A powerful bomb planted in a pick-up van exploded at a petrol station in Jamrud bazaar in Khyber Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), killing 35 persons, four of them Khasadar personnel, and injuring 78 others on January 10, reports Dawn. The bomb was triggered by remote control. Senior Administration Official Shakeel Khan Umarzai, put the death toll at 35 and the number of injured at 69 while 11 of them were in critical condition. Officials said the pick-up was removed by the Khasadar personnel from near a vegetable market and parked at the fuel station, adjacent to a taxi stand. About an hour later, the pick-up exploded. The blast destroyed several kiosks, six vehicles and the filling station. Khyber Agency Administrator Mutahir Zeb said it appeared that Zakhakhel tribe which had formed a lashkar (militia) against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in the area was the target. The incident could be a reaction to a military operation under way in Khyber Agency, particularly in Bara, added Mutahir Zeb. However, a TTP ‘spokesman’ who identified himself as Mohammad told by phone from an unspecified location that his organisation had not carried out the attack.

Rafiq alias Akhlaq, head of a militant group Jundul Khyber, was killed by the cadres of Ansarul Islam (AI) in Bagh locality of the Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency, reports The News. The sources said that Akhlaq had abducted an associate of the rival Tariq Afridi group, a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and imprisoned him at his Hujra (guest House) in Narkhaw area of Maidan being controlled by AI. The TTP asked the AI that one of its fighters had been detained by Akhlaq and sought their help to get the captive released. The sources added that members of the AI raided the Hujra of Akhlaq two days back and got the ‘prisoner’ released, which infuriated Akhlaq. The sources said that Akhlaq hurled a hand-grenade and opened fire on the AI men that led to an exchange of fire. In the ensuing firefight, Akhlaq was killed. Three of his associates were also captured by the AI cadres. Akhlaq was appointed as ‘chief’ of Jundul Khyber in May 2010 after ‘Commander’ Adnan Afridi parted ways with the TTP. Adnan had developed differences with the TTP leadership over the killing of his associates by Tariq Afridi. On October 29, 2010, the bullet-riddled body of Adnan was found in Rawalpindi.

The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) triggered a landmine blast to blow up an armoured vehicle, killing 13 Police personnel on board in a forest of Garhwa District bordering Chhattisgarh, on January 21, reports The Telegraph. Led by Officer-in Charge of Bhandaria Police Station Rajbali Chowdhary, troopers of VII battalion of Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) were accompanying local Block Development Officer (BDO) Vasudev Prasad and Garhwa zilla parishad (district level local self government institution) chairperson Shushma Mehta, who were on way to Bargarh village in separate cars to resolve a dispute over a health centre due to which villagers were observing a shutdown. Vasudev, whose vehicle was ahead of the armoured van carrying the Policemen, survived the attack. “Thirteen Policemen, including Officer-in Charge of Bhandaria Police Station, have died. The rebels took away 11 INSAS rifles, one SLR and two AK 47 rifles from the Security Forces,” said State Police spokesperson and Inspector General (Provision) RK Mallick, adds Daily Pioneer. Mehta and her bodyguard were kept hostage for some time, while they were passing by the spot. Later, Maoists released Mehta after snatching the pistol of her bodyguard. According to information as many as 50 – 60 armed Maoists were involved in the attack that lasted for nearly 30 minutes. Chief Minister Arjun Munda, who was in Gumla, said the Maoists attack was an act of cowardice. “They killed innocent Policemen by planning an ambush. So far reports of 13 deaths have been confirmed,” he said.
