United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants triggered serial bomb blasts in three different areas of Guwahati city, killing five persons, including a minor, and injuring 50 others on January 1, according to Assam Tribune. Of the five dead, two were identified as Amal Das (45) and Kohil Sheikh (7). The first explosion took place around 2:25 PM (IST) in Birubari followed by high-intensity explosions in the Bhootnath area (5:25PM) and Bhangagarh area (5:40PM). The blasts were triggered hours before the scheduled arrival of Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram. “From prima facie evidences collected from the spot, it appears to be the handiwork of suspected ULFA militants,” said Additional Superintendent of Police of Guwahati City, Debojit Deori. “The Birubari bomb, which was planted in a GMC dustbin near the Assam Association of Deaf office, was a low-intensity one. However, the subsequent blasts were aimed to cause maximum damage as they were planted in crowded areas,” added Deori. Another unnamed Police official claimed that the bomb in the Bhootnath area was planted in a bicycle. Director-General of Police (DGP) G.M. Srivastav told The Hindu: “We had information that some cadres of the ULFA’s 709 battalion have entered the city to trigger blasts and we were hot on their trail. Under pressure in the form of stepped-up security, they dumped one bomb at a garbage bin in Birubari locality.” The DGP said the ULFA wanted to demonstrate its presence ahead of Chidambaram’s visit.

A suspected United States missile strike on January 1 killed at least five Taliban militants in South Waziristan Agency, Daily Times reported. A local security official told AFP a US drone had fired three missiles in the Karikot area of Wana in the agency - the same spot where eight suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike 10 days ago. One of the missiles struck a vehicle, killing all five passengers, another security official said, adding those killed were known Taliban militants. The other two missiles hit a hilltop house that was a known Taliban hideout, but was empty at the time of the strike, the officials said. One militant was injured in the strike, they added. AP reported that at least three of those killed in the attack on the vehicle were from a Central Asian country.

Four militants were killed and three others injured when a CIA-operated spy plane fired two Hellfire missiles at a Government-run girls’ school in the Ladha sub-division of South Waziristan Agency (SWA) on January 2, the second attack in as many days. Tribal sources told The News that two pilotless spy planes were seen hovering over the Mehsud-inhabited areas before the air strikes on the school and a nearby-parked car. The drone reportedly fired two Hellfire missiles, one of them hitting the building of the Government Girls’ Primary School, Maidan Naray, and the other destroying the car owned by the militants. According to sources, four militants reportedly belonging to the Punjab, died and three others sustained injuries in the attack. They said dozens of militants later arrived and retrieved the bodies of their slain colleagues and injured from the rubble of the school building. Sources said the school building was owned by a local tribesman, Maqbool Mehsud Shamankhel, but was occupied by the militants who were using it as their base camp. Tribal sources said dozens of Government and private schools had been going without teachers and students in the Mehsud-inhabited areas and were now being used as training camps by the militants or for other purposes by the owners.

Five explosions were reported from two theatres in Lahore in the night of January 9, according to The News. However, no casualty was reported. Four low-intensity bombs exploded in the main electricity supply control room of the Al-Falah Theatre at around 8:20 pm (PST) while a high-intensity bomb exploded at the Tamasil theatre at around 10:30 pm in Mozang Chungi. A suspect was arrested from the premises of Al-Falah, who was taken to the Civil Lines police station for interrogation. Police said nobody or group had claimed responsibility for the blasts. Various news agencies, however, reported that at least six people had been injured in as many explosions, Daily Times reported. CNN quoted Police as saying that the blasts at Al-Falah Theatre had been caused by grenades hurled by a would-be suicide bomber who later tried to blow himself up, but was arrested. Declining to name a group, the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Investigations), Mushtaq Sukhera, said people opposed to cultural activities carried out the attacks – “which can be considered part of a series starting from juice shops in Garhi Shahu and later targeting Alhamra Cultural Complex.” “The group believes that these places are centres of anti-Islamic activities and spread obscenity,” he said.

More than 1000 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in the intense fighting in the Mullaittivu District since February 1, the pro—LTTE Website Tamil Net quoted LTTE sources as saying on February 6. Hundreds of SLA crack commandos were drawn into Mannakandal and Keappaapulavu 'boxes' and were cut off from their rear supplies during a pre-emptive strike by the LTTE, resulting in the death of these soldiers. An arms storage, which was full of weapons as the SLA was in full preparation to launch its 'final assault' on Puthukkudyiruppu was also seized by the LTTE commandos engaged in the pre-emptive strike, the report added. The sources further revealed that there were at least 20 mortars, thousands of shells, several hundreds of assault rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG), RPG launchers and a conservative estimate of one million rounds were among the arms and ammunitions seized. The LTTE had emptied the store of stockpiled arms and ammunitions by the time the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombed the location of its own arsenal, sources added further.

At least 32 persons were killed and 48 others wounded when a suspected suicide bomber blew himself amidst a crowd of Shia worshippers outside a mosque in Dera Ghazi Khan in the Punjab province on February 5, Daily Times reported. Police said the blast targeted dozens of people converging on the Al Hussainia Mosque after dark, shortly before a religious gathering. Although there was no immediate claim of responsibility, Police blamed sectarian extremists for the incident. “Ninety-nine percent it looks like a suicide attack… The explosion occurred just 50 feet short of the mosque. It is a terrorist attack aimed at Shias to create unrest,” Shaukat Javed, the Inspector General of Punjab Police, told AFP. “It seems like a suicide blast… If something is planted or hurled, it leaves a crater. There is no crater at the site of the incident,” Javed told a TV channel. “According to eyewitnesses, nothing was thrown from outside… It looks as if someone was standing at the site of the blast and waiting for the procession and he blew himself up as the procession came close to him,” District official Jawed Mehmood Bhatti told Reuters.
