INR 47 lakh, one laptop, one printer, one digital camera and several incriminating documents were recovered from his possession. Elsewhere in the city, three militants and a linkman belonging to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) were arrested from a hideout at Fancy Bazaar on the same day. They were identified as Yumlembam Malam alias Ibotomba alias Keirangba, Yumlembam Bung alias Ratan alias Malem alias Malengbam, Nongmaithem Amuba alias Nelso, and Nongmaithem Norendra Sinha.

Two of the slain militants were identified as the ‘second lieutenant 709th battalion’ Chanakya Barman alias Khaplang and Pranab Kalita alias Jogesh Kalita alias Bastab. One .30 pistol, four grenades, ten metres of fuse wire, empty cartridges of AK-47 Rifles, an electric plug board, explosive materials and a mobile handset were recovered from their possession.

United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) 27th Battalion Commander identified as 'lieutenant' Bipul Choudhury was killed in an encounter with the Army personnel of 11th J&K Rifles at Sunpurena in central Assam's Karbi Anglong district, Times of India reports. Police said that the explosives used by the ULFA were provided by the Pakistani agency and there are reasons to believe that the militants were triggering off blasts at the behest of foreign powers. Sources added that at least 20 ULFA militants were trained in Pakistan to handle sophisticated explosive devices. Seven of them, who received training were either killed or arrested. The ULFA triggered off 32 blasts in different parts of the state this year while the police managed to recover 66 bombs.

He informed that "In 1960, around 10 per cent of the total population in Guwahati were Hindi-speaking labourers. However, the current percentage of Hindi-speaking labourer population has gone down to mere 8 per cent, where it should have been increased." The violence triggered by the ULFA against the Hindi speaking migrants has forced them to flee.

One cadre of the Black Widow, a breakaway faction of the Dima Halim Daogah (DHD), identified as ‘Sergeant’ Gale, was killed in an encounter with the security forces (SFs) at Hatikhali near Maibong area in the North Cachar hill district on May 30, reports Telegraph. The slain militant was leading a five-member team that tried to ambush a patrol squad along the Maibong-Diklem road. According to Telegraph, police submitted a report to the Assam Governor mentioning names of the four affluent businessmen and some professionals suspected to be ardent sympathisers and helpers of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA). Official sources said that they were suspected to have acted as ULFA conduits or ‘rendered their services’ to the outfit. The police also found “substantial evidence” of ULFA’s link with the Pakistani external intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and some fundamentalist organisations.

The level of violence in Assam has increased considerably in the last three years primarily due to violence perpetrated by the ULFA, reports Assam Tribune. According to security agencies, the number of such incidents is increasing gradually in the last three years. The outfit triggered off more than 50 bomb and grenade blasts in different parts of the State. In 2005, only 19 civilians, three security force (SF) personnel and 10 militants were killed. In 2006, the violence increased with more than 160 incidents of violence, in which more than 80 civilians, 14 SF personnel and six ULFA militants were killed. In 2007 (till date), more than 100 civilians were killed and 280 were injured. Three SF personnel and five ULFA militants were also killed in encounters this year. The level of violence involving the Karbi Longri N.C. Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) and Black Widow group, a breakaway faction of the Dima Halim Daoga (DHD), in the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills also showed an upward trend. According to records available, the Black Widow group was involved in 10 acts of violence last year and it increased to 17 so far this year. The KLNLF militants were involved in more than 10 major acts of violence so far in 2007.
