According to Daily Times, the Northern Areas administration had decided to close all Government schools in the Gilgit and Skardu districts for an indefinite period amidst strikes initiated by the Shia community over the controversial syllabi in educational institutions. While June 1 was reportedly the second day of the strike, the administration said that all Government schools in both districts, where the community was predominantly Shia, would remain closed till further orders. Earlier, the Shia cleric Syed Agha Ziauddin Rizvi had allegedly warned that they would agitate in the whole Northern Areas region. At least 300 Shia students in Gilgit are reported to have erected hurdles on roads forcing shopkeepers to close their shops. A clash between Shia and Sunni students was also reported in the city after the former forcibly closed a school.

Leaders of different religious sects in the capital Islamabad are reported to have asked the district administration and police to provide them with security. Consequent to the assassination of pro-Taliban Sunni cleric and chief of the Binoria mosque in Karachi, Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai, in Karachi on May 30 and rising sectarian violence in the country, religious leaders demanded the local government make security arrangements for them during a meeting on June 1 with Chief Commissioner of Islamabad Junaid Iqbal and other high-ranking district and police officers, reported the Daily Times. These leaders told Iqbal that they had received several threatening phone calls from unidentified callers. Those who attended the meeting included Ghazi Abdul Rasheed, Nazir Farroqi, Qazi Abdul Rasheed, Maulana Ashraf Ali, Allama Tanveer Abbas, Sabtain Rizvi and Allama Zohair Shah.

The United States has said that so far there is no evidence to suggest that the Al Qaeda was involved in the recent violence in Karachi. "As far as who's behind it and Al Qaeda involvement, I don't think we really have any information like that," US State Department spokesperson Richard Boucher told a briefing in Washington on June 2. "There are local organizations and leaders that have been promoting the violence or the demonstrations," he added. The United States, he said, was concerned 'about the violence aspect' of the situation in Karachi but 'not the political aspect of that'.

One person was reportedly killed and several others sustained injuries when Shia protestors clashed with troops in the Gilgit city on June 3 during a curfew that was imposed in the city’s municipal limits. According to Daily Times, while the protestor was killed near Khomer Chowk, clashes and arson were reported from all over the district and a Pakistan Radio van and transmitter, Danyore Police Station, Police Training Centre, the Gilgit Deputy Commissioner’s office, a rest house and the Northern Areas Legislative Council hall were damaged by angry mobs. The army was called out in Gilgit to maintain law and order after Shia leader Agha Ziauddin Rizvi set June 3 as the deadline for the administration to resolve the issue regarding the existing school syllabi that Shia leaders had said was against their faith. Mobs are also reported to have damaged a motel in Hunza and set fire to the Hunza Assistant Commissioner’s office and Aliabad Police Station. Thousands of Shia protestors from Nomal, Danyore, Jalalabad, Matumdas, Jutal, Jaglote, Guru, Bagrote, Nagar and Hunza tried to enter Gilgit city, but troops stopped them at several entrances to the city, reported the Daily Times.

The Northern Areas administration has sought the Army’s assistance in dealing with possible sectarian violence after the deadline given by Shia leaders over "un-Islamic content in the syllabi", reports the Daily Times. Shia leader Agha Ziauddin Rizvi has given a deadline for the final settlement of the issue on June 3, today. The Army reportedly commenced patrolling in Gilgit since May 31. Shia leaders said the syllabi issue has "been simmering since May 30 and for the past four years, they have been unable to get their changes implemented, so they were forced to use all means to record their protests."

The outlawed Sunni group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) is reported to be the prime suspect in a suicide attack on a Shia mosque in Karachi that killed at least 24 people on May 31. Police have suspected the suicide bomber belonged to the LeJ, said senior investigating officer Gul Hasan Sammo. "Lashkar is our main suspect as it made similar attacks on Shias in the past," he said. Sammo also said the May 31 attack had some similarities to a May 7-suicide bomb attack on another Shia mosque in Karachi that killed 24 worshippers. The LeJ is alleged to have carried out that attack too.

One person was shot dead while 19 others, including 12 police personnel, were wounded on June 4 in separate incidents of violence in Karachi during the strike observed on a call given by the Islamist alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) against the May 30-assassination of Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai. The strike is reported to have paralysed normal life in the city as almost all forms of public transport remained off road and major commercial centres were closed. While the strike was largely peaceful, violence was reported from some localities, including Pirabad, where six persons were injured when police opened fire on the protesters. Protesters also set ablaze two vehicles at Liaquatabad and Banaras Chowk. In a suspected sectarian incident, unidentified gunmen shot dead a Shia lady doctor, identified as Suraiya Nisar, and wounded another person in Dera Ghazi Khan on June 6. Suraiya was shot dead as she came out of an operating theatre in the Al-Zohra Hospital, said local police chief Muhammad Usman. "We have no enmity, we have friendly relations with people of all sects. I am confident that it was a sectarian killing," her brother, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain, was quoted in The News. Local Shia leader Syed Nadeem Haider told reporters that "We believe it is a sectarian killing because Doctor Suraiya Nisar’s family was on the hit list of terrorists since long and they received threats in the past."

"We have helicopter gun-ships, artillery, missiles, everything else that is required for such an operation. I cannot go into operational details but I must add that our own intelligence and weapons enabled us to achieve this significant hit," claimed Sultan.

President Pervez Musharraf has indicated in an interview to the British Sunday Telegraph that recent military operations in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) could lead to retaliatory terrorist acts elsewhere in Pakistan. According to him, "… it can have a fallout, these people have contacts elsewhere in the country and they can retaliate in the rest of the country in the form of bomb blasts, attacks on important persons and installations, and so we have to guard against that." On the Kashmir issue, he said that Pakistan’s stand on a plebiscite demand in the Valley was unchanged. He also said that confidence-building measures and peace process would prove a futile exercise if there was no forward movement on the Kashmir issue. "The peace process is Kashmir. We are not fighting on the Wular dams and Sri Creek," said the President.

Pakistan on June 23 rejected the report of the 9/11 commission on terrorist attacks in the United States, saying there was no truth in the allegations that Islamabad helped the Taliban regime in Afghanistan to shelter the Al Qaeda. "We think the 9/11 commission is biased, partial and completely unscientific," said Foreign Office spokesperson Masood Khan while addressing a weekly press briefing in Islamabad. "The commission has chosen to interpret history very selectively," he added. The report said, "The Taliban’s ability to provide bin Laden a haven in the face of international pressure and UN sanctions was significantly facilitated by Pakistani support." However, the spokesman added, "We did have ties with Taliban regime in Kabul and we had relations earlier, with Mujahideen but we had nothing to do with Al-Qaeda."

The US House of Representatives is reported to have has passed a legislation that requires the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to report annually to the Congress on Pakistan's nuclear activities. Sponsored by US Representative Gary Ackerman, the legislation has been adopted by a voice vote as an amendment to the Intelligence Authorisation Act, according to Statesman. A similar bill has to be approved by the Senate before it can become law. Responding to the Bush administration's request for a five-year $3 billion aid package to Pakistan for its continued co-operation in the war on terrorism, Ackerman's amendment mandates an annual classified report for lawmakers to be produced in each of those five years detailing the degree to which Pakistan is supporting or subverting US anti-proliferation, democratisation and counter-terrorism goals. During a debate on the amendment, Ackerman said that ever since President Bush proposed more aid, "the media has been filled with reports of AQ Khan's nuclear network where, it turns out, 2/3 of the axis of evil got their nuclear technology and that Khan's agents tried to sell it the other 1/3."
