According to Telegraph reports detained United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) ‘general secretary’ Anup Chetia is likely to be handed over to India by Bangladesh before talks with ULFA commences in January, 2011. Inspector-General of Border Security Force (BSF) (Assam and Meghalaya frontier), R.C. Saxena, said that efforts are still on to get Chetia handed over to India before commencement of the tripartite talks, adding that a team from the Ministry of home affairs had gone to Dhaka to discuss the modalities of the hand-over with the Bangladesh Government. “There are chances of getting him before the commencement of the talks in January,” he said.

The Self-styled chairman of United National Liberation Front (UNLF) Rajkumar Meghen alias Sana Yaina was produced before the Special National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court, Guwahati on December 3, where he was remanded to 13 days’ custody, reports Assam Tribune. The NIA had sought custody of 20 days on the strength of NIA case number 10/10 under section 120(B)/121/121(A) -122-468 Indian Penal Code and under Sec 10/13 of Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act. The next hearing is fixed on December 16. He also revealed that he was detained in Bangladesh on September 29, 2010, rubbishing the NIA’s claim that he had been arrested near Motihari in Bihar on November 30.

The Political Adviser of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Bhimkanta Buragohain alias Mama, was released from Guwahati Central Jail on December 5 after spending nearly seven years behind bars. Following the release Mama said, “The peace talks are moving in the right direction. Paresh Barua is the military chief of the organisation and, hence, he is very relevant in any matter relating to the outfit, including peace talks.” Buragohain, who was in jail since his arrest during a crackdown on the ULFA in Bhutan by the Royal Bhutan Army in 2003, is the fifth senior leader of the outfit to be released on bail. Four other senior ULFA leaders who have been released on bail are Vice-chairman Pradip Gogoi, cultural secretary Pranati Deka, central publicity secretary Mithinga Daimary and deputy ‘commander-in-chief’ Raju Baruah. Now three other top leaders — the outfit's chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, foreign secretary Sasha Choudhury and finance secretary Chitraban Hazarika — are awaiting release.

According to Police sources, a group of four NDFB militants exchanged fire with Police at Batasipur, under Dhekiajuli Police Station on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. The Court of the Special Judge, Assam, granted permission to the Directorate of Enforcement to question Gorlosa and two BW militant – Samir Ahmed and Partha Warisa. The Court, however, did not give permission to the Directorate of Enforcement to quiz BW’s “commander-in-chief” Niranjan Hojai on health grounds.

ULFA’s central publicity cell manager Arunudoy Dohotia, in an email statement issued, said, “ULFA commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah’s eldest son Arindam, who was kidnapped from the road, has already been released. The kidnappers had held him hostage with his face covered with a black cloth, physically tortured and threatened him with death. Arindam was forced to call his father from the phones of the kidnappers. He was severely assaulted after he failed to talk to his father. The kidnappers grilled Arindam over the whereabouts, sources of money and the so-called businesses of his father. The kidnappers also warned Arindam not to reveal the kidnapping incident.” Further, the ULFA also claimed that, it had clues to the abductors of Paresh Baruah’s son and said investigations were on to gather more information.

The Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) Court, Guwahati on December 30 granted bail to the chairman of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) Arabinda Rajkhowa, in connection with all the six TADA cases registered against him, reports Assam Tribune. The ULFA chief was allowed to go against a bail amount of INR 1 lakh with two sureties of the like amount. The TADA Court granted the bail on condition that the accused shall not leave the country till the case is disposed of and must also deposit his passport, if any, to the TADA Court.
