The Crime Investigation Department's (CID) Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) on December 1 recovered bombs and other explosives in a raid on militants' hideout in Mominabad area of Orangi Town in Karachi on December 1, reported The Express Tribune. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ali Raza, who heads the AEC, said that the raid was conducted on the basis of information they received about the presence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He added that the militants were plotting attacks in the city and were in possession of explosive materials and bombs. CID officials said that there was heavy firing from both sides and the militants managed to escape. Initial reports suggest that around 100 kilograms of explosive material was recovered from the hideout along with three suicide jackets which were ready to be used, one bottle bomb, three hand grenades, 18 packet bombs, one Kalashnikov, 30 detonators, wires, six batteries, 13 cell phones, three remote controls, two vehicles with government number plates, three pistols, six uniforms belonging to security forces, including the Police.

States (US) authorities on December 2 agreed to step up air strikes, including drone attacks, on Pakistani militants sheltering across the border in Afghanistan, reports The Express Tribune. According to sources, in their meetings with US and Afghan officials, Pakistani officials repeatedly raised the issue of Taliban militants using the northeastern Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan as a launching pad for attacks on its Security Forces in the border regions. Pakistan demanded action against these militants as they have carried out a number of cross-border attacks in Pakistan’s border areas of Dir and Chitral Districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province and Bajaur and Mohmand Agencies of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The sources further added that the Afghan President Dr Ashraf Ghani, who visited Islamabad from November 14-15, was also shown documentary proof of activities of Pakistani militants on Afghan soil. They say that fugitive Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah and his loyalists have been sheltering across the border in Afghanistan after they were routed from Swat in a military operation in 2009. Sources said that US authorities have finally realised the gravity of the situation and started a hunt for three top Pakistani militant commanders, Mullah Fazlullah, Maulvi Faqir Muhammad and Mangal Bagh Afridi. Maulvi Faqir is said to be in custody of the Afghan government, while Mullah Fazlullah and Mangal Bagh freely roam around in Afghanistan and mastermind terrorist attacks in Pakistan.

According to officials, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants holed up in Afghanistan are being squeezed by United States (US) drone strikes and a revolt against them, a trend that could disrupt the insurgents’ capability to strike in Pakistan, reports Daily Times on December 5 (today). For years, TTP 'commanders' fighting the Pakistani state have been hiding in remote areas of east Afghanistan, plotting attacks and recruiting. But in recent weeks, officials say the insurgency has been weakened by a spate strikes by US drones and a rebellion by tribesmen in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province. The Pakistani and Afghan Taliban are allied and share the goal of toppling their respective Governments and setting up an Islamic state across the region. Four TTP 'commanders' told media that drone strikes and tension with tribesmen had forced them to move from small Afghan towns to mountainous border areas. Two of them said they narrowly missed being hit by US drones last month, adds The Express Tribune.

The Afghanistan Government has delivered three senior Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘commanders’ including Latifullah Mehsud to Pakistan, The News reported on December 7. “Yes, it’s true. Afghanistan finally delivered these three hardcore terrorists to us. The ISAF had seized them last year when they were coming out of a safe-house of the National Directorate of Security in Afghanistan,” said a senior Pakistani military official who wished not to be named as he was not authorised to talk to the media on the issue. Latifullah Mehsud was deputy to Hakimullah Mehsud. Military officials said two other TTP commanders, Arafat and Jaffar, have also been delivered to Pakistan. “After they were delivered to us, three of them were airlifted in a military helicopter to a safe location for interrogation,” the military official said. He termed it a major development and said it was a sign of the “improving” relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

National Security Committee Secretary Muhammad Sadiq during the concluding session of a two-day conference on ‘Flashpoints of the South Asian security – A review of political and security architecture in the Subcontinent' on December 9 while referring to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS/ also known as Islamic State-IS / Daish) said, “It would be dishonest to say Daish is not a threat, knowing the contacts between it and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Afghan Taliban,” reports Dawn. He further said, “Daish has not challenged the security scene here, but sees this region as a potential recruitment ground,” adding “With the weakening of TTP after operations in North Waziristan and Khyber Agency and displacement of Haqqanis many foot soldiers of terrorism would be looking for new leadership and resources and Daish is a natural source of attraction for them.” Moreover, he said, anti-Shia forces were attracted towards Daish, which was viewed as an effective player that could counter their influence in South Asia.

States (US) officials believe that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) must also be using drug money to finance their activities, reported Dawn on December 9 (today). “The logic is rather overwhelming. Drug traffickers have a substantial presence in the region where the Taliban also operate,” said a senior US official, adding, “They cannot move through that area without support from the Taliban.” Ambassador William R. Brownfield, Assistant Secretary of State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, is leading this delegation While US officials see logical evidence for TTP’s involvement in the drug trade, they say that so far they have not seen any evidence to suggest that madrassa's are also being used for this purpose. “The truth is we cannot say if they do. We also cannot say if every single madrassa is linked to them or is absolutely clean,” said an official. The official pointed out that while Khost, the Afghan province bordering North Waziristan, was poppy-free, “there is a tremendous amount of overlap of Taliban and opium poppy cultivation.” The official noted that the drug trade was the single biggest revenue maker for Taliban, which was a direct problem for Pakistan. “Obviously, TTP is earning revenue, when an illicit drug moves through their areas. We are almost 100 per cent certain that they are,” the official added.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on December 11 criticised Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, saying the teenage activist has entered into an agreement with “satanic forces” to promote Western culture and destroy Pakistan, reports The News. In its first reaction after the 17-year-old peace activist was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Wednesday, TTP ‘spokesman’ Muhammad Khurasani said in a statement that the award was given to her to “promote Western culture and not education”. He also criticised Malala’s father, Ziauddin, for working against Islam and said he was using his daughter against the religion and Islamic society. Khurasani said both the father and the daughter have entered into an agreement with the “Western satanic forces” to destroy Pakistan and Pashtun society. The TTP spokesman lashed out at the democratic system and termed it “worse than worst systems ever witnessed by the world”. He said democracy was responsible for all the worries and anxieties faced by the world.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in a threatening letter on December 19 warned the Federal Government that it will start eliminating children of politicians, including Sharif's family, and Army officers, if the Pakistan Government keeps its commitment to hang militants owing allegiance to the terror outfit, reports The Times of India. The letter was received by Pakistan authorities on December 19, 2014. Sources said that they were trying to verify if the letter was genuine. The letter justified the killing of young children saying the kids were committed to following in the footsteps of their parents. The letter says that if any incarcerated terrorist is killed, TTP will take revenge by killing more young children. "Let us make it clear to Pakistan establishment that if any of our associates is harmed, we will avenge ourselves by targeting your children. We would ensure that houses of army generals and political leaders become centers of mourning," said the letter. It further read, "Why the human rights organizations, which are not aware of the reasons of the attack on Army Public School, silent on this decision of the infidel Government. We, in light of Islamic teaching, consider the killing of the children of army personnel as justified as they are not opposing the anti-Islam role of their parents and are committed to follow the path of their parents. We are giving an open invitation of debate to religion leaders who are issuing decrees in favor of the Government."

Umar Mansoor, a key Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander and a close aid of Mullah Fazlullah was the mastermind of December 16 militants’ attack on Peshawar Army Public School, The Express Tribune reports on December 20. A video posted on December 18 on a website used by the TTP shows a man with a luxuriant chest-length beard, holding an admonishing finger aloft as he seeks to justify the December 16 attack. The caption identified him as Umar Mansoor. “If our women and children die as martyrs, your children will not escape,” he said. “We will fight against you in such a style that you attack us and we will take revenge on innocents.” Six TTP cadres interviewed by Reuters confirmed that the mastermind was Mansoor who is close to TTP ‘chief’ Mullah Fazlullah. “He strictly follows the principles of jihad,” one said. “He is strict in principles, but very kind to his juniors. He is popular among the juniors because of his bravery and boldness.” Mansoor got a high school education in the capital, Islamabad, two TTP members said, and later studied in a madrassah. “Umar Mansoor had a tough mind from a very young age, he was always in fights with other boys,” said one TTP cadre. Mansoor has two brothers and spent some time working in the city of Karachi as a labourer before joining the Taliban soon after it was formed, in late 2007, said one commander. His nickname is “nary,” a word in the Pashto language meaning “slim”, and he is the father of two daughters and a son, said another commander. “(Mansoor) likes to play volleyball,” said one of the Taliban members. “He is a good volleyball player. Wherever he shifts his office, he puts a volleyball net up.” The Taliban video describes him as the “amir”, or leader, of Peshawar and nearby Darra Adam Khel. Mansoor deeply opposes talks with the Government, the commanders said. “He was very strict from the start when he joined,” a commander said. “He left many commanders behind if they had a soft corner (of their heart) for the government.”

The spokesman for al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), Usama Mahmood, on December 21 released a statement condemning the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar, reports Daily Times. AQIS’ four-page statement was released on Mahmood’s official Twitter feed. In an accompanying tweet, Mahmood writes that the “massacre of innocent children” makes “our hearts burst!” Mahmood stresses in the statement that al Qaeda only learned of the attack through the media, and his statement is based on the assumption that those reports are accurate. In particular, Mahmood says, it is al Qaeda’s understands that the attackers targeted children on purpose and that most of the victims were children. Mahmood argues that al Qaeda carefully selects its targets inside Pakistan “so as to avoid unnecessary civilian casualties”. He said that the group focuses on “American targets,” the “puppet rulers” in Pakistan, and America’s “mercenaries” in the Pakistani security and intelligence services. In harsh terms, Mahmood condemns the TTP’s attack as “un-Islamic” and says that al Qaeda’s scholars have already set forth the rules for engaging the enemy, which were not followed in Peshawar. The attack violates the jihadis’ version of Sharia law, Mahmood claims. Mahmood also portrays al Qaeda as the defender of Muslims inside Pakistan. Addressing “our beloved Pakistani Muslims,” Mahmood says their defense is “our responsibility”.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) released a new video accusing the Pakistani Army of attacking the 'Mujahideen' (holy warrior) even after using them for "blood game" and "proxy war" in Jammu and Kashmir in the name of "so-called freedom" and in Afghanistan, reported The Economic Times on December 28. The video purportedly of its senior 'commander' Adnan Rashid, calls upon the soldiers of Pakistani Army to join the TTP listing the atrocities committed by force including "killing of millions" and "raping of own sisters" during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. In his little over 15-minute long video released before December 25, 2014, Rashid accuses Pakistan Army officers, the "Brahmins" of the force, of treating their juniors as "Shudras". Rashid, in what appears to be British-accented English, says in the video released by TTP's media wing 'Umar Media' that, "you may remember when people from tribal areas fought for you the war of 1948 and liberated for you the Azad Jammu and Kashmir". "You remember when thousands of Pakistani youth fought your proxy war in Afghanistan and in Indian Kashmir...." He then asks what the Pakistani Army has given in return and cites numerous examples of "ungratefulness" including killing of "thousands of your Baloch brothers". "And then you went into the dollar game and you earned millions from the proxy war in Afghanistan and you deceived the nation in the name of jihad. The Muslims have not forgotten the blood game you played in Indian Kashmir exploiting youth in the name of so called freedom," he said. He accused the Pakistani Army of taking a "U-turn" and labeling jihad as terrorism and Mujahideen as terrorists. He also announced a "general amnesty" for all those Pakistani soldiers wanting to join the TTP.
