A man and a woman accused of committing adultery were shot dead by the Taliban militants in the same District in the presence of their relatives, The Hindu reports. Later, unidentified persons sent a video to the Dawn newspaper on April 17 showing a Taliban firing squad killing the man and woman. In the video, the woman is heard appealing to the Taliban for mercy. "Have mercy on me, please have mercy. The charges against me are false and no man has ever touched me," she is heard saying. The Taliban militants first pumped several bullets into the woman’s chest and then fired a burst from assault rifles at her and the man. As the woman was apparently still alive after being shot, some Taliban are heard shouting: "She is alive, kill her." The newspaper quoted its sources as saying that the incident took place a few days ago.

The Chhattisgarh Government is reportedly moving heavy contingents of Security Forces into Kanker District to investigate the report that eight members of a family— including two children aged two and four— were assaulted to death and their dead bodies burnt following failed negotiations over a property dispute, according to The Hindu. “The place has a very high presence of Maoists as it is near Abuz Maad. Our forces are moving very cautiously anticipating Maoist attacks”, DGP Vishwa Ranjan said. According to information received at the Police headquarters, Ramayan Vishwakarma had a property dispute with some persons at Kesikodi. His rival sought the help of Maoists and approached Nagesh, a commander of the Local Organising Squad, to settle the dispute. The Maoist called for a meeting as part of the Jan Adalat (people’s court) and tried to settle the issue. “One of the parties was not ready for the settlement and the attack took place.” sources said quoting Ramayan Vishwakarma. The dead were identified as Vishwakarma’s mother, Sukhawathi; daughters Kausalya and Pramila; son Ram Singh; daughter-in-law Raju Bhanu; grand daughters Sarita and Aruna; and his wife whose name was not known. Vishwakarma accused his brother-in-law and some Maoist gram sabha (village committee) activists of having committed the crime, Police said, according to Hindustan Times. His brother-in-law, Shiv Uikey (48), a Maoist village committee activist, and his wife took the help of other Maoists to kill Vishwakarma’s family members, the complaint said. The Police also suspect the possibility of the Maoists killing the family on the suspicion that included Police informers.

Times of India reports that Security Forces exchanged fire with a group of 50-60 cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) near Bandih village at the foot of Ayodhya Hills near Kanthaljore forest in Purulia District in the early morning of September 11. The exchange of fire started at 1.30 am (IST) and lasted around 15 minutes, after which the Maoists fled towards Jharkhand. However, there were no casualties in the encounter. Few hours earlier, around 11.30 pm (IST) on September 10, the same Maoist group in military fatigue raided the house of a local leader of ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), Badan Paramanik, in Burudih village in the same District. Badan, whose name figures on the Maoist hitlist, has been staying away from home for some time. Failing to find him, the Maoists assaulted his son Goutam and wife Sabitri outside their home and warned that all of them would be killed if Badan did not quit the party immediately. They set ablaze to a haystack in the house before leaving. Further, the Maoists then went to the house of Chunnu Gorai, a well-heeled farmer, at the other end of the village and asked him to hand over his licensed gun. "As I refused to do so, they threatened to blow up my house using landmines. My wife then urged me to hand over the gun and I did so. The Maoists left, but only after hurling a few bombs outside our house in a bid to create panic among villagers," Gorai recalled.

Since then, the farmers, who together own about 10 acres of land, did not dare to visit their land for fear of Maoist attack, sources in the Husseinabad Police station said. However, they could not resist resuming ploughing following last week's rains in the face of severe drought in Jharkhand, the sources added.

According to Police sources, the victim had been identified as Gokul Tandi, who was posted in Indagaon forest range of Deobhog development block. Around 11.30pm (IST) on November 27, he received a phone call that a group was illegally cutting trees in the forests. Tandi, along with four forest guards, started for the spot. “As they entered the forests, about 12-15 armed Maoists intercepted them and took them into custody,” Deobhog Police Officer T.R. Nagwanshi said. They released the guards after threatening not to inform the Police and took the official into dense forest. Local villagers, Nagwanshi said, in the morning of November 28 discovered the body in the forest and informed the Police. Since the Police feared ambush, a team of forest employees and villagers were sent to the spot to bring the body. The body bore severe assault mark, as the insurgents brutally bashed the forest official with guns and lathis till he succumbed to his injuries. No bullet mark was found, he added.
