 29, reports The Express Tribune. A Security Forces (SFs) official said that after receiving intelligence reports, an operation was carried out around midnight in Khujal Khel when SFs came under fire. A cache of explosives was also recovered from the militants’ hideout. According to the official, the slain militants were wanted for the attack in April, 2014 on the Landikotal cantonment.

Intelligence Agencies had informed the Police about the threat beforehand and the area was monitored for suspicious activity. According to details, four BRA militants arrived in the area on April 6 with advanced weapons and explosive material with the alleged intention to damage the pipeline. However, the Police thwarted their attempt and arrested three of the suspects while one managed to escape.

He further added that 10 security personnel also sustained injuries during the operation and the "Forces also destroyed six vehicles of miscreants". He added that the militants resorted to indiscriminate fire upon seeing the Rangers, leading to an exchange of fire in which one militant was killed and a law enforcer injured. A Police team of District Malir killed 13 militants belonging to al Qaeda and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) during a shootout in Deluxe Town bungalows of Sohrab Goth area in Gadap Town of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on December 22, reports The News. According to details, on a tip-off about the presence of TTP 'commander' Khan Zaman Mehsud and his associates in Sohrab Goth, Police took action. Seeing the Police, the militants opened fire which was retaliated. The police after a brief shootout said they managed to arrest 13 militants in injured condition who later succumbed to their injuries, while their 'commander' Khan Mehsud with some of his aides fled under the cover of fire. In addition, the Police claimed to have arrested a would-be suicide bomber who was wearing a suicide jacket and had failed to explode himself. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rao Mohammed Anwar of District Malir said the Police arrested a suicide bomber. During the search of their hideout, the Police recovered three Kalashnikovs, four TT pistols, two repeater rifles, one sniper rifle, three 9mm pistols, five kilograms of explosives, 10 kilograms of ball bearings and hundreds of bullets from their possession. The two extortionists had faked their identity and allegedly posed as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants demanding PKR 500,000 from Jahan Ali, a cashier at the Nobel Money Exchange Company, and had threatened to kill him in case he did not pay. Ali had complained to Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Chaudhry Shafique Ahmad, which had led to their arrest. A senior CIA officer said that the extortionists had fired shots at Ali’s house a few days ago and had threatened to kidnap and kill his children if he failed to pay them. This had forced Ali to relocate his family, the official said. The CIA traced the suspects using its cell phone tracking facility.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Cheema said that subversive acts, including bomb and grenade attacks, were taking place in Quetta for a long time under the supervision of UBA chief Abdul Nabi Bangulzai who had used young boys to carry out explosions.
