On January 14, a United Liberation Force of Asom (ULFA) terrorist was killed in an encounter with security force personnel in Patkijuli village, under Khairani police post-limits, Assam. Quoting Army sources, media reports added that, on getting specific information that three or four ULFA terrorists were moving along the India–Bhutan border to collect ration, medicine and winter clothing for colleagues in camps in Bhutan, the Army laid an ambush. In the ensuing encounter, an ULFA cadre was killed, while the others managed to escape. An AK 56 rifle, a magazine and 28 live rounds of ammunitions were recovered from the site of the encounter.

Security forces (SFs), on January 15, arrested three illegal arms dealers, also suspected conduits of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) in Assam's Karbi Anglong district. According to official sources, on a tip off, an SF-patrol party intercepted the auto rickshaw they were travelling in, in Lahorijan village, and arrested them. The search party also recovered two disassembled 12 bore single barrel guns and 10 live rounds of ammunition from the vehicle.

On December 20, at least two unidentified ULFA terrorists were reportedly killed during an encounter with Army personnel at Guabari, under Tamulpur police station jurisdiction in the Nalbari district on the Indo-Bhutan border.
