Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed that the militants of Ansar-al-Islam/Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) modules arrested in the State were using peer-to-peer encryption for communication, reports Times of India on August 4. "They do not use mobile calls but use chat apps to communicate. Not Telegram, but these chat apps found are unheard of. They are peer-to-peer encrypted chat apps and are more sophisticated and beyond the end-to-end chat apps," CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said. The names of these apps have not been disclosed due to security reasons. Further, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also disclosed that during the novel Coronovairus-19 (Covid-19) years the ABT modules were training cadres in bomb making in Barpeta District, reports Deccan Herald.

On August 5, four insurgents and two collaborators of the Biswamohan faction of the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT-BM) surrendered before the police, reports Indian Express. Assistant Inspector General (law and order) Jyotishman Das Chowdhury identified the four militants as ‘colonel’ Umesh Koloi alias Uklai, ‘warrant officer’ Fanijoy Reang alias Sathukri, ‘lieutenant colonel’ Victor Jamatia alias Halam and Uttam Kishore Jamatia alias Usha. Two collaborators, Surjya Kishore Jamatia from Birganj in Gomati District and Brajendra Reang from Teliamura in Khowai District also surrendered before the Police. The militants deposited one AK-56 rifle with two magazines and 60 live rounds, an M-20 pistol with a magazine and five live rounds, a .38 caliber pistol with a magazine and 15 live rounds.

The crime has created communal tension, the order said. Some anti-social elements are using social media to transmit hate speeches inciting the passions of the public, the order further said. This is the fourth arrest of members of the AQIS, an affiliate of the international terror outfit Al-Qaeda, from the district in a week, Superintendent of Police (SP), V V Rakesh Reddy said. The arrested person has been identified as Hafizur Rahman, a teacher of Kabaitari Ma Arif Madrasa in Bongaigaon and a resident of Goalpara. He was allegedly involved in recruiting youths to the AQIS from the area and also had links with members of ABT, Reddy said.

The charges against the eight arrested people in Assam are that they are members of the ABT, besides waging an Islamic state war conspiracy against the Government of India. Seven of the eight are from Barpeta, and one is from Tripura. Those who were charge sheeted are Saiful Islam, Khairul Islam, Badshah Sulaiman, Naushad Ali, Mamunur Rashid, Imran Hassan, Mukbul Hussain and Mufti Sulaiman.
