Police were put Peshawar on high alert following a Special Branch report regarding a potential suicide attack in the city, reports Daily Times. The tip-off came two days after the Peshawar Police recovered improvised explosives attached to a motorcycle near the border with Khyber Agency of FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas). According to the report, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had grouped with other terror organisations in the area and was planning attacks on Peshawar. “We have reports that a vehicle-borne suicide attack is highly likely in Peshawar,” a senior official quoted a Special Branch report to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Government.

Eighteen militants and seven soldiers were killed and three others injured during a clash that broke out when a group of 40 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants attacked on Security Forces (SFs) checkpost in Shidano Dand area of Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on February 3, reports Daily Times. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan in a telephone call from an unidentified place claimed responsibility for the raid, saying 12 Frontier Corps soldiers were killed and four others captured by terrorists. “We carried out this attack to avenge the killing of our commander Taj Gul in Khyber Agency,” Ehsan said, without giving details when he was killed and his significance to the outfit. “We have killed 12 FC soldiers and captured four others alive,” he said, adding that terrorists also seized a large cache of weapons. Independent confirmation of death tolls is very difficult in the tribal area, a Taliban and al Qaeda stronghold barred to journalists and aid workers.

Security Forces (SFs) recovered a cache of arms and ammunition during a raid on a Government school in Landikotal of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on February 9, reports Daily Times. Officials said that SFs raided a Government high school and the adjacent living quarters of teachers after they were informed by an arrested militant about presence of arms there. Different types of weapons, mortar shells, suicide jackets, mines and various types of explosives were recovered from some of the school rooms and teachers’ quarters. Later SFs neutralised at least three unexploded bombs at a safer place. SFs had arrested eight suspected militants, including the vice principal of the school, on February 2 from the same vicinity. Militants affiliated with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in their telephonic conversation with some local journalists also expressed desperation over the arrest of their colleagues. They warned SFs and local political administration of dire consequence.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti on February 11 said that the Provincial Government was ready to talk with Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) for the sake of regional peace and future of young generation, but it will only be possible if TTP laid down arms and accepted Government writ, reports Daily Times. He offered clemency for the blood of innocent people if the TTP abandoned their anti-state acts and pledged to accept writ of the land. The chief minister said, “We are ready to pardon the blood of our friends, party workers and even attacks on our female family members if the Taliban become patriotic Pakistanis.” The CM, though, offered pardon to Taliban for laying down arms, and also made it clear that if the TTP did not surrender, the government would not sit quiet until the last Taliban fighter was brought to justice.

At least 26 Shias were reportedly killed while 36 others injured on February 17, after a suicide bomber detonated his explosives just near the targeted mosque in the Kurmi bazaar of Parachinar, the main town of Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Daily Times. The miseries of the locals did not end there, as Security Forces (SFs) fired on crowds protesting the attack, killing three people. A curfew was imposed in the area and law enforcers launched a search operation. However, no arrests were made till the filing of this report. Fazal Saeed Haqqani-led Tehreek-e-Taliban Islami (TTI) – a breakaway faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) – has claimed responsibility for the attack. “We have targeted the Shia community of Parachinar because they were involved in activities against us,” Fazal Saeed said over telephone from an undisclosed location. “We caught a man yesterday who was planting a bomb at a petrol station owned by a Sunni. We did it in response,” he told AFP.
