A jirga (tribal council) representing Afghan Taliban ‘chief’ Mullah Muhammad Omar reached North Waziristan on May 1 to negotiate the safe release of former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) official Colonel Imam, as a tribal peace committee secured the body of another former ISI official Khalid Khawaja, who was found dead on April 30, a pro-Taliban Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and family members said, reports Daily Times. Kohat-based PML-N leader Javed Paracha revealed a jirga sent by Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar had “reached Miranshah” to “secure the release of Colonel Imam” without any preconditions. There was no independent confirmation of Paracha’s claims though. However, the pro-Mullah Omar Haqqani network is very influential in North Waziristan and if the pro-Haqqani local Taliban pressurise the “Asian Tigers”, they would have to release Colonel Imam – described as “very close” to Mullah Omar.

The Naga community groups demonstrated at Senapati District headquarters in protest against the State Government’s decision to prevent the NSCN-IM leader from visiting his native village in Ukhrul and the killing of two student protesters at Mao Gate. They declared to sever all ties with the State Government. The demonstrators including Naga leader and former Parliamentarian Mani Charenamei held ‘Naga National flags’. Charenamei, waving the flag, said, “This flag is our future.” He criticised the Manipur Government for what he termed as “depriving the basic human rights of the Nagas.” Commenting on the Autonomous District Council (ADC) polls, he said “it is a political poison as this Act deprives the rights of the hill people and if you cast your vote then politically you will become a dead man.” The apex body of the Naga frontal organisations in Manipur, the United Naga Council, accused the Imphal based media of being biased in their reporting and coverage of events and of being hand in gloves with the Manipur Government in the campaign against the Nagas.

They were cautioned if the earlier name of the District is not restored, it will again boil. The bandhs (general shut down) called by these organizations under the banner of Indigenous People’s Forum (IPF) over the issue of bifurcation of the District into two have already caused a sort of ethnic divide.

Police identified the killed as Ishfaq Ahmed Khanday (15), Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo (17) and Shujatul Islam (19). The victims were part of a mob hurling stones at CRPF personnel in Anchidoora in Anantnag town, Police said. Salahuddin has found himself increasingly isolated as the militant violence in the Valley waned to an all-time low since 1989. The HM, which was once Jammu and Kashmir’s largest indigenous group, has fragmented and July 6’s rally is seen as his desperate attempt to stage a comeback. Salahuddin assailed Islamabad for trying to please New Delhi and extending a warm welcome to Home Minister P Chidambaram last month. ‘‘Pakistan’s constant efforts to befriend India are like rubbing salt into the wounds of Kashmiris,’’ he said. Salahuddin claimed Kashmiris consider Pakistan as their lawful representative to raise the Kashmir issue at national and international level.
