US drone attack killed 15 militants in Hisokhel, east of Miranshah, the headquarter of North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 4, reports Daily Times. Officials said two missiles slammed into a compound in the village of Hisokhel before dawn. “Fifteen terrorists were killed in a dawn strike on a compound. The bodies of those killed were unable to be identified,” a security official in Miranshah said. He said there were unconfirmed reports that foreigners were among the dead. In the debris, local people found letterheads of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), wooden beds, blankets and mattresses. Dawn reported that al Qaeda’s ‘second-in-command’ Abu Yahya al-Libi was the target of the US drone strike. US officials confirmed to The New York Times that Libi had been the target of the missile attack in North Waziristan, but could not say whether he had survived. A senior Pakistani security source in Peshawar, meanwhile, told The New York Times that it “looks like he has been killed.”

At least 20 Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants were killed in retaliatory fire by Security Forces (SFs) when a group of militants attacked the Salala checkpost along the Af-Pak international border in Mohammad Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 5, reports Dawn. The Salala checkpost, which was attacked by NATO forces on November 26, 2011, severely straining Pakistan-US relations. According to security officials, the attack was repulsed and 20 militants were killed and several others injured. According to them, one soldier was killed and three others injured in the exchange of fire. However, the TTP rejected SFs’ claim about casualties of militants and said only one militant had been killed and three injured. The Government provided police guards to different leaders of anti-Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Adezai Qaumi Lashkar (community militia) except its chief and assured them of full legal support, reports Dawn. Addressing a joint press conference along with the leaders of different peace bodies at Malik Saad Police Lines in Peshawar on June 5, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shafiullah Khan urged the volunteers to continue activities against militants in their respective localities. During the press conference, Adezai Qaumi Lashkar was represented by Waqif Khan, Qari Sajid and Fazl Malik while Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar was represented by its head Fahimur Rehman. However, head of Adezai Qaumi Lashkar Dilawar Khan was not present on the occasion. He even expressed ignorance about the press conference when contacted by Dawn. The SP appreciated the role of peace bodies against militants in the rural areas of Peshawar and hoped that Police and volunteers would continue to coordinate with each other for elimination of terrorism. He said that peace bodies had been formed when Dr Suleman was Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) to check movement of anti-state and anti-social elements. Mr Khan said that at least 10 peace bodies had been formed in the past. All of them would be revived to keep close liaison with Police for maintenance of peace and pinpointing criminals and terrorists in their areas, he added. He said that 260 personnel of community police would continue to work in rural areas and get salaries.

Hundreds of families were forced to flee when Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) launched a fresh offensive against Kukikhel tribe in Tirah valley of Khyber Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on June 8, reported Dawn. Sources said that about 500 families, belonging to Maniya Khel and Sra Vela localities of Tirah, reached Ghundi village of Jamrud tehsil (revenue unit) while around 300 more temporarily settled down in Ali Masjid area. A resident of Maniya Khel, Saifullah told the media “Taliban came in a large number. They were heavily armed”. He added that Kukikhel volunteers could not offer any resistance as they had exhausted all their ammunition and also vacated most of their bunkers. Saifullah further said that Taliban were also supported by Ansarul Islam (AI), a local militant outfit headed by Maulana Mehboobul Haq. He also alleged that the local militant outfit was affiliated with Jama’at Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F). Further, another Kukikhel volunteer Noor Zahir said that his tribe, which had earlier vowed to expel Taliban from their soil at any cost, lost most of their areas to Taliban fighters of Tariq Afridi group. He said that Taliban started consolidating their position in the areas, which the Kukikehl volunteers vacated after the offensive was launched. “Taliban occupied our houses and seized most of our belongings including household items, cattle and stocks of edibles, which we use to keep for winter,” he said.

Dawn reported that the TTP took full control of Kukikhel-dominated areas of Tirah Valley in Khyber Agency as more families left their homes and moved to Jamrud town of the Agency. Sources said that besides fortifying their positions in the newly-occupied localities, TTP had also torched houses of some Kukikhel elders in Bagh and Sra Vela. They said that the TTP made announcements on loudspeakers from local mosques and asked residents to hoist white flags atop their houses and volunteer one person from each family to join the outfit. One resident of Jamrud, Muhammad Irfan, told the media that except for Puk Darra and Daman-e-Koh, all areas, including Sra Vela, Bagh, Pathai, Ghakhai, Baarhi Saporhi and Maniyakhel, had fallen to TTP and residents had moved to Ali Masjid and Ghundi in Jamrud. He however, denied that any offer had been made by the political administration to any of the displaced families and said they had not received any assistance from local authorities. “The entire Tirah Valley, except Bazaar Zakakhel, is now under effective control of three militant groups, TTP (Tariq Afridi group), Mangal Bagh-led Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) and Ansarul Islam (AI),” confirmed Bakhtiar Mohmand, Assistant Political Agent of Jamrud.

the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Mehsud faction, in a pamphlet distributed in South Waziristan Agency, gave a final warning to residents to evacuate the area, reported The Express Tribune. According to the pamphlet distributed by the militants in the Mehsud territory of South Waziristan, it appealed to all residents of the Agency to vacate the Agency owing to the war in FATA. A general amnesty was also extended to all persons leaving the area. It added that no Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) or any NGO contractors were allowed to operate in the area. Rather it termed them as legitimate targets. Included in this list were employees associated with educational activities, health, and members of the Khasadar force (Tribal Police force). The handout said that these people, if caught working will be treated as criminals. The militant group also warned that house owners, and others who had helped members of the Mehsud tribe live in or settle in Waziristan, had committed a crime. The notice also carried a warning for those operating transportation enterprises. The handout said these people were committing an “unpardonable crime”.

At least two Policemen, identified as Abdul Jabbar (40) and Naheedullah (38), were killed and five others, including three civilians were injured in a suicide attack targeting the convoy of Faheem-ur-Rehman, the head of the anti-Taliban Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar (Peace Committee) at Bazidkhel Chowk in Badhaber area of Peshawar on June 12, reports Daily Times. Both the Policemen killed in the attack belonged to Bazidkhel village and were members of the Special Force. According to bomb disposal unit, legs of the bomber had been found and he appeared to be a teenager. Fahim said that as a routine, he travelled in his own car, but this time he had luckily changed the vehicle and escaped the attack. “Yes, there are threats to my life, but I am not worried because it was not the first attack on my life,” he said. He accused Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) of carrying out the attack because he had been opposing them for a long time and would not succumb to their pressure. “We are determined to fight the Taliban and Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) because they are against Pakistan and killing innocent people,” Fahim added.

According to sources, the militants, who had taken shelter in Kunar Province after the military operation in the Malakand division, attacked the Bin Darra check post in Brawal area with rockets and heavy weapons. revered social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi has been given round-the-clock protection, for the first time in Karachi, against an alleged Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) threat, officials said on June 15, according to Daily Times. “There is a threat to him by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which wants to kidnap him and use him to get their detained militants released in exchange,” an unnamed security official said. Aslam Khan, a senior Police official, said, “A letter containing a hit-list has been intercepted, which includes Edhi and two police officials, including me,” he said. But Edhi’s son and deputy, Faisal, told AFP that the TTP had visited his father’s office on June 6 to assure him that he was not a target. “They told my father that they respect him and admire whatever he does, and won’t target him ever,” Faisal said.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in North Waziristan has declared a ban on the polio vaccination programme in the tribal agency as long as drone attacks continue in the region, The Hindu reported on June 17. This ban was announced on June 16 through a press release which claimed polio affected only few in comparison to drones which killed large numbers indiscriminately. According to local media, the statement said: “After consultation with the Taliban Shura, servant of Mujahideen in North Waziristan Agency Hafiz Gul Bahadur has decided that there will be a ban on polio campaign as long as drone strikes are not stopped.” The statement also argued the polio campaign was just a front for the U.S. to spy inside Pakistan and made a reference to Shakeel Afridi, the doctor who helped the CIA confirm the presence of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad by getting his family's DNA samples through a health programme.

The Federal Government on June 20 asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Syed Masood Kausar to try to enter into dialogue with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in North Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to pave the way for vaccination of children, reports Dawn. A letter sent to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Syed Masood Kausar by Shahnaz Wazir Ali, focal person for polio at the Prime Minister’s Polio Eradication Cell Secretariat requested the Governor to start talks with the TTP through the political agent of North Waziristan. A militant outfit headed by Hafiz Gul Bahadar had announced ban on polio vaccination on June 16, 2012, in reaction to the drone attacks. The letter titled “Ban on polio campaign in North Waziristan” expressed serious concern over reports regarding TTP’s ban on polio campaign in North Waziristan and asked the Governor to hold dialogue with militant leader Hafiz Gul Bahadar to save children from becoming handicapped. “All the available means must be utilised to ensure that the polio campaigns in the area are not disrupted for the sake of the future of 161,000 children there,” a one-page letter said. It said that the Government was extremely concerned about eradicating polio from the country in general and FATA in particular.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants on motorcycles opened fire at the offices of local news channel Aaj TV in Karachi on June 25, injuring two persons, including a security guard, reports Dawn. The TTP claimed responsibility for the shooting, and threatened attacks against other television channels that did not feature the Taliban point of view. “We had informed the management of Aaj TV to include our view on issues, but the channel had become a mouthpiece of the government,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, spokesman for the TTP said. “Geo TV is going to be our next target if they do not change their behaviour towards us. They have been using very bad language against the Mujahideen.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister (PM) Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has ordered for provision of security to all TV channels.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) admitted for the first time that they are using the Afghan soil as a springboard for launching attacks on Pakistani Security Forces (SFs), reports The Express Tribune. The acknowledgment gives credence to Islamabad’s claims that the TTP has found safe havens in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces bordering Pakistan. Pakistani officials believe that the top TTP cadres – including Maulana Fazlullah, Maulvi Faqir and Waliur Rehman – and hundreds of their loyalists had fled a string of military offensives in Swat, and Bajaur and Mohmand agencies since 2008 to seek shelter in Afghanistan. “Maulana Fazlullah is leading TTP attacks from Afghanistan’s border provinces and is in touch with fighters in Malakand division,” Sirajuddin, the spokesperson for TTP’s Malakand chapter, told The Express Tribune over phone from an undisclosed location. “We regularly move across the porous border,” he added. He claimed that Fazlullah was commanding over a thousand diehard fighters.

The bullet-riddled body of chief of the anti-Taliban Bazidkhel Qaumi Lashkar (community militia), Fahim-ur-Rehman, who escaped at least seven attempts on his life since 2008, was found in his white Land Cruiser on the Ring Road of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on June 27, reports Dawn. The bodies of his three close friends and associates, Altaf Bacha, Haji Niaz Muhammad and Rahim Lala, were also found in the vehicle. Superintendent of Police Asif Iqbal said that personnel of the bomb disposal squad found the bodies after they had been informed about them at around 6.30am. He said the slain men might have been killed elsewhere and their bodies moved to the Ring Road. The chief of the Bazidkhel lashkar and his three associates sustained multiple bullet injuries to their heads and chests, he said. On June 12, two of his Police guards were killed in a suicide attack on his vehicle near his residence, but he survived simply because he was sitting in another car at the time. Meanwhile, both the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) have claimed responsibility for the murder of Mr Rehman and his three associates. “We killed Fahim and his comrades. They raised a militia against us and wanted to defeat us,” Ehsanullah Ehsan, the spokesman for the TTP, told journalists by phone. On their part, the LI said they would soon release a video of the four slain men.

The beheading, claimed by the TTP, took place on June 24 when TTP militants from Afghanistan infiltrated into the Upper Dir District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A senior security official in Peshawar confirmed that a total of 17 soldiers were targeted by the attackers who came from the eastern Afghan province of Kunar. “Six troops were killed on the first day, then another seven were slaughtered the next day,” the official said. “Four were missing and now they have also been beheaded,” he said.

Alarmed by increasing frequency of cross-border attacks from Afghanistan-based Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, Pakistan’s military is believed to have decided to send reinforcements to Swat after TTP Swat chapter chief Maulvi Fazlullah and his loyalists threatened to recapture the valley they ruled for two years before they were routed by the military in 2009. “Threats from across the border are not something we can ignore … we will have to reinforce our troops to keep them away from Swat,” a senior security official said. Troops may be moved to Swat from Punjab’s Kharian and Jhelum cantonments, the official said. According to him, the reinforcements would be deployed to secure hills and roads leading to Swat from Afghanistan’s bordering Kunar and Nuristan provinces.
