The Kolkata Police Special Task Force (STF) recovered a looted carbine from a hideout of arrested Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leaders Sabyasachi Goswami and Sanjoy Mondal in Pailan, Joka, in the Kolkata capital of West Bengal on February 10, reports The Times of India. Police said the 9mm carbine appeared to have been issued by the government to Security Forces (SFs) for use in Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] zones. “This is crucial evidence that indicates those arrested were part of a group that attacked the security forces. Two magazines, 20 rounds of live 9mm ammunition, Rs 21,000 in cash, a laptop, SD cards, card readers, organizational literature, and magazines and letters written by purported CPI (Maoist) leaders have been seized,” said STF joint Commissioner of Police Solomon V. Nesakumar. CPI-Maoist ‘central committee (CC)’ member Sabyasachi Goswami alias Kishore Da, who featured on the most-wanted list of the NIA for his role in resurrecting Left Wing Extremism in the Assam-Bengal corridor, had been arrested from Purulia on January 11. Thereafter, ‘state committee member’ of the CPI-Maoist Mondal was arrested from Narendrapur on February 8. Security Forces (SFs) destroyed a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) camp after an exchange of fire with the Maoists on Gandhamardan Hill near Khandijharan village under Paikmal Police limits in Bargarh District of Odisha on February 23, reports The New Indian Express. Bargarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Prahalad Sahai Meena said, based on the intel about the presence of Maoists on Gandhamardan Hill, an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation was launched by a joint team of the Special Operations Group (SOG) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on February 21. "While the combing operation was underway, an exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the Maoists at around 8.30 a.m. on Friday [February 23]. Following the gun battle, our team searched the area and seized a number of Maoist articles.” Meena informed me that the entire Maoist camp was destroyed in the operation, but there were no casualties. During the search, the SFs recovered Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), eight bags, clothes, food, and other Maoist articles. “We seized some posters purportedly written by Maoists on a few occasions, including in the run-up to the Padampur bypoll in December 2022. However, there was no Maoist violence in Bargarh after the June 2021 encounter. Maoists often use Gandhamardan Hill, spanning over Bolangir and Bargarh districts, as a transit route between Odisha and Chhattisgarh,” the officer said. Sources said the ‘Bolangir-Bargarh and Mahasamund (BBM) division’ of the banned CPI-Maoist is operating along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border.

On January 27, Security Forces (SFs) busted a trans-Line of Control (LoC) militant module in Kupwara District of Jammu and Kashmir and arrested their five associates, who were involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition, reports Daily Excelsior. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kupwara, Yougal Manhas said that the module was busted following credible information about smuggling of arms and ammunition from two Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) handlers, originally hailing from Kupwara. The first one to be arrested in the case was Zahoor Ahmad Bhat of Rear Sudhpora Karnah, a village close to the LoC in Kupwara. “Acting on credible information from own sources and corroborated by other sister agencies and counterparts, Kupwara Police along with (Army’s) 9-PARA Field Regiment busted a terror module involved in smuggling of various arms and ammunition sent by two PoJK based LeT terrorist handlers Manzoor Ahmad Sheikh alias Shakoor of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Mohammad Khushal of Dhanni Karnah both at present operating from across the border, by arresting Zahoor Ahmad Bhat of Rear Sudhpora Karnah,” the SSP said. “An AK rifle, an AK magazine, 20 rounds of AK and two pistols with two magazines were recovered from him,” he added. He said preliminary investigations revealed that in the recent past the PoJK based handlers were in touch with Zahoor who hails from a village which is in proximity with LoC with various means. “The consignments dispatched to this side from across were thereafter delivered to other terror associates who were in contact with Zahoor and the said handlers as well,” Manhas said. He said that based on the further leads, four more militant associates Khursheed Ahmad Rather, Mudassir Shafiq and Ghulam Sarwar Rather, all residents of Gabra Karnah and Qazi Fazal Illahi were arrested. The SSP said arms and ammunition and other incriminating material were recovered from them which included five AK rifle (short); five AK magazines and 16 short AK rounds.
