A huge cache of arms and other belongings of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were recovered by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Odisha Police personnel from a Maoist camp in a forested area near Sarkubandha in Malkangiri District of Odisha, on January 1, reports The Times of India. Commenting on the matter, District Superintendent of Police (SP), Akhileswar Singh, said "Around 10 to 12 rebels were present in the camp during our raid. However, spotting the security men, they fled and there was no exchange of fire." At least eight guns, four detonators, four metres of codex wire, a camera flash, one digital electronic multi-meter, cloth, medicines and Maoist literature were seized.

Security Forces (SFs) busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp and arrested two Maoists following a gun battle with them in the forest area of Palarmeta in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 1, reports The Times of India. The arrested Maoists were identified as Som Sai Usendi (33) and Lakhmu Netam (31). Some other Maoists managed to escape. A 12-bore gun, one air gun and other Maoism related material were recovered from the camping site. On interrogation, the arrested Maoists said the 'commander' of East Bastar Divisional Committee - Kamlesh - was also among the Maoists who fled the camp.

The recoveries included a 12 bore gun, bullets, electronic detonator, solar plates, mobile handsets, glucose bottles, torch, wire bundles, shoes, tents, backpacks, blankets, butter papers used for printing and Maoist literatures along with banners and few other things.

An Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) and two constables were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED), planted inside a bag by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, blew off near Dabnahi, about 130 Kms away from the state capital, in Gariaband District of Chhattisgarh, reports The Times of India. "Additional SP R K Minj and two constables were injured when they tried to open a zippered canvas bag found near a road, blocked by the Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists] by felling trees early in the morning", a Police spokesman said. Later para-military Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) forces rushed and carried out a search in the area to found another bag bomb. CRPF's bomb disposal squad diffused the bomb.

Police on January 9 arrested Nanu Ram alias Prabhatji, ‘secretary’ of Koyal Sankh zone of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), along with a pistol and five rounds of ammunition, from Kanke Police Station area in Ranchi District, reports Telegraph India. Active for the last 21 years, he is believed to have played a role during the encounter in Latehar District on January 7, 2013, that left 11 Security Force and two civilians dead. He carried head money of INR 700,000 and is accused of killing several Policemen and setting Government vehicles on fire earlier. Senior Superintendent of Police, Saket Kumar Singh, said Ram was also a member of the outfit’s Bihar Regional Committee. He is believed to be the one who works out strategies to attack the Police. So far Ram has admitted his involvement in as many as 12 cases. He had been arrested twice before, in 1992 and 2000.

Sources said a couple of grenades, pieces of blasted grenades and fired cases of bullets recovered from Latehar in Jharkhand have clear markings to show that they were manufactured in Pakistan. It is for the first time that ammunition with Pakistani markings have been recovered from Maoists. In the past, some Chinese ammunition have been recovered.

A Maoist camp was busted and a huge cache of explosives and other materials were seized by Security Forces (SFs) in a forest in Odisha's Ganjam District, reports The Business Standard on January 20. Commenting on the operation, SP, Ganjam, Ashish Singh said that the operation was carried out jointly by Special Operation Group (SOG), District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Police team in Sorada area during the last four days. The seized explosive items included two tiffin land mines bombs, three soap case bombs, nine detonators, 26 detonators with non-prime, two printer cartridge, three bundles of fuse wires, a bag containing white powder, around two Kilograms of iron plates used for preparation of clamour mines, 150 sticks of the cylindrical shape, ammunition pouch and around a dozen empty soap boxes. A team of Police and Border Security Force (BSF), which had been dispatched to the area following information about Maoist activities, came under fire near the village. The encounter with at least 12 Maoists against the elite C-60 Commandos lasted for half-an-hour. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Gadchiroli, Ravindra Kadam, said the encounter was an intelligence-based operation. He further said "Two more Naxals are likely to have suffered serious injuries, but their cadres took them away." West Bokaro Officer-in-Charge (OC) Balmeeki Singh said that following a tip-off about movement of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and storage of huge cache of explosives for triggering landmines, Police conducted raids in the farmhouse in the dense forest and recovered the explosives. "The explosives are believed to be stored by the Maoists. A bomb disposal squad had to be called in to defuse the explosive," Singh said, adding that Police also recovered 14 detonators, 11 gelatin sticks, 100 metres of wire, which would have been used to connect the explosives for a high intensity explosion. Ahead of the visit of Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh to Nuapada District of Odisha on February 16, Police on February 13 unearthed four landmines at Barkot, where he is expected to interact with tribals, reports The Times of India. The landmines, found close to Sunabeda sanctuary, are suspected to have been planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres. Two hours before the landmines were discovered, several posters put up by the Nuapada division of CPI-Maoist were found in the area, warning people against allowing the minister from entering Nuapada. "We had gone to seize the posters and wanted to know what was written on them. Then some of our men saw wires, which upon scrutiny were found to be connected to landmines. We are yet to recover them as it was difficult to do so in the absence of appropriate devices," said Nuapada Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ashis Singh. Yet more landmines are suspected to have been planted by Maoists in the area, he said.

Three People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed by a mob of 100 villagers near Darntoli-Sanwariya villages in Gumla District of Jharkhand, on February 15, reports The Times of India. Two country-made pistols, six bullets and three mobile handsets were recovered from them. Two of the deceased have been identified as Parmeshwar Oraon of Dohri village and Prakash Oraon of Dahu-Navatoli village under Sisai Police Station of the same District. Police Inspector Amish Hussein said, "On Thursday [February 14] they reached the village looking for Mana Baraik's daughter who had gone to work in a brick kiln. They threatened Baraik's daughter in-law and also abducted two school going boys of the village including Champa Oraon at gun point." The activities of PLFI men angered the villagers of Sanwariya who held a meeting on February 14 night and in the early morning on February 15 to discuss what to do with them. When the trio was attacked they even talked over the phone with Sukra Oraon, ‘sub-zonal’ commander of PLFI requesting him to rescue them. Commenting on the matter, Narayanpur Superintendent of Police (SP), Amit Kamble said "The gun battle between a group of Naxals and a joint contingent of the District Police and CRPF took place in the jungles of Mandora village when the team was out on a combing operation in the early hours of today [March 1]." According to him, the Maoists opened indiscriminate fire on seeing the team to which the SFs retaliated. While fleeing, the Maoists left behind the body of a ‘deputy commander’ who had died in the exchange of fire. Acting on a tip-off the Border Security Force (BSF) and Odisha Police personnel have recovered a huge cache of explosives including three China-made hand grenades during a counter insurgency operation in Pindamali forests under Narayanpatna Police Station of Koraput District, Odisha, on March 6, reports The Times of India. Commenting on the matter, Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar said "The explosives were dumped by Maoists in the deep forest so that those can be retrieved for future use. The security personnel safely recovered the explosives and no injury has been reported". Among the other articles recovered were 117 gelatin sticks, 30 kg of iron chips, one live landmine, 22 packets of liquid explosives and two packet of live wire. The recovery of Chinese-made explosives has taken the security men by surprise. "Never before had Chinese arms or explosives been recovered from Maoists hideouts. There is possibility that the grenades could have been smuggled from China through agents for the Maoist organization," said BSF intelligence sources. "The presence of more Chinese arms and explosives in the area cannot be ruled out," sources said.

The Police along with Jharkhand Jaguar, CoBRA, CRPF and Jharkhand Armed Police had launched an operation against the Maoists in Sivil-Roret and Luru regions in Chainpur police station of Gumla District on March 13 and 14 and fighting continued intermittently for 24 hours. Police had intelligence input about the presence of over 250-300 Maoists who included top leaders like central committee member Arvindji, politburo member Kishan Da, Inderjeet and regional commander Sylvester. During the encounter, the Security Forces came under heavy firing and landmine blasts. The Maoists triggered as many as 65 landmines blasts. Manjhi was wanted in several cases of Maoist violence, including killing of five Security Forces (SFs), of a bank van in 2010, attacking block building at Pirtand and attacking a Police team at Chilkari, the same year. The Special Task Force (STF) troopers busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) training camp in Abuzamad area of Narayanpur District and arrested six Maoists, including two women and a minor boy, on March 23, reports Zee News. Police seized three muzzle-loading guns, one tiffin bomb and other explosives after the joint team of STF and District Police engaged in a brief encounter with the Maoists holed up in the hideout, a senior officer said. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Amit Tukaram Kamble, said a joint team had been on the trail of the Maoists since March 22 on a tip-off and finally zeroed in on them near Nelnar village. The arrested Maoists have been identified as Manko Kavachi (20) and Baisi Padyami (19) besides Masur Juri (18), Shankar Yadav (40), Bhimesen Poyami (25) and a 16-year-old boy, the officer said. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres on April 11 blasted around seven wings of a building of the State Irrigation department in Aurangabad District, reports The Hindu. The incident took place around 2.30 a.m. near Bigha village in Deo block, on the Deo-Abma road. Around 50 to 100 hundred Maoists attacked the building and blasted it, the Police said. “The building has seven structures, which were being repaired by the Irrigation department. Two of them have been severely damaged, while the remaining five have been partially damaged,” Daljeet Singh, Superintendent of Police, Aurangabad, told The Hindu. The Police have also recovered a “live cane bomb, which we have defused. It kept to trap the police and the bomb disposal squad,” Mr. Singh said. Four Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, a Policeman and two villagers were killed in an encounter between the Maoists and Commandos of an anti-Naxal [Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)] unit, C-60, in a forest of Dhanora in Gadchiroli District on April 12, reports The Times of India. Sources said that C-60 Commandos launched a Search Operation in Sindesur forest in north Gadchiroli after receiving tip off that some LWEs had assembled near Sindesur village and were likely to address villagers in a meeting following lunch. Several LWEs were injured in the firing but bodies of three women and one male rebel were recovered. One SLR and a Bharmar rifle were also recovered. C-60 Commando Govind Farkade was the first to be killed. Police said Goswami, who is a state committee member of the CPI-Maoist, was arrested in 2006 and was released on bail. However, his lawyer claimed that Goswami was acquitted of all the charges in 2011. According to the Police, Goswami, who was the city committee secretary of the CPI-Maoist, was replaced by the young Maoist leader Abhishek Mukherjee after his arrest. Mukherjee too was arrested in September last year. A senior Police officer said "Goswami was close to Maoist leader Kishenji. Koraput Superintendent of Police (SP), Avinash Kumar said "We had reports that the Maoists had dumped explosives and other belongings at Urlikota forest and accordingly an operation was launched". A welding unit of Maoists used to manufacture Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) was unearthed by Security Forces (SFs) in Narayanpatna block of Koraput District on May 5, reports The Hindu. It was traced near Jakapani under the Narayanpatna Police Station limits during a joint operation by the Border Security Force (BSF) and Koraput District Police. Since past few months, SFs were searching for such units as there was much evidence that Maoists in Narayanpatna area were involved in manufacturing IEDs, including claymore mines, through use of welding and lathe machines. The items seized from the unit included gas-welding machine as well as gas cylinders used for welding. Investigation was initiated to identify the network through which the Maoists were getting their supply of gases and other goods needed for metal cutting and welding inside the dense jungle, Police source said. On March 13, equipment and goods used to manufacture claymore mines by Maoists were seized by security forces from Narikhilua jungle in Narayanpatna block.

Security Force (SF) personnel, who reported no damage or injuries, could not arrest any of those involved in the attack. It is suspected that at least a couple of Maoists had sustained injuries. Three rifles, some supplies and items of daily use were recovered from the spot. The incident occurred when a joint team of Police forces from the Districts of Rajnandgaon, Balod and Kanker was conducting a combing operation in the jungles of Durki hills in the Khadgaon Police Station area, Rajnandgaon SP Sanjeev Shukla told Press Trust of India. The truck, travelling from Jharkhand, had hit 12-year-old Pawan Paswan near Ghormo Ashram in Jamui around 3.30 pm. While Pawan escaped with injuries, the truck’s driver and helper fled after the vehicle rolled down into a ditch. Meanwhile, a secret Maoist camp was unearthed by SFs in the Kotgarh Police Station area of Kandhamal District. A large number of live ammunition and an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was seized from the camp located in the jungles of the Srirampur area. A joint operation by personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), District Voluntary Force (DVF), Special Police Officers (SPOs), and the local Police led to the finding of the camp. The seized ammunition included 43 live bullets of 9 mm firearms and 70 live ammunition of .315 firearms. This apart, one IED containing 10 kg of explosive material was also seized from the spot. According to Police sources, the ammunition and IED were of Bansadhara division of the CPI-Maoist.

Zilla Parishad (District level local self-government institution) member Bandopant Mallewar and Porla primary health centre (PHC) medical officer Dr Ravindra Karpe were also booked in the case after the arrested accused named them as the persons behind the dispatch of the cargo. The consignment included four detonators, one kilogram of gelatin sticks, 10 rounds of an AK-47 rifle, a medicine kit and tarpaulin. The arrested people —Jhunnulal Shende, Jeewanlal Bopte and drivers Sanjit Chandradas and Vivek Dhait — said the cargo belonged to Mallewar and they were carrying it for Maoists on the direction of Dr Karpe. Superintendent of Police (SP) Suvez Haque said notices had been served to the family members of Mallewar and Dr Karpe since they were not traceable. Haque said Shende is a manager who handles tendu-leaf contracts for Mallewar, while Bopte is an accountant working under Mallewar. Chandradas is a driver attached to the Porla PHC, while Dhait is private driver from Gadchiroli town. A court later remanded the four accused in Police custody till June 28.

According to Palamu Superintendent of Police (SP), Narendra Singh, Umesh is a ‘self-styled zonal committee member’ of the Koyal Sankh zone and ‘secretary’ of North Koyal sub-zone of the Maoists. "He is the third big Maoist leader to have been arrested in the recent past. He had INR 7 lakh [700,000] reward on his head", the SP added. He is a matriculate and a married man but his affair with a mother of two children finally led to his arrest. One country-made stengun, seven cartridges and one cellphone was recovered from Umesh. Three of them were residents of Tumkimetla village while the other was from Patagonda. They were members of Kalimela dalam (squad) of Malkangiri division of the CPI-Maoist. With this encounter, Maoists have lost 23 cadres so far this year while more than 31 have surrendered. Police feel Maoists may have faced a bigger loss but managed to drag bodies of some comrades into jungles. One 303 rifle, a carbine, five 12-bore rifles, 13 hand grenades and 20 'pittus' (rucksacks) were recovered. Sources said Maoists were preparing for a meeting at Sawari village in the vicinity when their plans were leaked to the Police force. Though the Police are yet to establish identity of slain Maoists, presence of senior cadres among them is not being ruled out.

The Police on July 15 unearthed an illegal mini-gun factory in the Bramani forest area, known to be a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) stronghold, in Bihar’s Munger District and recovered magazines, barrels and unassembled pistol kits, reports The Hindu. Acting on a tip-off, a Police team from Bhararar Police Station raided the forest and recovered 80 pistol magazines and 20 barrels among others from the spot. Two persons have been arrested while four others managed to flee, Station House Officer (SHO) Sanjeev Kumar said. The Police also seized drilling machines and other equipment used in making magazine from the spot, the Police said. Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) said the gun battle started between a joint Police party of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Police and Maoists in the forests under Bijapur Police Station limits. “The patrol party was on a combing operation from the past few days in Gorna, Mankeli and Pangud villages of Bijapur Police Station region,” a Police official at Bijapur said. On seeing the Police-team near Gorna, about 20-30 Maoist opened indiscriminate fire on the team following which they retaliated, leaving a Maoist dead. According to the Police, the blast occurred on National Highway (NH) 26 at a culvert between Sakirai and Kauguntha villages near Ralegada in Sunki ghat area under Pottangi Police Station limits around 9 a.m. The BSF personnel were on leave and on their way in three vehicles to Visakhapatnam from Balimela area of Malkangiri District to board trains. Each vehicle was carrying seven BSF personnel. A man, who escaped unhurt, said their vehicles were first fired at by Maoists hiding on a nearby hill. The BSF personnel fired back. However, their third vehicle was blasted while crossing the culvert. The vehicle was thrown off the road and was destroyed. Two of the injured were in a serious condition and they were being shifted to Visakhapatnam for treatment. Koraput Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar rushed to the spot with extra force, who were also fired at by the Maoists. Kumar narrowly escaped a bullet. Security Force (SF) personnel have cordoned off the hill and rounded up some suspicious persons from the area, who are being interrogated at Pottangi Police Station. SFs seized a grenade and wire used to detonate the landmine from the hill. Some food stuff were also found at the spot, hinting that it was an ambush.

The bombs were allegedly laid by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres to blow up SFs engaged in combing operations in the area. Police also destroyed the makeshift training camp of Maoists built in the forest cover. The Shankara village under Tebo Police Station area of the District, which was the centre of the gunbattle between the Forces and Maoists on September 3, in which a commando was killed, remained the operating area of the Forces on the second consecutive day.

A secret Maoist camp was unearthed by Security Forces in Sorada Police Station area of Ganjam District on September 11 with seizure of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from the spot, reports The Hindu. The camp was located inside the Rahaganda forest in Gajalbadi area bordering Kandhamal District. Personnel of the Sorada Police Station, District Voluntary Force (DVF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) took part in the operation. But no Maoist could be arrested as the secret den had been deserted by them. The IEDs seized from the spot included three tiffin bombs and five soap case bombs. Apart from the IEDs, 40 Maoist propaganda booklets in Odia, one Maoist uniform, one clock meant to be used as timer of IEDs, some medicines that had crossed the expiry date were seized. The personnel of bomb disposal squad destroyed the IEDs at the spot. Investigation was on to ascertain whether the camp was of the Odisha Maoist Party (OMP) of Sabyasachi Panda or of the CPI-Maoist.
