Two Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) militants were arrested by the Police in Karachi on April 1, reports Daily Times. According to officials of Sindh Police Crime Investigation Department’s anti-Extremist Cell (AEC), the arrestees were identified as Sardar Shah alias Sardar Khan and Tahir. The capital city Police arrested three Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, including the mastermind of the Rescue 15 bomb blast on April 18, according to Daily Times. The militants were identified as Shafiqur Rehman alias Adam, Abdul Qayum alias Mufti and Ghulam Tabassum. Police sources said Mullah Shafiq and Ghulam Tabassum were the masterminds of suicide attack on Rescue-15 offices in Sector G-9/1 of Islamabad on June 6, 2009, which killed two Policemen and injured four others. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh Police arrested a high-profile militant belonging to Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in Karachi and recovered a loaded TT pistol from his possession on April 26, according to Daily Times. CID (Operations) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fayyaz Khan said the arrested militant Hakimullah Wali Swati was a close associate of the Amir (Chief) of the TTP in Swat District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Khan further added that the militant had been living in Karachi for a long time and was involved in several robberies at banks and other places to collect funds for militants. He also used to provide hiding places to militants arriving in the city from Swat and northern areas of the country.

One person was killed and five others were injured when a bomb went off in Karachi’s Soldier Bazaar, on April 30, according to Daily Times. The bomb was fixed to a motorcycle parked near a trash site in Hindu Para area of Soldier Bazaar. Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) South Zone Ghulam Nabi Memon said the nature of the blast could not be ascertained, as the explosion site was still being inspected by the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS). BDS Sub-Inspector Ghulam Mustafa said that they had discovered 150 grams of explosive material. “The bomb was planted in a plastic box covered with polythene bags. The homemade explosive was connected with a safety fuse suggesting that it was a timed device,” he added.

A police spokesman said the ammunition was recovered from a car. 41 mortars, 20 kilogrammes explosive, one mortar shell, two artillery shells, one pin of suicide vest, 50 metre cable, three electric detonators, batteries and four Russian made missiles (CND 12) were among the recoveries. The spokesman said the Police signalled the car (RLE-3046) on its way from Khyber Agency to stop at a police checkpost, but the driver instead of following the order sped away the vehicle towards the tribal region. On chasing by the police, he said the car’s driver left the vehicle and managed to escape from the scene.

Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sultan Salahuddin Babar Khattak disclosed the arrests of the suspects Mohammad Wasim alias Baroodi and Abdullah alias Taimur alias Darzi at a press conference at the Central Police Office (CPO). At least 100 kilogrammes of RDX, two RPG rockets, 30-meter detonating cord, five detonators with electrical wire, and a Kalashnikov, a TT pistol, a 9mm pistol with loaded magazines and a motorcycle were recovered from their possession, the IGP said. A militant was killed and two passers-by were injured during a search operation in Matha Speen Khak area of Katlang tehsil (revenue unit) in Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on August 19, reports Dawn. Sources said that Security Forces (SFs) got a tip-off about presence of a militant and launched a joint search operation in the area. The militant was killed when he came out of his house and tried to flee the area. The slain militant was identified as Fazal Qadir, son of Gul Qadir. A CIA Police team arrested five militants in a raid carried out after a tip-off from a Ravi Park resident that terrorists were hiding in the area. The militants were identified as Sarfraz Ahmad, Shabbir Ahmad, Umer Hayat, Hafiz Mahmood and Abid Akram. Interrogations revealed that the arrested suspects belonged to Al-Tauheed Wal-Jihad Group of TTP led by Dr Umer Kundi. Four explosive jackets, eight mortar bombs, 13 fuse mortar bombs, one hand grenade, 32 hand grenade pins, one pistol, one SMG rifle, one roll of detonator card, 13 fake number plates and dozens of bullets were recovered from possession of the militants. The arrested men had received terrorist training at Datta Khel area of North Waziristan in Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA). The attack had claimed lives of 29 people, 19 police officials and a senior officer of an intelligence agency among them, besides injuring 416 others.

A patrolling mobile along with the BDS personnel immediately rushed to the place and evacuated the building, houses and shops and carried out an operation. Six unidentified persons, who were killed in a bomb blast in the Baldia Town of Karachi in the morning of January 8, were identified as five militants and one civilian, according to Dawn. An initial investigation stated that six militants had come to the house at about 3 am (PST) on three motorcycles. They were guests of Ayaz, younger brother of Riaz who was living in the house with his mother, wife and three children. All the militants were in their late teens or early twenties. Five of the dead militants were identified as Riazul Hasan, Mohammad Husain, Shahbaz Lahori, Asif and Zahid. Ayaz was also killed in the blast, while his brother Ibrar was injured. A portion of a house was destroyed in what was described as an accidental blast. "We heard a loud bang at about 7:45am and saw two bodies lying in the debris. A Kalashnikov rifle was beside the bodies," a eyewitness said. Police found a cache of arms and ammunition and suicide vests strapped to the two bodies in the house. The suicide vests were fitted with grenades, they added. The suicide vest of the third militant accidentally triggered the explosion, causing a grenade to explode, investigators said. Police recovered several cartons of tinned food, jihadi literature, books and CDs, stickers of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) pasted inside a trunk containing certifications of graduation from a seminary, cell phones and several SIMs from the debris of the house. Three AK-47 rifles with several dozen rounds, over 25 hand grenades, anti-personnel mines and a pistol were also recovered, Baldia town Superintendent of Police Zahid Husain said. Interior Minister Rehman Malik told journalists that the militants were from Swat.

CID team received a tip off on the presence of at least 10 cadres of LeJ in Peerabad area of Karachi and arrested six of them in a raid near Rasheed graveyard. It was reported that the arrested militants were affiliated with Asif Ramzi faction of LeJ outfit that planned sectarian violence before Muharram (an important period of mourning in Shia Islam) by targeting nine important Shia community members. A cache of weapons including four Kalashnikovs with 1,000 bullets, 10 hand grenades, 25 kg explosive material, 10 metres detonation wire, 12 silencers, four TT pistols and some prohibited medicines were recovered from the possession of the arrested militants.
