A press release issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police stated that the Government had blacklisted Jama'atul Muslimeen soon after its activities came to the notice of law enforcers in 2005. Jama'atul Muslimeen is the first organisation in Bangladesh that followed the ideology of Al-Qaeda, the press release said. Dhaka Tribune adds that Jama'atul Muslimeen created a network in English medium schools to build up a reservoir of potential recruits. Rizwan purchased the school in 2006. Around 2am, Police went up to the third floor, and knocked on the door of a flat, asking the suspected militants to open the door. As part of its plan, the outfit joined hands with a robbery gang more than one and a half years ago. It supplied arms to robbers and took 30 percent of looted money in return, said Abdul Baten, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch of DMP. Abdul Baten was speaking at a press briefing at the DMP media centre, hours after the arrests of two HUJI-B leaders (‘Hafiz’ alias ‘Khalid’ and Mamunur Rashid alias Bachchu Molla) and 12 members of the robbery gang in the capital's Jatrabari and Rampura areas on March 3. Police also recovered an AK-22 rifle, two pistols, 10 kg gun powder, Bangladesh Taka 3.5 lakh and some local sharp weapons and equipment from their possession. “The gang has so far amassed around Bangladesh Taka 5 core by committing at least nine robberies in different districts. The militant outfit took 30 percent of the money,” Baten said.The HUJI-B also uses the looted money for collecting arms and ammunition, fighting legal battles in courts for its leaders and supporting the families of HUJI-B men now in jail, according to DMP sleuths.

Police said that they arrested Tehzeeb Karim, former teacher of Lakehead Grammar School and Yasin Mohammad Abdus Samad Talukder, a British-Bangladeshi, on May 17 from in front of Gausul Azam Mosque in Banani. Family members, however, alleged that Tehzeeb went traceless from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his return from Bangkok in the afternoon of May 17, 2016. Similarly, Yasin's family alleged that some people claiming to be law enforcers picked up Yasin from Kakoli bus stand on July 14, 2016. Police said that the direct patronisation of the two accused led to the formation of Jama'atul Muslemin, a militant organisation which follows the ideology of al Qaeda, for the first time in Bangladesh. The two formed an NGO, the Research Centre for Unity Development, through which they used to recruit members and expedite the militant activities of Jama'atul Muslemin.

On September 23, a militant den of Neo-Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) was raided in Sehachar area of Fatullahat at Narayanganj District of Dhaka Division in which two men Farid Uddin Rumee and Mishuk Khan Mizan having ties with Neo-JMB were arrested, reports Dhaka Tribune. Two toy AK-74 type rifles, a toy pistol, three active Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), a huge cache of bomb making material and several mobile phones were recovered from there. The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) on September 25 arrested two cadres of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) from Jatrabari area of Dhaka city in Dhaka District of Dhaka Division, reports The Daily Star. The arrestees are Awal Newaz (38) and Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury (18). To dodge the law enforcers, members of ABT are converting their funds to Bitcoin and planning to use the cryptocurrency in the dark web to buy firearms and narcotics, CTTC officials said. They use messengers like “Telegram” and “WhatsApp” to make their communication secure, counterterrorism officials told, adding that the outfit collects funds through different mobile banking services. Later, they convert their funds to dollars and use it to buy Bitcoins, the officials said, adding that a five-member “cell” of ABT was controlling the whole process. Cryptocurrency is a type of money that is completely virtual. One can use it like an online version of cash to buy products and services, though some countries have banned it altogether.
