On June 1, around 14 militants of United Tribal Liberation Army-James (UTLA-J) including its ‘chairman’ Tonthang Singsit surrendered at 1st Manipur Rifles Banquet Hall in Imphal of Imphal West in Manipur, reports East Mojo. The surrendered militants also laid down two KH-33 rifles, one AK rifle, one A1 rifle, one A2 rifle, three single barrel rifles and three small arms along with one Chinese hand grenade, 18 gelatin sticks, 18 detonators, and assorted ammunition. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren, speaking on the occasion of surrender, said, ‘The youth who had gone on the wrong path because of family frustrations and other reasons should come home. As the Union Home Minister Amit Shah had assured, no actions will be contemplated against those former insurgents against whom there are no serious charges pending’.

Five militants belonging to People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak-Red Army (PREPAK-RA) were arrested from Longkey Makangtong area of Changlang District in Arunachal Pradesh, reports East Mojo on June 6. According to District Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mihin Gambo, a joint operation with the Assam Rifles was launched in the Longkey Makangtong area on June 3 and in the next two days, the five militants hailing from Manipur were arrested after they sneaked in from Myanmar.

Assam Police Special Branch ADGP Hiren Nath on June 4, said Police have also found evidence that Popular Front of India (PFI) has closed ties with Bangladesh-based terror group Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), reports nenow.in. Assam Police has registered 16 cases against PFI and two cases against its student wing Campus Front of India (CFI). Also, a charge sheet has been filed in 12 cases while the investigation is underway for the remaining cases. “On April 15, we registered a case in Barpeta district in which some (16) ABT activists were arrested. One of them was Maqibul Hussain. During the interrogation, Hussain acknowledged that he was the president of PFI of Barpeta district,” Nath said. “Before joining Ansarullah Bangla Team he was actively working for PFI in the lower Assam, but later resigned to join the said group where he was trained by Mehdi Hasan,” he said. Ansarullah Bangla Team is a terror outfit, inspired by Al-Qaeda, and based in Bangladesh.

On June 5, an improvised explosive device (IED) took place at the gate of Little Flower School, Sangaiprou under Lamphel Police Station (PS) in Imphal West District of Manipur. Though no casualties were reported, but a portion of the gate was damaged by splinters. At the blast site, vehicle parts and remnants of a burnt twine used to bind the safety fuse was recovered. Following this incident, students and faculties of the school conducted a protest demonstration in front of Little Flower School on June 6 and demanded a violence free education zone. The Catholic Educational Society Manipur (CESM) executives and Archbishop House Curia condemning the incident has decided to close all educational institutions run by the Catholic Mission in the state on June 7.

On June 6, a National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) militant was arrested for involvement in a series of IED blasts, including the June 5 IED attack at Little Flower School from Kangla Sangomshang area in Imphal East District of Manipur, reports Imphal Free Press. The arrested militant identified as Thounaojam Rishi Luwangcha was apprehended along with a jar marked as ‘Mahaan Instant Dairy Creamer’ during a cordon and search operation. One detonator fitted on a Cordtex wire of approximately 1 feet in length, 58 Plastic Explosive Kirkee (PEK) sticks weighing around 7.358 kg, 3 coils of Cordtex wire with approximately 51 feet in length, 397 detonators in boxes and 2 batteries were found inside the jar. Upon further search of his house, some mechanical tools used in assembling the explosive substances including one soldering iron rod; one bolt cutter (wire plier); one ratchet wire stripper; one cutter blade; 18 small iron rods and one electric insulating tape were recovered. Rishi further disclosed that he was behind the series of bomb blasts in Imphal - one shop at Nagamapal on May 5; at one house located at Khurai Thoidingjam Leikai on May 6 and the recent blast at Little flower school gate on June 5. The explosive substances were handed over to him by his commander through one unknown person in the month of January, 2022 and was paid INR 30,000 for each bomb blast.

According to UMHA note, ULFA-I has intensified its kidnapping activities in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The banned outfit has also intensified its recruitment drive by roping in youths from Assam and other parts of the country including Delhi and NCR region. The youths hailing from Assam are being targeted by ULFA-I for its recruitment and later these freshly recruited militants are being then sent to the Myanmar-based camp of the outfit for training. The two militants identified as Yengkhom Somendro Singh and Ngathem Boby Singh alias Naobi revealed during interrogation that they had joined the outfit in 2010 and were working under the command of Ibochouba. On the instruction of Ibochouba, the duo recruited Keisham Nilachandra Singh in 2010 and handed him over to an unknown person.

Six persons were arrested along with a massive stockpile of drugs worth INR 1,00,00,000 from East Jaintia Hills District and East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya on June 30, reports Northeast Today. Two offenders identified as Garry Kharnaior and Kmenlang Shabong were arrested from Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills District along with 30 strips of Nitrasepam Tablets along with two bags of heroin, concealed in 60 soap cases, which were wrapped in black polythene. Based on their interrogation, Marvin Jyrwa, the key financer of narcotics trade and his three associates- Meibifil Buam, Khrawboklang Kharkongor, Aiborlang Laitmon were arrested from Mawryngkneng in East Khasi Hills District.

On June 30, Kuki Liberation Organization/Kuki Liberation Army (KLO/KLA) ‘suspended’ one of its cadres identified as Lhungthanglen alias Lelen Kuki for his alleged involvement in a drug trafficking case, reports The Sangai Express. The militant outfit which is presently under Suspension of Operation (SoO) stated that the activity of Kuki was against the outfit’s principles and policies for his personal gain. The suspension will be effective from June 30, 2022 until further notice. The armed group applauded the endeavor of the law enforcing agencies in fighting anti-social elements and arresting them, while it also openly declared their support for the Chief Minister’s War on Drugs.
