At least 30 of the 214 Sri Lankan soldiers who died fighting separatist rebels for Elephant pass died of dehydration after guerrillas cut off the area's only water source. The deaths came after Tamil Tigers overran Yakachchi, the main water source for the large military base at Elephant Pass, and blew up the electric pumps that supplied water to the camps. On April 25, air force jets and helicopter gunships hit rebel positions but no details of casualties were available. Two days after the military's devastating loss of Elephant Pass, the rebels and the government gave conflicting numbers of dead. Rebels said more than 1,000 soldiers were killed, while the army admitted on April 24, to 88 dead. But on April 25, officials raised their own toll to 214 after the rebels turned over 126 bodies to the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) claimed on May 16 they have launched the final assault on Jaffna town and asked civilians there to move to safer areas. LTTE rebels also claimed that they have made fresh advances 'deep into army-held territory', in the Chavakachcheri sector. The LTTE reportedly overran a base in Navatkuli and was attacking another base in Kaithady, besides damaging defences at Pasaiyur and Kurunagar, on Jaffna outskirts. The Special Media Information Centre said that government forces fought the LTTE, but shifted their positions to north-east of Tanankilappu, as troops came under concentrated artillery and mortar attack from the LTTE. In the clashes, six soldiers, including an officer were killed and 36 others were wounded, while the LTTE lost forty cadres. Besides, troops killed four more rebels in Nagarkovil, on May 15.
