Telegraph reports that traffic was disrupted on March 2 for over three hours on National Highway 31 as the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) staged a “people’s revolution” at Barama in Assam’s Baksa District to press for Bodoland State. 171 activists of CPI-Maoist-backed Chasi Mulia Adivasi Sangha (CMAS) lodged in Koraput jail have started hunger strike from April 4 demanding their release, reports The Hindu. These imprisoned CMAS activists have taken up this agitation under leadership of spokesperson of the outfit Tapan Mishra. They alleged that they were lodged in jail since past two years and they were victims of lingering judicial process. Moreover they also pointed out that their release was among the 14 points in the agreements reached between the State Government and the Maoists for the release of abducted Malkangiri District Collector R. Vineel Krishna and Junior Engineer Pavitra Majhi in the month of February. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Dharanidhar Das confirmed that these under-trial prisoners were continuing their hunger strike despite attempts of jail officials to motivate them to call off the hunger strike.

JeI leaders took the rally as a challenge, as Police earlier in the day barred supporters of Fazlul Huq Aminee, Chief of Islamic Oikya Jote (IOJ), from holding a rally at the same venue.

Only a day after a four-hour meeting between the heads of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States held to reset strained ties between the two agencies, missiles fired by US drones killed seven suspected militants and injured four others near Angoor Adda in South Waziristan Agency (SWA) of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 13, reports Dawn. An eyewitness said the militants had entered SWA from Afghanistan in two vehicles when four unmanned planes attacked them near the border village of Bagher. The drones fired missiles at the moving vehicles and a motorbike. In addition, Pakistan lodged a protest with the United States over the Angoor Adda drone attack, describing the continued drone raids as a ‘core irritant’ in counter-terrorism cooperation. “Pakistan strongly condemns the drone attack at Angoor Adda today. We have repeatedly said that such attacks are counter-productive and only contribute to strengthening the hands of terrorists,” Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir told US Ambassador Cameron Munter while lodging the protest with him. “Drone attacks have become a core irritant in the counter-terror campaign,” a statement by the Foreign Office said. However, the timing of the latest attack is also being seen as meaningful because it took place at a time when ISI Chief General Shuja Pasha was on his way home from Washington after talks with his counterpart, CIA Director Leon E. Panetta. General Pasha had called for limiting the scope of drone attacks to North Waziristan as a precondition for reviving the stalled counter-terrorism cooperation.

Hundreds of cadres of Hizbut Tehrir, a banned outfit, successfully held a rally outside Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi on April 17, reports The Express Tribune. The activists called for replacing the present Government system in the country with caliphate (an Islamic political system). They raised slogans like “Say no to democracy”, “We welcome Khilafah”, “Kufar nahi Islam chahiey” (We want Islam, not secularism). Police sources said that lack of coordination and the absence of senior Police officials at the scene were the main reasons why Police made no attempt to stop the rally. They did, however, arrest two of the more than hundred people participating in the rally. A statement issued by Hizbut Tehrir after the rally said, “Our members have braved the harshness of the traitor rulers for the sake of Allah and Rasul Allah. We pledge to continue our struggle against the American kuffar (infidels) and their agent rulers until Allah bestows us nasr (help).”

Assam Tribune reports that members of student bodies from seven North East States on April 25 carried out a protest action in Guwahati against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) that has been controversial since the time of imposition. For two hours, from four in the afternoon, the student leaders from all the NE states, under the banner of North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), took part in the sit-in protest demanding repeal of the Act, and later spoke out against the law which they condemned in unison. All those who spoke described the AFSPA as an affront to the people of the region, as the Act was in place in no other part of the country except the North East and Jammu and Kashmir. They expressed solidarity with the intrepid campaign being carried out by Irom Sharmila of Manipur against the AFSPA. Addressing the gathering, Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya, adviser to All Assam Students’ Union lambasted the Union Government for favoring a law that was unjust and unfair to the people of the North East. He found it utterly strange that the Union Government failed to take note of a democratic protest carried out by Sharmila against the Act, which is now more than a decade old. President of All Assam Students’ Union, Sankar Prasad Roy condemned the AFSPA as it gave enough scope for innocent people to be attacked and killed by armed personnel.

People of various tribal regions have refused to form anti-Taliban lashkars (peace bodies) and demanded release of the 175 members of a jirga (tribal council) allegedly imprisoned in Mohmand Agency about a month ago. Shafeeq alleged that the political administration of Mohmand Agency had invited a jirga of 175 elders of the region and asked them to form an anti-Taliban lashkar, but on refusal they were detained under the 40 Frontier Crime Regulation. He made it clear that in the prevailing situation the tribal people could not afford such steps. “The members and heads of various Qaumi lashkars (community militia) are being killed in different tribal and settled areas, but the Government has failed to arrest the killers,” he said and added that it was the government’s responsibility to protect lives of the people.

Mizoram’s Bru Coordination Committee (BCC) on June 28 sent a letter to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram asking the Centre to ensure rehabilitation for the 80 displaced Mizo families, allegedly driven out by Brus from Sakhan range in Tripura in 1998. In the letter Elvis Chorkhy, general secretary of the BCC, urged Chidambaram to give INR 80,000 to each displaced Mizo family, similar to the amount given to Bru families repatriated from the relief camps in North Tripura District and re-settled in Mizoram. Chorkhy mentioned that due to the demand by major civil societies in Mizoram that the Bru repatriation should not resume unless the displaced Mizos were rehabilitated, the ongoing repatriation process was derailed. “It is the desire of the BCC to ensure mutual satisfaction between the Mizo and Bru communities of Mizoram in the matter,” he said, adding, “the BCC wants peace, tranquility and communal harmony in the state, without which the present process of Bru repatriation cannot be successful”. The fourth phase of Bru repatriation, scheduled to commence from June 7, was stalled by the State Government in the wake of major NGOs and political parties demanding rehabilitation of the displaced Mizo families before resumption of the Bru repatriation.

Bangladesh Parliament on June 30, retained Islam's status as the ‘State Religion’ and the Arabic phrase "Bismillahir Rahmanir Rahim" with its translation "In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful/ In the name of the Creator, the Merciful" was made a part of the Constitution with the passage of the 15th Constitutional amendment bill, reports Daily Star. The latest amendment also allowed religion based politics which had been banned on papers in 2010 after the cancellation of the Fifth Amendment. The 15th Amendment bill also brought a significant change to the charter, according to which, the legality of trials of War Crime suspects, who were not part of any armed force or auxiliary force in 1971, cannot be challenged in any court. However, 12 political parties, headed by Abdur Rab Yusufi of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, called a 30-hour-long countrywide hartal (general shut-down) protesting “removal of the phrase Absolute Faith and Trust in Allah from the Constitution”, reinstatement of Secularism and Socialism as Fundamental Principles of the charter and formulation of the Women Development Policy. Times of India reports that Qurat-ul-Ain has become the centre of a new controversy in Kashmir. Separatist leaders are threatening an agitation if she isn't released. The Police say they have a watertight case against her; she is a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) courier. "We have been watching her for a while and picked her up only after we learnt that she was part of the team that targeted the police station," said a senior security source. "Militants use young girls like Qurat-ul-Ain to reconnoiter targets, to act as couriers, because they don't draw too much attention. But the same is also true of us here: some of our best sources here are women," said an unnamed senior Police officer. Another top officer said, "Let's be honest: we have lost control of the main street here. It's the militants who control the mohallas of old city." "The basic problem is that the militant presence is strong. Surgical strikes won't help. What's needed is large-scale crackdown like we did in the early 1990s. Push in a large number of troops, surround a locality and go house-to-house. But the political leadership won't hear of it. Meanwhile, the militants are exerting their grip recruiting more people and eliminating our sources," said another security source.

Telegraph reports that the Communist party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) and other Maoist-backed organisations held rallies in Jhargram and Kolkata where some of the activists burnt her effigies on July 26. They accused Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister, of betrayal over her Government’s failure to release the PCPA leaders and withdraw joint forces from Jungle Mahal. In Kolkata, the Maoist sympathisers clashed with Police who tried to prevent them from erecting a “column” for the martyrs of the Singur-Nandigram and Jungle Mahal movements at College Square. They demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners. 12 members of United Student Democratic Front (USDF), a Maoist sympathiser group, were arrested in the protests that saw the chief minister’s effigy being burnt and a stretch of College Street blocked briefly. In Jhargram, Belpahari and other areas of West Midnapore, rallies were held for the “martyrs” by the Forum Against Terror, Corruption and Imperialism, an umbrella organisation of the PCPA, Jhargram Students Federation, Nari Ijjat Bachao Committee (committee for protection of women dignity) and others. The list of the “martyrs” included top PCPA leaders Lalmohan Tudu, Sidhu Soren and Umakanta Mahato, killed in encounters with the joint forces. The Statesman reports that angry villagers set two motorbikes of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-backed Peoples’ Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) cadres on fire and vandalised a Tata Sumo before pushing it into a pond when the PCPA cadres went to Dhanguri village under Sankrail Police Station in West Midnapore District to bring in villagers to a rally at Ramkrishna Vidyalaya ground in Lalgarh and beat people who refused to attend the rally. The Democratic Forum against Terror, Corruption and Imperialistic Aggression organised the rally at the venue to protest against the Government’s policies. Chhatradhar Mahato, the jailed leader of PCPA, had contested the Assembly poll under the banner of this forum. “Two villagers were injured during the clash, but the PCPA activists fled the scene after facing strong resistance," said Alok Rajoria, Additional Superintendent of Police. The PCPA cadres but also faced resistance at other villages in Binpur, Belpahari, Gopiballavpur, Salboni and Nayagram where many villagers declined to attend the rally, a senior Police officer said. Several frontal outfits of Maoists and sympathisers attended the rally, but the gathering was not up to the expectation of the organisers, a Police officer said. “They expected a gathering of 50,000 people, but it was hardly 10 to 15,000," a senior Police officer posted at the venue said.

In the Difaa-e-Pakistan Conference (‘Defence of Pakistan’ conference) led by Jama’at-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Jama’at-e-Ulema-Islam (JuI), about 50,000 Islamists, including chief Hafiz Saeed, staged a protest at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on December 18 to condemn the United States (US) and India, while showing support for Pakistan’s military, reported Indian Express. The speakers also included Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, known as the father of the Afghan Taliban. Saeed vowed to avenge the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 and to continue the holy war in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He claimed it was the duty of Pakistanis to take revenge for the killing of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, the destruction of the Babri Masjid in 1992 and the killing of Pakistani nationals in the bombing of the Samjhauta Express train in 2007. Saeed warned the US to avoid creating troubles for Pakistan. Otherwise, he said, the JuD and workers of other like-minded parties knew what action to take, added Dawn. “Today I send out a message to Americans. We will give you due respect as guests in line with our religion. But if you come here to deprive Pakistan of its nuclear assets, to martyr our soldiers in Mohmand Agency-like incidents, kill innocent people as Raymond Davis had done and use our country’s airbases for spying, we will defend our country with full force,” he said.
