Left-wing extremists—Naxalites—of the People’s War Group (PWG) killed a sarpanch (village headman), belonging to the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and a relative of Union Minister of State for Home Ch Vidyasagar Rao, in Madimalla village, Karimnagar district, on January 10. Police sources said approximately 10 Naxalites of the Maddimmalla and Bheemgal Local Guerrilla Squads of the PWG went to the house of Potlapally Radhakishan Rao and shot him dead. Separately, approximately 30-armed Naxalites of the PWG severely thrashed a Congress worker in Yenkapally village, Mahadevpur mandal, in the same district. The victim, M Srinivas Goud, has been shifted to a hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. In Meenajipet Manthani Muttaram mandal, PWG Naxalites reportedly hanged the effigy of the Chief Minister to a tree, protesting the Janmabhoomi (community development) programme.

Delayed reports said a group of National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) terrorists armed with sophisticated weapons, barged into the house of a civilian, Manna Kumar Tripura, in Jamircherra area, Dhalai district, Tripura, on January 12, and after beating up the family members abducted his 20-year-old daughter Premlata. She was subsequently physically assaulted and thereafter killed. Officials from the Manu police station recovered the half-burnt body on January 13. Also, a spent cartridge was recovered from the site of the crime.

All 15 policemen at picket surrendered and the Naxals decamped with 16 rifles and a carbine. Reportedly, the Naxals severely beat up the policemen and had also videographed the entire operation, besides pasting several posters on the picket's walls. Five injured police personnel have been admitted to the Patna Medical College Hospital. Reports said the PWG cadres were equipped with petrol bombs, hand grenades and sophisticated weapons. Talking to the media, Inspector General of Police A C Verma said, "Policemen continued to fight till their ammunitions were exhausted." State police chief R R Prasad added the Naxals took advantage of dense fog. He said, "The policemen in the picket offered resistance and fired… but nothing was visible."

The victim, Basha, was accosted at a shop in Akulavari Ganaparam village, Eturunagaram mandal (administrative unit) of Warangal district. He was taken to the village school and was beaten to death. The Naxalites also reportedly assaulted three persons of the same village. According to police sources, approximately 30 armed Naxalites, including eight women, reached the village and took away the victim into the forest area. He was beaten to death on the suspicion that he was acting as police informer. The Naxalites also made abortive attacks on Barlanga and Rai railway stations in Ranchi district. Official sources said most of the trains were running late due to these incidents. According to media reports, the Naxalites came to the village in the night and forced three civilians to accompany them after calling them out of their respective houses. After they reached the village outskirts, the Naxalites severely assaulted them alleging that they were assisting the police in an anti-Naxal drive in the area.
