Two couriers of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist) were arrested by a joint squad of Charla Police and the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during a vehicle checking drive on the outskirts of the Charla Mandal (administrative sub division) headquarters town in Bhadradri Kothagudem District of Telangana on January 5, reports The Hindu. A bundle of 200-metre cordex wire, 10 pressure cookers, some substances used for making explosive materials, and a tractor-trolley were seized from them. The arrested persons were identified as P Sammaiah (35), and Satyaveni (33), both hailing from Charla. According to the Police, the duo had been working as couriers for the CPI-Maoist Dalam (armed squad) led by the Bhadradri-Kothagudem division ‘secretary’ Azad by providing essential commodities and explosive materials to the ultras operating in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh for the last two years.

An encounter between Police and cadres of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist), took place in Angada Forest area under Kunda Police Station limits in Chatra District of Jharkhand on January 6, reports prabhatkhabar.com. Seeing the Police dominating, the TSPC cadres were able to escape by taking advantage of the forest while firing. After the encounter, Police recovered a huge quantity of goods from the encounter site. The recoveries included, one walkie talkie, wire, army paternal cloth, two solar plates with two mobile chargers, cooking utensils, steel plates eight, rice 20 kilograms, fresh vegetables, blanket, civil cloth, pithu bag and other daily use items. Following inputs that ‘regional commander’ of the banned Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] organization TSPC, Akraman Ganjhu, carrying a prize of INR 1.5 million, and the ‘regional commander’, Shashikant alias Arif, carrying a prize of INR 1 million, are busy in the forest to carry out the incident, the operation was launched to arrest them. Seeing the Police coming towards them, the cadres started firing on the Police party, and the Police fired in retaliation. After this, the TSPC cadres escaped by taking advantage of the forest.

On January 9, Palamu Police arrested ‘area commander’ of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC/TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India (CPI-Maoist), Bansat Singh alias Bachchan ji alias Diwakar ji of the Shashikant alias Arif squad, along with his four associates, following information of Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) Police Headquarters Ranchi, from Duruh Pahari area of Sultani Ghati under Chhatarpur Police Station limits in Palamu District of Jharkhand, reports jagran.com. Superintendent of Police (SP), Chandan Sinha informed that first of all Bachchan and his three associates were arrested, and after this, on the statement of the ‘area commander’, a youth named Irfan was arrested from Kutumba of Aurangabad District of Bihar. As per the Police records, the ‘area commander’ Bachchan was absconding for the last three years. A country-made revolver with three live cartridges and a loaded country-made katta, a mobile and a pamphlet with two diaries have been recovered from the captured Naxalite commander and from his associate Aurangabad resident Sonu Kumar. Bachchan, who was arrested by Palamu Police, had earlier escaped from the custody of the Police during the Covid test after being caught in Dumaria Police Station of Bihar State in Case No. 0-29/2020. During the absconding, he was collecting ‘levy’ (extortion money) for the organization from businessmen, public representatives and contractors. Manatu resident Bachchan is accompanied by Pipra resident Deepak Kumar, Aurangabad's Tandwa resident Guddu Kumar Yadav, and Dev resident Sonu Kumar. Two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) concealed inside tiffin boxes, planted by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, were defused by the Security Forces (SFs) in Gorra village under Edka Police Station limits in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on January 9, reports The Print. “Acting on a tip-off regarding a Naxalite pamphlet, thrown on a gravel road leading to village Gorra, a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) Force, accompanied by police personnel reached the spot and carefully inspected the road,” Police said in a statement. During the inspection, security personnel found Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] pamphlets and traced two 25 kilograms IEDs, concealed inside tiffin boxes dumped at around 150 meters before Gorra village and defused them before they went off. The IEDs are believed to be planted by Maoists in the area, with the intent to injure security personnel. A case has been registered at Edka Police Station in Narayanpur against ‘unidentified’ Kiskodo Area Committee of CPI-Maoist under sections of the Explosive Substances Act.

A gunfight broke out between Security Forces (SFs) and Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] on the outskirts of Ranchi city on January 12, reports Business Standard. Acting on a tip-off that five members of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), were in a forest in the Budmu Police Station area, a search operation was started around 3.30 pm, and seeing the SFs, a gunfight broke out between the Naxals and the forces. "However, the extremists escaped taking advantage of the forest," Superintendent of Police (Ranchi-Rural) Naushad Alam said. A rifle and live bullets were seized from the area, he added.

A group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres opened fire at Police team when the special Police were carrying out their anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation in Vedampalli Forest in Aheri Tehsil (revenue unit) in Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra on January 15, reports UNI. About 25 outlaws started firing at the security personnel. After a heavy exchange of fire between the two sides, the Naxalites fled into the forest, a press release said, however, no casualties reported from either side. The Police later conducted search and recovered weapons and other Naxal material from the spot, the release said adding that Naxal plan to carry out sabotage during "Bhumkal Week" has been spoiled.

A large quantity of explosives suspected to have been kept hidden by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were seized by security personnel in Dumka District of Jharkhand on January 15, reports The Print. Superintendent of Police (SP), Ambar Lakra said acting on a tip-off a massive search operation was jointly conducted by Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and District Armed Police (DAP) on January 15 and the explosives hidden underneath the soil in Karkatta pahad was seized. The seized explosives included 200 gelatine pieces, 411 pieces of detonators, codex wire, 18 pieces of People’s Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA) badges, 31 pieces Mao badges, and 27 number ‘Naya Prabhat’ (naxal book), SP said. Police have registered a case under relevant sections of IPC, UPA Act, and Explosive Substances Act, the SP added.

A CRPF statement said, “The troops consisting of multiple teams conducted a search in the targeted area and discovered a cache of arms and ammunition hidden at multiple locations”. Narayana Reddy was involved in five major cases, including the torching of a private bus at Sarivela in Chintoor agency in 2022. Narayana Reddy was also involved in the killing of two tribal men — a Chintoor-based person in January 2023 and another person in 2021 — on the suspicion that they were ‘police informers’. “In November 2020, Narayana Reddy got in touch with the Maoists through a social networking platform and was encouraged to join the party by Maoist leader Koyyada Sumbaiah of Munuguru. Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar received information that some Maoists were on their way to deliver explosives to their ‘commander’. Based on the information, the SP said a team was constituted to initiate action and arrest them. Accordingly, the team launched a massive checking drive after cordoning off a road approaching Baripokhari village and arrested one Boj Hembram alias Kishun Hembram and seized a detonator and gelatine. On the lead provided by Boj during interrogation, Police arrested three other ultras with detonators and gelatine sticks from Tonto Police Station limits. The arrested Maoists confessed that they were active members of Maoist group and carrying the explosives for delivery on the instruction of their ‘commander’. The team also conducted raid in Rengrahatu village in West Singhbhum District on February 24, and arrested the ‘commander’ of Maoist militia group Damu Koda alias Judu Koda (35) and Birsing alias Chota Koda (35). The duo conceded that they were involved in setting vehicles a fire engaged in road construction work in Chiruiekir village on February 12. Besides, they were also a part of a group engaged in an encounter that occurred in Tumhaka Forest in January, Kochavad Forest near Rengrahatu village in December last year and Garuwang Forest near Rengrahatu in 2021.

As per the input, a large congregation of Naxalites was present near Todgatta to intimidate villagers, and they were planning a largescale ambush and attack on operating Police parties, the release said. Acting on the input, Gadchiroli Police's C60 anti-Naxal squad launched an operation in the Abujhmad Forest bordering Chhattisgarh. During the operation, they came under indiscriminate fire from a group of 60 to 70 Naxalites hiding in the Hiker Forest who used Barrel Grenade Launcher (BGL) and other weapons. The C-60 commandos retaliated and engaged Naxalites for approximately an hour. Eventually, the Naxalites managed to flee into the dense forest. A huge cache of weapons, including one .303 rifle, bharmar gun, country-made pistol, three magazines, 31 bullets, cash Rs 38,000, medicines, one branded tablet, Maoist literature and other materials were recovered from the hillock where the encounter happened for almost an hour.

Following information that members of Permili and Aheri Dalams of Naxalites [Left Wing Extremists] were camping in a forest area between Mane Rajaram and Permili armed outpost, the Police launched an operation. The seizure included 1,245 rounds of 7.62 MM and 271 rounds of 5.56 MM ammunition. The seized ammunition was received at Siksohara, Nalanda (Bihar) about two years ago. It had been carefully stashed away for eventual delivery to PLFI operatives and cadres for carrying acts of terror and violence. Bujji, a native of Cherpalli village under Bhupalapatnam Police Station in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh, came to the Taliperu Dam area along with other Maoists and ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) members with the intention of killing the Police. The associates of Bujji fled from the spot on noticing the Police. Acting on specific inputs about the presence of 10-15 armed Maoists of the Bhairamgarh Area Committee in the forests of Potenar-Kesamundi villages, personnel belonging to the District Reserve Guard (DRG), Bastar Fighters, and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)’s 222nd battalion launched the operation, a Police official said. When the patrolling team was cordoning off the area in the morning, an exchange of fire broke out between the two sides that lasted for about half an hour, the official added. Upon questioning, the passengers in the car were found to be Maoist couriers and were identified as Kunja Raghuvaran of Bhadrachalam, Pulipati Raviteja of Andhra Pradesh, Baireddy Sathish, and Ubbanapalli Dinesh Kumar of Chhattisgarh. SFs had received a tip-off about the presence of rebels belonging to the Kerlapal Area Committee under the Darbha Division of the Maoists, including leaders like Chaitu, Barse Deva, and Jagdish, in the hilly forests of Gogunda, Simel, and Gatta Pal villages, said Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) R K Barman. A District Reserve Guard (DRG) team spotted a Maoist camp on a hill near Simel, and when the SFs were trying to encircle it, a gunfight broke out, Barman said. However, the Maoists soon fled from the spot, he said, adding that ammunition, substantial quantities of food materials, and items of daily use, along with Maoist literature, were seized from the camps. Another Maoist training camp was also found on a hill between Gatta Pal and Paria villages, and the DRG team neutralised it. "The camp was spread over an area of two acres and could accommodate 80–100 Naxals. Sukma Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajat Nag said, "Police had received specific inputs about the presence of Maoists of the Jagargunda area committee in the forests of Tadmetla in the Chintagufa region of Sukma. Based on the information that they were hacking out a plan for a major attack, a joint team of battalion 203rd of the CRPF [Central Reserve Police Force] and DRG [District Reserve Guards] went out on an operation." When the SFs were crossing forests between Tadmetla and Minpa, a group of armed Maoists opened indiscriminate firing upon them, which was retaliated against, resulting in an encounter in which two Maoists were killed. SF personnel sanitised the area and recovered two bodies of male Maoists from the encounter site. The slain Maoists, who are identified as Sori Deva and Rama Deva, both residents of Tadmetla and ‘militia’ (people’s army of the Maoists) cadres of the Jagargunda area committee, carried INR 100,000 cash bounty each on their heads, and murder cases were registered against them. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel busted a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp in a forest near Kirmiti village under Temuripali Panchayat (village level local self-government institution) under Mathili Police Station limits in Malkangiri District of Odisha on November 8, reports ommcomnews.com. The BSF personnel recovered a 15-liter container, a walkie-talkie, homemade grenades, 82 Maoist literature books, tarpaulin, and bags, along with other items from the Maoist camp.

Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres identified as Deboy Purty alias Legasi Purty (28), Juriya Bahanda alias Mata Bahanda (28) and Lebia Boipai (21), have been arrested and materials used for making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) seized from their possession in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on November 10, reports The Week. Acting on a tip-off, the Police conducted a raid in Rengra village under Goilkera Police Station limits and made the seizures and arrests. The three Maoists were involved in several incidents, including triggering IEDs, blowing up a tractor carrying rations to a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp, and killing people, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashutosh Shekhar said.

Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Putta Vimaladitya, on November 14, said two cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) suffered injuries in an encounter with commandos of the Thunderbolts unit in the forest area at Uruppumkutty near Ayyankunnu in Iritty in Kannur District on November 13, reports onmanorama.com. The commandos recovered two guns from the encounter site. According to the Police, an eight-member Maoist gang opened fire at the commandos who were patrolling the forest, to which the commandos returned fire, and in the exchange of fire, two Maoists sustained injuries.
