Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Sindh Police claimed to have arrested two Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in two separate raids, reports Daily Times. CID’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fayyaz Khan said that on a tip-off, CID officials conducted raids at Federal Capital Area and Mauripur, arresting two alleged TTP militants Sadiq Mehsud and Shah Alam Mehsud and recovered three pistols, a hand grenade and a cab from their possession. Khan informed media that during preliminary questioning, the militants confessed involvement in various cases of crimes, including target killing, extortion and robberies in the city.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) offer security for Imran Khan's South Waziristan rally, reports The Express Tribune. In a meeting of the TTP, the outfit set aside its earlier plans to send suicide bombers to assassinate PTI chief Imran Khan, during his visit to South Waziristan for a “peace march”. The Express Tribune quoting the UK-based daily The Telegraph said that senior ‘commanders’ of TTP as saying that the group noted Khan’s vehement opposition to US drone strikes against militants in its territory “as it reversed course to offer security assistance.” A TTP spokesperson said, “We are ready to provide them security if they need. We endorse Imran Khan’s plea that drone strikes are against our sovereignty. The anti-drone rallies should have been taken out by the religious leaders long ago but Imran had taken the lead and we would not harm him or his followers.” Earlier, the TTP had criticised Khan’s statement in which he had called himself a “liberal”. The TTP contended that by classifying himself as a liberal, Imran Khan had proved that he was a slave of the Western powers — especially the US and Europe. The organisation held that they were not satisfied with his policies.

The Government allocated PKR 455 million to rebuild the facilities, he said, adding it would finish the job by December.

The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) on October 3 informed the Punjab Government that some families who left the militancy-hit Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and took up residence in Rawalpindi District of Punjab have received extortion threats, allegedly from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), reports Dawn. Officials in the know of the communication say the threats are delivered to better off over telephone or through ‘chits’, demanding large sums of money, or ‘valuable articles’ meaning jewellery, or ‘assistance’ to their operatives – at the pain of kidnapping or other harm. According to the officials, the money raised by the militants through criminality goes to finance their terror apparatus as Governments at home and abroad have put strict checks on the flow of funds to banned outfits through charity and other sources. In its communication to the Punjab Government, the CTD identified at least eight such wealthy families residing in Naseerabad, Chah Sultan and Chowki Hameeda localities of the garrison city that had paid extortion money.

a man identifying himself as Abu Siyaf, ‘spokesperson’ for the Nabi Hanfi-led militant group, claimed that their men opened fire on the bomber as he entered the building and his suicide vest went off. On the contrary, talking to reporters from an undisclosed location by phone, the TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan responsibility for the attack stressed that the bomber first killed 15 men of the Nabi Hanfi group in the building before blowing himself up. He said the TTP would continue its efforts to eliminate all the members of the Nabi Hanfi group.

Mujahideen Jaishul Khilafa (MJK), an offshoot of the TTP distributed a pamphlet in Tank District near Waziristan which warned participants of the PTI “peace march” to stay away and that they themselves would be responsible for any loss of “life or money” caused during the rally, reports The Express Tribune. PTI’s Media coordinator Tahir Jamil said that the party did not receive any threat directly from any militant outfit active in the tribal region. However, he said that he would be able to clarify party’s stance on MJK’s threat by evening. The pamphlet with the subject “Imperative warning and announcement” termed PTI chief Imran Khan as an agent of Israel, United States and Britain, who wanted to strengthen the hold of “Jewish and Christian forces” in the tribal area of Pakistan.

Six militants and one soldier were killed in exchange of fire when militants from Afghanistan side attacked a border security post in Gursal area in Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on October 5, reports Dawn. Sources said that a group of militants attacked Mohmand Rifles border post in Gursal area with heavy and light weapons from across the Afghan border near the posts manned by Afghan troops. Security Forces (SFs) retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for over an hour. As a result, Naib Subedar Umar Daraz Khattak was killed while Naik Sher Aslam Khattak and sepoy Sabiullah received injuries. Official sources claimed that six militants were killed in the exchange of fire. SFs took into custody body of an unknown militant along with three Kalashnikovs and one anti-tank gun from the site of the incident. However, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) central ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan phoned media persons from unknown location and claimed that 17 security personnel were killed and as many injured in the attack.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) declined on October 5 to provide security to a Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) peace march to Kotkai town of South Waziristan Agency and declared that PTI Chairman Imran Khan was a westernised and secular man, reports Dawn. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said in a statement that the TTP was an ideological organisation based on fundamentals of Islam and performed all activities in accordance with the teachings of Islam. “Imran Khan is a liberal and secular person and so is his party. Therefore, we deny all baseless statements that we have offered to provide security for his so-called peace rally,” the spokesman said. He said the lives of ‘Mujahideen’ were too valuable to protect a westernised and secular man. The TTP spokesman said Pakistani politicians were of two types—those who are in power like the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP), were openly hostile to Islam and Mujahideen and the other category was of those who were not yet in power, like the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) and PTI, but they also were secular and slaves of the West. “Although we consider Imran Khan a secular and liberal person as he himself proudly claims. So being an ideological Islamic organisation the TTP does not need any sympathy from him (Imran),” said the spokesman.

The Capital Police on the night of October 8 started collecting information about all employees working in key Government installations in the high-security Red Zone, including the Parliament Lodges; sources in the Police Department told the media, reports Dawn. The sources said an intelligence report shared with the Interior Ministry had warned that militants were planning to target the Government installations and hotels located in the zone. After the intelligence report, the Ministry issued a threat alert to the Capital Police and other Departments concerned on October 6, 2012 according to the sources. The alert reached the Police on October 7, 2012 added sources. The sources said the intelligence report had warned that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TPP) could target the Diplomatic Enclave, Government installations, official residences and the hotels. There were also reports that the militants had penetrated into the city to carry out terror activities and they may also get help from their ‘accomplices’ in the Red Zone. In response to the threat alert, the city circle police launched the survey during which all government installations and its official residences would be combed, the sources added. A senior police officer on the condition of anonymity told Dawn that they had started combing the area and were conducting the survey to collect details about those working in different offices or residing in the Government colonies. “Each and every person living in the colonies or official quarters, including Parliament Lodges, Gulshan-e-Jinnah and the provincial and Kashmir houses, will be checked and their details verified,” he said. Also, a meeting chaired by Faisal Karim Kundi, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly decided that no armed guards of Member of National Assembly’s (MNAs) or Senators would be allowed into the Parliament building.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) shot award winning children’s rights activist Malala Yousufzai in the head on her school bus in Mingora, the headquterer of Swat District, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on October 9 to avenge her campaigns for the right to education in the militants’ former stronghold of Swat, reports Daily Times. Police said two other girls were also injured in the attack on Malala’s school bus. Malala was airlifted to Peshawar where she was admitted to intensive neuro-care ward of a military hospital, said a military official. Doctors at the Saidu Sharif Medical Complex in Mingora, where she received initial treatment, said the bullet penetrated her skull but missed her brain, and she was out of danger. Malala won international recognition for highlighting TTP atrocities in Swat with a blog for the BBC three years ago. Her struggle resonated with tens of thousands of girls who were being denied education by militants across northwest Pakistan, where the Government has been fighting Swat TTP since 2007. She received the first-ever national peace award from the Pakistani Government last year, and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize by advocacy group Kids Rights Foundation in 2011.

TTP claimed responsibility of an attack on Malala Yousufzai, reports The News. TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan said his group was behind the shooting. "We carried out this attack," spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP, speaking by telephone from an undisclosed location. "Anybody who speaks against us will be attacked in the same way." "She was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and she was calling President Obama her idol," Ehsan said by telephone from an undisclosed location. "She was young but she was promoting Western culture in Pashtun areas," he added. Further, TTP said that they will target her again if she survives because she was a “secular-minded lady”, reports The Express Tribune. This was a warning for all youngsters who were involved in similar activites and added that they will be targeted if they do not stop.

The banned militant organisation TTP had issued a statement on October 10, using Islamic Shariah to defend the attack. TTP had said that although they do not believe in attacking women, “whom so ever leads a campaign against Islam and Shariah is ordered to be killed by Shariah.” TTP ‘spokesman’ Ehsanullah Ehsan had argued that it is “not just allowed … but obligatory in Islam” to kill such a person involved “in leading a campaign against Shariah and (who) tries to involve whole community in such campaign, and that personality becomes a symbol of anti-Shariah campaign.”

At least 50 Islamic scholars belonging to ‘Sunni Ittehad Council’ on October 11 declared Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP)’s attack on Pakistani children’s rights activist Malala Yousufzai as un-Islamic, reports Dawn. The scholars issued a combined ‘fatwa’ (Islamic ruling) in Lahore which said that the TTP’s interpretation of Islam was incorrect and was deviant from the actual interpretation of the Shariah. Sunni Ittehad Council represents ‘Barelvi sect’ of Islam which is influenced by Sufism and defends the traditional Sufi practices from the criticisms of Islamic movements like the ‘Deobandi’, ‘Wahhabi’ and ‘Ahl al-Hadith’. The fatwa added that TTP were misguided and their mindset was driven by ignorance. “Islam does not stop women from acquiring education and by attacking Malala the Taliban have crossed the limits of Islam,” the fatwa added.

The Supreme Court on October 13 restrained media outlets from covering terrorism related incidents in such a manner which would glorify the terrorists, reports The Express Tribune. In its order on the Balochistan security case, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry justified the decision, writing that material supplied by Senator SM Zafar suggested that whenever there was an incident involving murder of innocent people, civilians or otherwise, newspapers blamed different ‘organisations’. This, the chief justice noted, increased a sense of insecurity among the people of Balochistan. Recent statements by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) following their attack on Malala Yousufzai, received widespread coverage in electronic and print media.

Angered by the coverage of its attempt to assassinate Malala Yousufzai, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has drawn up plans to target Pakistani and international media organisations across the country, reports Daily Times. TTP ‘chief’ Hakimullah Mehsud has issued “special directions” to his subordinates in different cities of Pakistan to target media groups. An Interior Ministry official, on condition of anonymity, said intelligence agencies had intercepted a phone conversation between Mehsud and a subordinate named Nadeem Abbas alias Intiqami, in which the TTP chief was heard directing Abbas to attack media organisations. Mehsud directed Abbas to target offices of media groups in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad and other cities. Media groups and personalities who were denouncing the Taliban after the attack on Malala should be the focus of such attacks. The Interior Ministry has issued orders to beef up security near the offices of media organisations in the country following Mehsud’s call, the official said.

women activists belonging to Sunni Tehreek, a religious outfit, dressed in traditional burqas gathered outside national press club to protest in favour of Malala and condemn the TTP. The women protestors demanded from the Government to disarm terrorists, who have become a threat for the daughters of the nation. They also demanded that government of Pakistan should launch an operation in Waziristan without involving a foreign country. However, the leaders of the Defence of Pakistan Council (DPC), an alliance of mainly religious organisations, addressed a large gathering Muzaffarabad on October 14 and expressed complete support for the ongoing armed struggle in Indian occupied Kashmir and criticised Pakistani rulers for supporting the United States, reports Dawn. DPC Chairman Maulana Samiul Haq also spoke about the attack on Malala Yousufzai and its repercussions for the country. The gathering was held in the University College ground which had been decorated with dozens of small and large banners of different outfits inscribed with jihadi slogans and portraits of their leaders. “Malala is (like) our daughter and we condemn the attack on her… But the innocent Swat girl has been used as a tool to pave the way for an operation in South and North Waziristan,” Maulana Haq said. “It is a part of a great game by devilish forces and under its cover they want to bomb us again and defame Islam and Islamic forces.”

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on October 16 defended the attack on Malala Yusufzai, rejecting that she was an innocent girl and labelling her as a spy of the United States (US), reports The News. The central ‘spokesman’ of TTP, Ehsanullah Ehsan, in a detailed statement issued to the media said Malala's date of birth is July 1997 which makes her 15 years four months old today. "Even if no sign of maturity becomes noticeable, this age of the girl marks the end of pre-maturity phase." The statement said, "In Islam and Pakhtun traditions there is absolutely no room for an attack on a woman of pure virtues. But in cases where a woman is seen as a clear sinner who stands in defiance of Sharia’h (Islamic Law), such a woman is not only allowed to be attacked but there is an obligatory instruction for such an action." "She has received the punishment for her sin," he said. Stating another reason, the ‘spokesman’ said, "The other reason for the attack on Malala was her activism aimed at sparking a feud within the Islamic society of Pakhtuns." He clarified that she was not attacked for her pursuit of education. "Had it been for education, then there are scores of girls who go out to school (they would have been attacked too)." "Taliban executed the attack on an adult girl only after she emerged as a pivotal character in the media war against us," the ‘spokesman’ argued.

The United States (US) Treasury said on October 17 that it had frozen the assets of three Pakistan-based individuals suspected of backing the Taliban and other terrorist organisations in Pakistan and Afghanistan, including one man linked to a failed attack in New York, reports Daily Times. Treasury said it froze all US assets and prohibited any US individuals from doing business with Maulvi Adam Khan Achekzai, Aamir Ali Chaudhry and Qari Ayyub Bashir. Adam and Chaudhry were involved in the production of bombs for the Taliban and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the treasury said in a statement. Bashir coordinated financial support for the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it said. “As these designations demonstrate, we will continue to work to dismantle the terrorist support networks operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan, paying special attention to those involved in the manufacture of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs),” said David Cohen, US Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence. Chaudhry was an electronics and explosives expert with the TTP, Adam was a key figure for the Taliban, responsible for the production of IEDs and suicide vests, and Bashir, whom the US Treasury named as head of finance for the IMU, was suspected of marshalling funds from sources in Turkey and Europe to finance IMU attacks in Afghanistan and Pakistan

Quoting two senior officials The Express Tribune on October 19 (today) reported that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) Attaullah, the alleged attacker of Malala Yusufzai was captured during a 2009 military offensive against the militant group but was released after three months. Attaullah is on the run and may have fled to Afghanistan, they said. The two officials said Attaullah was detained by Security Forces (SFs) after a 2009 military campaign pushed the TTP out of the Swat Valley. “He spent three months in the custody of SFs but was freed after no evidence (of wrongdoing) was found,” one official said. The second source, a senior security official, said authorities had gathered enough evidence to arrest Attaullah after raiding his house in Swat. “His mother and two brothers were taken into custody to force him to surrender,” said the second senior official. “Also two other close relatives of Attaullah have been taken into custody because we heard he spent the night in their house after his escape from Swat.”

Pakistan is reported to have sought extradition of Maulvi Fazlullah who led the brief Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) occupation of Swat and fled to Afghanistan after a military operation in the valley, reports Dawn. Television channels quoted diplomatic sources as saying on October 21-night that Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar made the demand during a meeting with US Special Envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan Marc Grossman. Mrs Khar urged the US envoy to put pressure on Afghanistan to hand over Fazlullah to Pakistan. She said that the TTP Swat ‘chief’ was hiding in an Afghan area close to Pakistani borders and his aides had launched several attacks on military posts in Dir, Chitral and other areas of Pakistan. Fazlullah, also known as Mullah Radio, was involved in cross-border attacks on Pakistan and was suspected of having organised the attack on young student activist Malala Yousufzai in Swat, the TV channels quoted the foreign minister to have informed Mr Grossman.

another schoolgirl from Swat, Hina Khan, who was a pioneer in raising voice against Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) atrocities in the Malakand Valley, is now claiming to be on the TTPs hit list. What is more worrying for her and her family is that despite repeated requests for security no steps has been taken to protect them after they fled from Swat and moved to Islamabad. Hina Khan, a student of class 11, had publicly denounced militants’ atrocities in 2009. “I had left Swat with my family because the militants had threatened girls’ education there but now I feel I would not be able to go to school in Islamabad after these renewed threats,” she told Dawn. Hina held a press conference at the National Press Club in 2008 after her friends in Swat had told her that the militants were becoming more intolerant towards girls seeking education and started bombing schools. “I raised my voice publicly for the sake of their future,” she said.
