One personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and one left-wing extremist, Naxalite of the Maoist Communist Centre (MCC) were killed and another CRPF personnel injured in an encounter in Vishrampur Saraiya village, under the Tandwa police station limits, Aurangabad district on April 10. The district police, which assisted the CRPF recovered a looted police rifle and several cartridges from the possession of slain MCC activist. The police believe that at least five MCC Naxalites were killed in the encounter. However, their bodies could not be recovered as the police were not able to search them deep inside the dense forest.

Five Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) terrorists were killed by the security forces (SFs) following an encounter at a hideout at Kambaching in Imphal east district, on April 11. Five sophisticated weapons - one M16, 1 US carbine, 1 AK rifle, 2 Chinese made pistols with several round of ammunition and incriminating documents were seized. Some terrorists are reported to have managed to escape under the cover of the indiscriminate firing. The encounter occurred when the terrorists hiding in the mentioned area fired indiscriminately at a joint group of Army and Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel, who were conducting a search operation upon specific information regarding the presence of the terrorists in the area. One live hand grenade, one AK-56 assault rifle, four magazines and 65 cartridges were seized from his possession. The letter pads of the BKI were also seized from the terrorist who had been declared a proclaimed offender. Police sources said the terrorist, Baldev Singh Dohak, crossed over to Pakistan a number of times and have links with the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI). As per police record, Dohak was arrested by the Haryana police in 1991 at Kalianwali Mandi in Sirsa district. Subsequently, he was arrested by Muktsar, Faridkot and Ferozepore police in a number of criminal cases. He remained in jail for four years and he was released on bail in 1995. After coming out of jail, he again started terrorist activities after jumping the bail.

While two of them were arrested from a house in Kursoo Rajbagh, the third that had managed to escape during the cordon and search operation, but was later arrested from a hospital in the city. They have been identified as Dr Tariq Mehmood Shaheen alias Zainul Abideen alias Dr Abdullah alias Fayaz Ahmed Khan, Moazam Sadiq and Hamid Noaman Bhat. Two fake identity cards, two pistols, two wireless sets and some incriminating documents, including those containing e-mail addresses and details of fund distribution, were recovered from their possession. A local conduit was also arrested with an amount of Rs 10 Lakh. SF personnel also arrested house-owners who had given shelter to the terrorists, the local who had acted as guide to these terrorists, and also the person who ran the hospital from where the third terrorist was picked up. Reports also said SFs were considering booking the three local residents under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA). Some more Al Badr terrorists are also present in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), according to sources, and their aim is to sabotage the forthcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the State by mixing up with the local residents with fake Electronic Photo Identity Cards (EPIC). The encounter was continuing when last reports came in, and SFs were looking for three more infiltrators, who had reportedly taken shelter in a forest area in Mankot. Official sources said SFs commenced search operations after spotting a group of terrorists attempting to breach the LoC and sneak into Indian territory from the Taiyan post in Lohara Gali, Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). These sources added that all five slain terrorists were foreign mercenaries of either the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) or the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). A large cache of weaponry, including five assault rifles, 17 magazines, two wireless sets and three boxes of ammunition have been recovered from the encounter-site, thus far.

The suspects––Zahir Hussain and Toufiq––reportedly belong to Royapettah and Korukkupet, respectively. Police seized detonators, gelatin sticks and other items for making bombs from them. Police suspect the two have links with those involved in the November 21-blast near Sai Baba temple, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, and were planning to plant bombs in different parts of Tamil Nadu. They were waiting for instructions and their arrest has averted a major disaster, a report claimed. In a related development, another person has been picked up by police in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu and is being interrogated to secure more information.
