20 militants were killed as the Security Forces (SFs) foiled a LTTE sea attack by destroying three boats in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area on March 1, according to Hindustan Times. The Defence Ministry said the LTTE launched 15 boats, including four suicide craft, assisted with simultaneous heavy mortar fire at the SFs directed from the declared 'no fire zone' in the region. "LTTE rebels suffered another defeat at Mullaitivu, when 55 Div troops thwarted an rebel offensive attempt North of Puthumathalan by destroying 2 LTTE boats while damaging another in a separate incident," the defence ministry said, adding, “Heavy fighting was reported in the area between security forces and LTTE since last morning till evening. At least 20 rebels were killed in the clashes." Intercepted LTTE communication confirmed heavy damages to the outfit and the ministry added that senior LTTE leaders, including Soosai and Lawrence, had commanded the attack. The Ministry also said soldiers faced heavy resistance from the LTTE cadres who "seemed to have placed all their heavy artillery and mortar guns in the No Fire Zone (NFZ) demarcated for the civilians". One female cadre of the outfit, in the wake of Army operations, committed suicide by detonating a suicide jacket while others went into hiding, added a Sri Lanka Army report.

Sources said that around 15 militants were killed and three were arrested during clashes that erupted on March 7 when Taliban surrounded the house of pro-government tribal elder Malik Noorzada in a bid to kidnap him. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Mohmand Agency chief Umer Khalid confirmed the attack on SFs and said that several soldiers were still in the custody of Taliban and put forward three conditions for talks with the troops - exchange of prisoners, end of military check-posts in the agency and compensation for the demolished houses of the Taliban leaders and the tribesmen who supported them.

Heavy fighting erupted between the two sides in the Puthukkudiyiruppu East, Iranapalai East and Palamattalam areas as troops attached to the 53rd, 58th and 55th Divisions further close in on the ‘Safe Zone’ from three directions. “The Safe Zone has now been surrounded from all three directions and troops are poised to liberate the civilians trapped inside the Safe Zone clearing paths for them to reach Security Forces controlled areas,” a senior military official told Daily News on March 29. The LTTE is now fighting within a one square kilometre stretch in the Iranapalai East, the last build up area under LTTE control at present, he said, adding, “Heavy fighting erupted in this terrain as 58 Division and 53 Division troops launched simultaneous attacks on Tiger controlled areas cutting off their last available Supply Routes East of Iranapalai from the A-35 road.” The official said that the LTTE is continuing their battle in this narrow stretch constructing earth bunds on a daily basis and troops have to overrun each earth bund to capture the area. ”With the capture of this last build up area the troops have to cross water filled paddy lands and the lagoon to reach the Safe Zone which is now within sight from all battlefronts,” the official added.

The Taliban militants, led by Afghan commander Amir Khitab, have been operating in Doog Darra near the bombed village. They are believed to be behind the suicide attack to subjugate the people of Hayagay Sharqi. Some 400 villagers banded together to attack five villages in the nearby Doog Darra area that were known Taliban strongholds, said District Coordination Officer Atifur Rehman, Daily Times reported. He said the citizens’ Lashkar has occupied three of the villages since June 6, and was trying to push the Taliban out of the other two. Two fighter planes and a couple of gunship helicopters targeted the positions of the militants, who had occupied hilltops and blocked the Wana-Jandola Road between Tanai and Serwakai towns. Tribal sources told The News from Jandola that troops on June 19-night continued shelling the suspected militants’ positions with artillery guns. They were, however, unaware of the casualties suffered by the militants. Military officials said 32 militants were killed when two warplanes and gunship helicopters bombarded the militants occupying the road between Tanai and Serwakai. They claimed that the Tanai-Serwakai portion of the Wana-Jandola road had been cleared of the militants. The remaining militants affiliated with Baitullah Mehsud were reported to have fled their positions in the area. However, the militants denied any losses in the operation. Tribal sources said the advancing troops from Wana, headquarters of South Waziristan, were facing tough resistance from the militants in efforts to clear the remaining 20-kilometre portion of the road between Serwakai and Jandola. According to the sources, the troops secured the area beyond Tanai to Old Serwakai, New Serwakai and Madejan. A tribal Lashkar (militia) attacked Taliban hideouts in the Kurram Agency on July 2, killing 28 militants and suffering seven fatalities themselves, and the intensifying battles prompted them to ask for Army troops to help, a local lawmaker said, The News reported. The fighting in the remote Kurram region was the latest in two weeks of battles between militants and tribesmen there that have killed 141 people, including more than 100 militants, two Government officials said. Their information could not, however, be independently verified. Sajid Hussain Turi, a lawmaker from Kurram, said the militants were moving into Kurram from the Swat Valley, where the military is undertaking an offensive to neutralize them. He said hundreds of tribesmen took part in the attack early on July 1, triggering a gun battle that killed 28 militants and seven tribal fighters. “Kurram is an important place because the Taliban can cross the Afghan border from here easily,” Turi said, adding that “The Lashkar is facing these armed Taliban, but we request that the government send troops to Kurram to fight the Taliban as quickly as possible.”

Paramilitary troops were on August 2, 2009 deployed in the Azafi Abadi village, also known as Koriaan, in the Punjab province where 10 people were killed in violence between Muslims and Christians over the alleged desecration of the Koran, The Hindu reported. Pakistan Rangers personnel took up positions in and around Azafi Abadi, a day after it witnessed communal clashes. Persons from the two communities reportedly exchanged fire and over 80 homes of Christians were set ablaze by mobs. This is a crime against humanity,” Rana Sanaullah, Law Minister of Punjab, told reporters. He said some outlawed religious groups were involved in the violence but did not name them.

According to sources, members from the CMAS-Bandhugaon were waiting with their traditional arms near Dasini, two kilometers from Bandhugaon, and people from CMAS Narayanpatna stood near Baunsput, five kilometers from Bandhugaon on the road towards Narayanpatna in the same block. The conflict between the two groups arose in connection with the attacks by members of CMAS-Bandhugaon on the houses of the supporters of CMAS,-Narayanpatna in the evening of September 5. Members of the CMAS-Bandhugaon had also abducted about 40 supporters of the CMAS Narayanpatna from Kabiribadi Panchayat (village level local self government institution) and kept them at Sarpali in Bandhugaon block as hostage so as to discuss the issue of limiting their activities across each other’s borders.Earlier, on September 3, the supporters of the Narayanpatna-CMAS had entered Bandhugaon and destroyed 14 lemon grass processing units. They had also forcefully taken over 400 acres of land on which lemon grass had been cultivated. But the CMAS-Bandhugaon activists had alleged that the land taken over by the CMAS-Narayanpatna activists was already taken over by them in the past. It had irked the Bandhugaon group.
