Jharkhand Police are fighting the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and other Left-Wing Extremist (LWE) groups without adequate personnel to gather intelligence inputs, reports The Times of India on June 5. The Department's Special Branch, the Central Intelligence Wing, does not have enough manpower to monitor movement of the Maoists. The Special Branch has over 1,250 vacant posts (2500 total strength) across board, including the crucial posts of Sub-Inspectors who gather intelligence on the ground. The posts of Inspector General (IG), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and Superintendent of Police (SP) (establishment), in the Special Branch are vacant for a long time. "The vacancy at the crucial posts definitely takes a toll on the efficiency of the branch. A few officers are doing the job of many," Additional Director General (ADG), operations and Police Spokesperson S.N. Pradhan said.

Meanwhile, the Ranchi District Police on June 9 beefed up the security of Ranchi archbishop Telesphore Placidus Toppo of the Roman Catholic Church following a threat letter he got from People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) seeking INR 50 million as extortion, failing which he would be killed, reports The Times of India. A self-styled PLFI ‘zonal commander’ of Jharkhand West Bengal region, Raj Kujur, sent the letter to the Cardinal house with a deadline of 15 days for the payment. The letter said "You have made moolah by spreading religion (evangelicalism), which is why you should give some cut to the organization. The Police can do us no damage. The Police do not have the capacity to arrest our men. If you do not pay, you will be killed."

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) has claimed in a letter, sent to a vernacular daily in Jharkhand State capital Ranchi, that the June 9, 2015 Palamu District encounter in which 11 'active Maoist cadres' and a ‘zonal commander’ were killed is fake, reports The Times of India on June 12. In the letter, the CPI-Maoist Spokesperson Gopalji claimed that the cadres killed belonged to the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a CPI-Maoist splinter group. However, rejecting the Maoist charges, State Police Spokesperson S.N. Pradhan said "All those killed were carrying firearms and travelling with most wanted Doctorji. It is the old habit of the Maoists to make false claims to show Police in poor light. Any source we use in operations, Maoists call them JJMP."
