One person was killed and another injured when Security Forces (SFs) opened fire on a suspected car in Sheratala area of North Waziristan Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on January 3, reports Dawn. The driver, who received bullet injuries, and another person in the car were arrested. Officials said that an Army convoy was proceeding from Thall to Spinwam tehsil (revenue unit) in North Waziristan when a car appeared on the road despite curfew. Soldiers opened fire on the car killing Ikram Mehsud on the spot while injured driver Abdul Hussain and Daud, hailing from Karak District of Punjab.

Three civilians, including two officials of the State Agricultural Department were injured when cadres of the Communist Part of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) triggered a landmine blast targeting the vehicle they were traveling near Odiapentha village in Narayanpatna block of Koraput District in the morning of January 11. The victims were Basant Kumar Patnaik and Sashi Bhusan Senapati of the State Agricultural Department and Raj Kumar Dipak, the driver of the vehicle. The incident coincided with the two-day bandh (general shut down) call of the Maoists in Rayagada, Gajapati and Kandhamal Districts, which began on January 10, to protest against the encounter in Rayagada District on January 9, in which nine Maoists had been killed by Security Forces.

At least 20 persons were killed and another 16 injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into Miryan Police Station in the Bannu town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 12, reports Daily Times. The intensity of the blast was so high that it also badly damaged a nearby mosque. “The target was the Police Station and the nearby mosque. Police and paramilitary personnel were praying inside the mosque,” when the bombing took place, Bannu District Police Chief Mohammad Iftikhar said. “There are some civilians also but most of the victims are security personnel,” he added. Claiming the responsibility, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Azam Tariq said it was to avenge US drone strikes in Pakistan’s tribal belt, which borders Afghanistan. “We claim responsibility for this attack. We will continue such attacks unless the drone attacks are stopped,” Azam Tariq added.

Report said that terrorist attacks in Pakistan left 2,542 people dead and 5,062 others injured in 2010. "Target killings" in the country's port city of Karachi saw the death of 237 political activists while in the southwestern province of Balochistan, at least 118 people were killed, the report said. At least 1,159 people, including 1,041 civilians, lost their lives in 67 suicide bomb attacks in the country. During 2010, at least 12,580 people were killed in different incidents, including 791 honour killings. A total of 581 people were kidnapped for ransom. The report, whose statistics were derived largely from media and other undisclosed sources, criticised the government for failing to protect the citizens, especially religious minorities. It said the biggest terrorist incident took place in Lahore at a place of worship place of a religious minority. The attack left 99 members of the Ahmadiyya sect dead.

Sources said that the compound in Shawal tehsil, which lies along the border that separates South and North Waziristan Agency, was run by militants of Hafiz Gul Bahadur, whose loyalists attack in Afghanistan, and was targeted by five US missiles at around 12pm. Shortly afterwards, two more missiles were fired at a vehicle suspected to be carrying militants in a village in South Waziristan about three kilometres away from the site of the first strike.
