Speaking to the media, the district police chief said, on a tip-off, police stopped a jeep carrying the explosive material near Anantpur town and arrested two persons, while six others escaped. Approximately 4,400 gelatine sticks, 8,300 electric detonators and 6,500 detonators were seized from the jeep.

Media reports said the inmates closed all doors and were hiding to save their lives. Sunitha, daughter of the police personnel, suffered injuries. Later, police recovered 12 bullets from the spot. Police sources said the police personnel, Pentaiah, was on the hit list of Naxalites and they opened fire on his house to eliminate all the family members.

Security forces, during combing operation, seized explosives from a left-wing extremist—Naxalite—camp near Katigiguda, Gudari police statio-limits, Rayagada district, on January 15. However, the Naxalites managed to escape. Two light pistols, four cartridges, 23 detonators with live wire, a grenade, hand bombs, explosive materials packed in a carriage, military uniforms and pamphlets were seized from the spot. Official sources said Naxalites had planned a series of explosions in Rayagada district using these devices. Although police have yet not identified the Naxalite group, the presence of Naxalites of the People’s War Group (PWG) from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh is not ruled out.

Police unearthed an arms dump of the left-wing extremist—Naxalite—People’s War Group (PWG) in Kukkamadugu forest, Kothuaguda mandal (administrative unit), Warangal district, on January 20. Based on information provided by Pandava local guerrilla squad (LGS) ‘commander’, who surrendered recently, a search was conducted and a tractor load (some 12 quintals) of gelatin sticks and eight grenades stored in an RCC dump were recovered in the deep forests. Andhra Pradesh police unearthed an arms dump belonging to left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) in the forest near Kharji village, Nennela mandal (administrative unit), Adilabad district, on January 29. On a tip off that the Naxalites had hidden their weapons near Kharji village, a police team took up combing operations in the forest area and unearthed arms and ammunition belonging to local guerrilla squad (LGS) of Jaipur, Sirpur and Kotapalli. Police also recovered diaries containing vital information, photographs of dalam (squad) ‘commanders’ maps of the Bellampalli coal belt area and extremist literature. Police sources said the diaries contained details of the villagers supporting the Naxalites, the decisions taken at the PWG meetings and other vital information about the Naxalites.

There was some confusion over the identity of the dead CCM. Reports said he bears the alias Chandranna and could be either be Pullur Prasad Rao or Sande Rajamouli. Both carry a head money of INR.12 lakh. The correct identity of the CCM was not known, when reports last came in. In all, four Naxalites were killed in the exchange of fire. The other three are Sudarshan, Ravinder alias Madavi Rao and Bharat alias Pendra Bujji Rao. Also, five weapons and four kit bags were recovered from the encounter-site. State Director General of Police Peravaram Ramulu and other police officials visited the spot later in the day.

Three Naxalites were shot dead in an encounter with the police in Vathalur forest area near Tippayapalle village. Police in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand unearthed a grenade factory and recovered an unspecified quantity of grenades and three Japanese wireless sets at Jhumra Pahad (hillock). The factory was suspected of supplying explosives to the banned Naxalites outfits in Orrisa, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and to the Nepalese Maoists, through road and rail routes since 1996, police sources said.
