Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and a group of Maoists exchanged fire in Biriguda forest under Boipariguda Police Station limits in Koraput District on January 1, reports The New Indian Express. BSF officials said based on intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of Maoists in the forest, an operation was launched and Maoists were spotted. The exchange of fire continued for one hour. However, the Maoists managed to escape into deep forest and during search of the area; Police recovered two INSAS rifles and explosives. Police also claimed that two Maoists were injured in the exchange of fire.

Police on February 1 claimed to have arrested a senior Communist Party of India- Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader close to central committee member Ramakrishna and who is allegedly involved in several attacks, including last year’s ambush on a Border Security Force (BSF) convoy in which four personnel were killed, reports Indian Express. Police said Chandu alias Tella Anil Kumar (40), a member of the Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal Committee and intelligence-in-charge for Malkangiri Division, Koraput-Srikakulam Division and East-Visakha Division, was caught along with other Maoists while camping in Tala Paniki forest area in Koraput District. Explosive materials, detonators, wires, Maoist literature and a fake driving license were recovered from them.

Acting on a tip off, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Special Task Force (STF) jointly raided a hideout and arrested the Maoists duo, identified as Manoj Kumar Agrawal alias Agrawal ji, and Baitha, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Operation, Sanjay Singh said. Two country-made pistols, two live ammunition, two mobile phones, a detonator and Maoist literature were recovered from the arrested ultras' possession, the ASP said, adding that both were wanted in about half a dozen cases of Maoist violence.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was shot dead in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) at Pathakchak village under Sikandara Police Station in Jamui District of Bihar on January 5, reports The Times of India. Superintendent of Police (SP) Jitendra Rana said that the SFs comprising the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the District Police shot dead the Maoist during an encounter, who was yet to be identified. The SFs had launched a search operation in the village after being tipped off about gathering of the Maoists who fired on the forces prompting retaliation by the men in uniform. The remaining Maoists managed to flee in the deep forest, Rana said, adding several weapons were seized from the spot. The body has been brought to the District headquarters for autopsy.

A ‘sub zonal’ commander and three other cadres of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee (JPC) were arrested on January 7 and remanded in judicial custody on January 8, reports The Times of India. All four of them were dressed in camouflage uniform when Police got hold of them at Dulsulma village. Police recovered two country-made weapons and 17 sim cards along with five cell phones from them. Five other uniforms were recovered from beneath a banana shaft. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ajay Kumar identified the four as Rang Bahadur Singh, sub zonal commander, Nand Deo Prasad, Indradeo Singh and Sanjay Singh. All of them in the age group of 24 to 27.

A sub-zonal ‘commander’ of Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC) was arrested from Palamu District's Nawadih area when he, along with a companion, was trying to overtake Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) KN Tripathy's car on January 8, said Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP) N K Singh, reports The Times of India. Ajay's companion Dhaneshwar was also detained by Police. One AK-47 was recovered from Ajay's possession, he added. Singh claimed the recovered gun belongs to the Police department. The arrest of the sub zonal commander Ajay will prove to be a major setback to the TPC. According to the SP, Ajay was wanted in a dozen cases of theft and extortion. He had been to jail in the past. Police sources said it was Ajay who had threatened Congress MLA K N Tripathy with dire consequences two months back if he dares to venture into Nawadih under Chainpur block.

Security Forces on January 9 seized weapons from a hideout of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in the Nawra village under Nauhatta Police Station area in Bihar’s Rohtas District, a Police officer said, reports The Hindu. Acting on a tip off, Security Forces comprising Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Special Task Force (STF) and District Police launched a comb and search operation in the village and recovered the weapons hidden in a cave, district Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Burman said. The Maoists had kept the weapons there to carry out a major attack in the area, he said.

Three alleged Maoist couriers, including a village headman, were arrested from Raipur District while they were allegedly carrying ammunition for Maoists on January 15, reports Zee News. "Based on a specific input, the trio, who were travelling on a motorcycle with ammunition, were nabbed in Abhanpur in Raipur district of the state, when they were heading towards the Maoist-affected Kanker district of North Bastar this evening," Raipur Superintendent of Police OP Pal said. "Live cartridges, detonators and gelatin rods kept in a bag were seized from their possession which was allegedly meant for Maoists," he added. Those arrested were identified as Mohpal alias Santosh Dhruva (27), Baliram Usendi (29) and Chaitram Darro (22), all residents of Metabodli village under the Siksor police station area of Kanker. The seized consignment comprises 233 rounds of AK-47 rifle, 50 rounds of INSAS rifle, 10 rounds of 303 rifle, 20 gelatin sticks and 20 detonators, besides Rs 54,000 in cash as well as five mobile phones, he said. During interrogation, Baliram Usendi admitted that he is the village 'Sarpanch' (head of Panchayat, village level local body) of his native place, the SP said. A few months ago, the 'sarpanch' Metabodli village was allegedly murdered by Maoists during a so-called "people's court", after which Baliram was elected unopposed to this post, he said.

Security Force personnel on January 16 arrested two persons from a forest in Kotagarh Police Station area in Kandhamal District bordering Rayagada District following an encounter with the cadres of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), reports The Times of India. Maoist literature, empty self-loading rifle cartridges, torches, towels, kit bags and some medicines were seized from them. Police is yet to share details about the seized items as the combing operation parties had not returned from the forest, where the gun-battle between them and the extremists took place, said Superintendent of Police (SP) (Kandhamal) K V Singh. The arrested were identified as Manoj Kumar Sabat (31), and Dhaneswara Badaseth (38), Police said. "We are verifying their links with Maoists. Most probably they were involved in supplying essential stuff to the radicals," said a Police officer. Police said around a dozen Maoists were present during the encounter, which started around 9 am and lasted for nearly 20 minutes. "No casualty has been reported from either side. We have no information of any Maoist sustaining injuries during the fire exchange," Singh said.

The Chhattisgarh Police on February 15 arrested three more alleged Maoist conduits, identified as Dashrath Mandavi, Rajkumar Mandavi and Laxman Mandavi and seized cash and ammunition from them in Kanker District of the north Bastar region, reports The Hindu. 47 live cartridges, gelatins, detonators and INR 11,500 were recovered from their possession. The conduits were allegedly involved in the movement of cash, supplying essential commodities to Maoists inside core forest, besides accompanying senior cadres during their travel to several parts of the region. Dashrath had a key role in transferring cash while Rajkumar was the close aide of ‘divisional committee commander’ of Madh region, Prabhakar, who is reportedly handling the Maoist supply channel in Bastar region. With this arrest, a total of 17 Maoist couriers, including two prominent businessmen who were a part of the urban channel of the outlawed CPI-Maoist, have been nabbed in the State in the past two months.

The explosive materials include fuse wire and rods, used for processing landmines, and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), iron rods, etc, Superintendent of Police (SP) Manavjit Singh Dhillon said. The SP further said the District Police was tipped off about the entry of about 300 armed Maoists from Giridih and Jamui Districts into Nawada three days ago where they had put up posters warning the local people against casting their votes in the Lok Sabha. Based on intelligence reports that a group of Maoists were planning to target civilians and public property during Mahavishub Sankranti festivities in Narayanpatna block, personnel of Koraput District Police and District Voluntary Force started an operation on April 13. The Maoist group was tracked down in the Palaput-Gadraguda forest under the Narayanpatna Police Station limits, which resulted in an exchange of fire. “Purna was killed at the spot while his other naxalite compatriots managed to escape,” said Koraput Superintendent of Police Awinash Kumar. Two country-made guns, one pistol and Maoist material were also seized from the spot of encounter along with the body of the slain Maoist. Purna was a ‘military commander’ of the Srikakulam-Koraput division under Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of the CPI-Maoist organisation, said Police sources. He was active in Narayanpatna and Bandhugaon blocks of Koraput District and had several cases of violence were pending against him, including eight murder cases. The Bihar Police on April 27 arrested a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre allegedly planning to disrupt Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) elections in Muzaffarpur District in Bihar, reports The Hindu. Around INR 550,000 in cash, some explosive material and Maoist literature was seized from him. Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ranjit Kumar Mishra said the Maoist, Ram Kishore Sahni was arrested on a tip-off from Tengrari village. “Ram Kishore was nabbed from a house in the village. He is a close relative of Maoist 'zonal commander' Devendra Sahni alias Ratnakarji and was planning to disrupt the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Muzaffarpur,” said Mishra. The Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency is going to polls on May 7 along with six other constituencies Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Hajipur, Saran, Maharajganj and Ujiarpur. Based on intelligence inputs that around 20-25 Maoists of Dallirajhra ‘area committee’, Pallemadi and Mangaltarai ‘local operation squads’ (LOS) were camping in Bodra Hills, Police personnel were mobilised in the region. Sensing the presence of security personnel near restive hills, the Maoists opened indiscriminate firing on them following which Security Forces (SFs) retaliated. After the ensuing gunfight that lasted for around an hour, Maoists fled to the core forest taking advantage of the darkness. On receiving intelligence inputs about presence of Maoists in the hills of Baddongri near Ghotiyakanhar village a combined team of District Police, Special Task Force (STF) and Indo Tibetan Boarder Police (ITBP) personnel had started on an anti-Maoist operation from Aundhi Police Station on May 14. During the searching of area, Police had a face-off with the Maoists who opened indiscriminate fire on the Police party. Later on, during the searching of area, body of a Maoist was found who was identified as Pankaj ‘commander’ of Pendri Dalam (squad) of Maharashtra. An injured Maoist identified as one Pratap was also arrested from the spot, Police said. Troopers belonging to the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Armed Police arrested two People’s Liberation front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), cadres, identified as Munna Mahato alias Munna Gope and Budu Munda from Kotanger Jamtoli forest under Rania Police Station limits of Khunti District, reports The Business Standard on August 25.
